I dont think the actors need to know or play the game, but the directors and people producing should know everything about it. So long as the director knows what needs to be coveyed, the actors should be pointed in the right direction.
@RealMikeHollow4 ай бұрын
I have to disagree. Its rarely a good idea to do that. It paid off for The Last of Us but most times it's better for people to take Henry Cavill or the One Piece casts approach and learn the nitty gritty parts of the show.
@SuperJJParker4 ай бұрын
@@RealMikeHollow I think the Henry Cavill point shows why the other way round is more important. Here, we have a true fan of the game, but he was powerless because he was just an actor and didn't have any power in the direction the show took. On the other hand, if the director is a true fan, they won't allow actors to be to be poor representations of the characters, and they have the power to steer the show in the right direction. Actors are supposed to be the directors' tools to paint their picture. Actors just need to be able to take direction and understand what the director wants. Obviously, in an ideal world, both would be knowledgeable about the material, but the most important one is the directors and producers.

Actors knowing how their character act would help their performance
@notori-ice4 ай бұрын
This is for sure a "why can't we have both" thing, if everyone involved actually knows what's going on then every part of the show is likely gonna be better. The actors knowing the source material for sure helps bring out performances they may have had a harder time getting if they didn't really witness or understand the emotions the character went through
@SuperJJParker4 ай бұрын
@@notori-ice Yeah, that would be great, but we don't live in a world where everything comes together perfectly like that. Actors in general should be good enough that all they need is a good director directing them and a script which shows actors why their characters feel what they feel and do what they do. A great director and script will overcome any shortcomings the actors might have, but great actors can't polish a turd of a script with a poor director.

If not playing the game atleast make it mandatory to watch playthroughs of the previous Yakuza titles online. Im so tired of live action adaptations not respecting the source material by taking creative liberties on one hand while on the other hand they expect the "source" fanbase to come out & support it after pissing them off. They will do everything they can to milk the OG fanbase but do nothing to appease them, rather trick them into watching something they made for themselves cos they sure as hell ain't making it for the fans.

This title is misleading. What actually happened was the director told the actors to not play the game while the actors wanted to play the games to research and study their role. So the actors wanted to play the games but were discouraged to not do so. I'm actually mad at the directors and the producers were being douchebags. Also it isn't Hollywood. Japan has a habit of doing this with their own IPs. You should see the number of poorly adapted love action version of the animes. So if anything Japan has a bad habit like America does. So your source isn't wrong but doesn't realize Japan has fucked up their own shit. You can't simply blame Hollywood. Besides that I agree with you. The games are detail centric. There are a lot of details. Also nice seeing your face. Not playing them is really annoying. I'm worried but not everyone is worried. I understand people being worried.

Masaharu Take is known for a few yakuza dramas, which he prepared for by interviewing actual yakuza members in the past. It is very likely he wanted the show to feel as authentic to real world yakuzas as they possibly could so he didn't want the actors to have a fanticized idea & isn't that sorta normal for adaptations? if the goal isn't to do a 1:1 recreation i see no reason the cast needs to know the story so in-depth & this also isn't the only instance where the actors haven't seen or played the source material (last of us & fallout come to mind)
@jwoodsjr123sgameroom54 ай бұрын
Maybe, but it still doesn't paint a good light. Yakuza is one of the games you HAVE to go by 1:1, or at least close to it. Not saying you have to go too crazy (Like, they don't have to use the heat system or anything from the game 😂) but storywise, they have to go by what the original story is about, especially lore wise. Certain elements just can't be changed just for the heck of being changed, or else The Show will be dead on arrival, it's just how it is

Hopefully none of the actors act anything like the video game characters. Film and video games are different mediums.

They're different mediums but you need to capture the essence of the characters and in some things it's more prevalent than others. Its never gonna sound good when you've got something as out there as Yakuza and they're not paying attention to what it is. I'll keep an open mind, but it doesn't sound promising.

Hugh Jackman was told not to read any comic books because they don't want him acting like a cartoon.
