Back in the eighties we use to stripper fish at the steam plant about fifty yards below where the water was discharged. We would go down to the steam plant on the worst day you could have, snow, ice and if they were discharging water you were set. We would take a shad or skipjack without weight and throw about ten foot from the bank. The best we caught was in a article written by my brother-in-law in the magazine Tennessee Sportsman and it has a picture of a 52 pounder caught below the steam plant. You don’t have to have a boat to catch them. Good luck fishing.

Not trying to guide you or the guide but just some advice that`s worked for me and lots of others. Go up closer to the steam plant and use those smaller skipjack. Let them free line. Seen a many 40#+ caught like that. From my experience they prefer the smaller skipjack. Where available, hybrids seem to prefer alewife over gizzard when using live bait. I`m not able to do much fishing anymore but I`ve been known to catch a few. ;-)

Here in Oklahoma City we do that same slate unique from the bank, docks and dam for catfish and hybrid striped bass. I’ve seen 40-50lb catfish caught that way 300 yards off the bank in the middle of snowstorms and thunderstorms. That same technique off a dock here using goldfish or small 3 inch bluegills catches hybrids pretty nicely. They should start biting in March but for now it’s a foot and a half of snow to get out of here. 😂😭

When fishing for live bait, use a barbless hook. Simply pinch the barb shut with a pliers. Yes, you'll loose a few, but all you have you have to do is hold them over the tank, grab the jig by the head and and rotate the jig so the fish drops into the tank. You don't touch them and the fish are much healthier than those caught with a barbed hook.
