Absolutely wonderful video Jared. Very clear instruction on an incredibly difficult place to work. I've done plein air horse painting and that was possibly the most difficult plein air I've ever done... including painting the Grand Canyon. New Subscriber...and thanks for being so generous with your knowledge!

Draw Paint Repeat thank you! And thanks for subscribing. I used to go to a farm to chase horses around and try to sketch them haha. It was like throwing a bunch of darts trying to hit a dark cause only 1 in 10 sketches would work. Haha they are tough.

Well...This video is definitely goes into the rewatch 10 or 1000 times list. I'm at that point where I'm only starting to approach light and how to manipulate it and properly observe/understand. Thank you for lil squeezed in tutorial, I'll try it for myself!! Also oh my finally! Always watching these plein airs from the zoo and feeling so lost to get how artist manage to deal with such a moving things. U explained enough for me to try and start using my cat as a ref for practice. Thank you for keeping up with youtube. I learn a lot from you and constantly get motivated :)
@JaredCullum6 жыл бұрын
jensheart awesome!! Chase that cat around haha it is really hard. But you’ll get the swing of it. I just recorded the next demo which is a white house. I always tell workshop students, if you’re interested in light, find a white house and sketch that. It’s the most colorful object you’ll paint because all of the effects of light are being reflected. There are greens and yellows bouncing everywhere and stark blues and purples. It’s the best experience for learning what is happening. Then you can take those lessons and apply them to local color of any animal/building/tree you observe or even enhance them to add interest or significance.

Thank you - a very helpful video; especially for the zoo and other situations were the living beings just won't hold still! lol ... I like the octopus as a subject, here at our local zoo - he/she stays put mostly - though the octopus IS watching me as intently as I watch him/her! Oh - never forget to show the art to the octopus - I swear it recognized itself.

Cristina Mazzoni thank you! This is 90% watercolor. When you’re ready get a white tube of (pro-level) gouache and just give yourself some in the corner of your watercolor box. It’s a great way to get into it and play with safely on a mostly done watercolor sketch.

Jared Loves to Draw Since you asked... I’m really impressed by the movement/flow in your paintings. In the Village Cafe and in the Creek, it just seems that something is about to happen. I would love to know if you consider this before you start and if you have any tips about this topic.
@JaredCullum6 жыл бұрын
N Monteiro I don’t consider that specifically as much as I do the general shapes. Buildings/still life’s whatever I consider the simplest shapes of value I’m looking at and whether that is dynamic or not. Does that make sense? If you like watercolor I recommend Joseph Zbukvics new movie on APV streaming about sketching and choosing a composition of shapes. It’s super helpful and well put together.

Chanandler Bong thanks for watching! Check out Marco Buccis channel- his 10 min to better painter series is info-packed. I like a minimal palette. Yellow ochre, ultramarine, cadmium or napthol red, and burnt umber or burnt sienna with white. M graham has a decent starter pack that could can get and add a couple colors too. I love their paint.

Teri Carter thank you for watching. I have another video that goes into some of it “painting light in watercolor.” Also check out Marco Buccis channel- he has the best videos explaining it with video information. The best book, in my opinion, is James Gurney’s “Color and Light” - i regularly reread it and go back through it to glean more information. Good luck!

Thanks Jared, this is one of the most amazing videos on watercolour painting on youtube. Ive watched it like a zillion times. Ive checked that you put a nice reply to everybody that writes a comment, thats very nice from your side. I was just wondering the materials youve used, it seems a escoda perla brush (no fancy hair in it, but well enough to deal with the white gouache mixed with the watercolours). Could i possibly know the brand of sketchbook you are using? It seems heavy paper but with no tooth in it. Thanks for helping the artist to be or to try to be community :-)
@JaredCullum6 жыл бұрын
Hi Jorge! Thanks for watching and commenting :) You're right on the brush. That's my favorite of the travel brush series' they have. I also like the prado. It is not a remarkable sketchbook but not a cheap one either. It's a Bee Paper Super Deluxe. I have seen better results with the stillman birn (burn?) variety of heavy weight paper sketchbooks. The bee one holds really well. It's great for sketching because it isn't sized so it dries fast and holds color. You can get a decent idea down but not a finished painting like you can on some of the higher end varieties. I find I often sketch on location with it when I don't care about the result or sell ability. Just taking notes, so to speak. Usually when I'm taking it more seriously I bring Arches 140 cold press. Hope that helps! I'm here if you have any other questions any time.

What kind of sketch pad were you working on.? I’m going to San Diego next week and that paper looks like it handles watercolor well
@JaredCullum5 жыл бұрын
Rodrigo Casarez it’s a bee paper super deluxe pad. :) it does! Stillman birn makes a good sketchbook as well. There’s also arches pads and blocks but I don’t recommend them for fast sketches as they retain the water for more complicated techniques so it makes it tough to just get an idea down fast. Then aqua journal from pentalic is also nice and blick has them in larger sizes. The spiral on this is nice so you ca flip it over.

Lovely video and sketch of course. I found it funny how you struggled to paint that tiger's head and instead drew more of a dog's skull. For me it's the other way around. You should watch aaron blaise' video when he sketching from life in the zoo with Proko. He explains why dog and cat skulls are so different and what makes them different. It really helped me out realizing what is the difference. Anyway, keep creating and best wishes for your chanel! :)

H' Nuh hi! This is a bee paper super deluxe sketchbook. It does work really well for sketching. It’s thick enough for a decent sketch but wouldn’t attempt anything final with it. :) your best paper would probably be arches cold press or Saunders Waterford. But if you just want to sketch these sketchbooks are great. Heard good things about stillman birn zeta books also.
