CBS Chicago meteorologist David Yeomans was updating viewers on the severe weather situation in the Chicago area when the live cameras captured what the National Weather Service was calling an active tornado on the ground at O'Hare International Airport.

I work at O'Hare and I can confirm it was a tornado a lot of things from the ramp were being pulled up and thrown over the roof of the terminal

@@millerkarns NWS already confirmed an EF-0 tornado hit O'Hare. Started near York and Irving Park RD and went over the airport and ended near I-190 and Mannheim road

@@JDAWGSABBATH I'm not saying there wasn't. I saw the same reports you've seen and I was watching the radar as well. I only said what I said to emphasize that people can underestimate the damage straight line winds can cause.

It passed right over the airport. I work there and it was massive. A few trees were down and I believe a few tugs were overturned

I'm not a meteorologist, but at 1:33 I could see what looked like a massive funnel moving from right to left. It's hard to tell because of the rain.

That could have been a tornado, but I think that was a heavy area of rain because right after the timestamp it looked disorganized and not connected to the ground. Had the same thought originally though.

That is definitely a tornado. You can see it moving from the right to the left. It moved in front of the lights on the bottom right. It's huge!!!!

Glad we just missed it by going on vacation yesterday. If we didn’t go on vacation my dad would have been working at O’Hare at the time. So greatful

At about 2:00 you can see something maybe it's just the clouds moving fast but it kind of looks like a tornado moving fast to the left

i live near o'hare, my house got SLAMMED by the winds and rain. the lightning was so bright that when the power went out the house was still lit up. the sky was also flashing red, were those sprites?

I was in the airport my brother is in a wheelchair and me and my mom ran out of the bridge from the plane to the airport as the tornado was on top of us.. scariest moment of my life. It sounds like a train and the floor starting coming up..

It is people like you weather "nerds" that save lives. You are as much "First Responders" as are fireman and medics. I live in Ohio and it is "tomorrow" after your storm; we could get "some" weather tonight. The intensity in your voices came through loud and clear. I do pay attention to our storm warnings. Nothing worse than a nighttime tornado let alone a rain wrapped tornado at night. Can’t imagine the confusion of being there and having to guess if it’s a tornado or not. Luckily however tho a tornado size doesn’t always correlate with its strength, you can have a large size tornado that causes minimal damage. I think we would see a lot more power flashes and debris if it were stronger

This was a paltry EF-0 tornado. The straight line winds did more damage than the tornado did.

I live in Logan Square between Kimball and Central Park. The storm was pretty wild. I saw power flashes to the southwest multiple times.

It came straight down Montrose, my ears popped and I've never heard anything that loud... Was quick but the way the rain was swirling I took cover... Scary but yeah I opened the door and wanted to go outside

Don't think it was a tornado but strong winds. Had it been a tornado on camera, would of seen power flashes. Also that debris detector is showing straight line winds. Velocity radar would show a couplet

By the way, if you’re going to try to sound intelligent when talking about an array of antennas to study high RF frequencies in the upper atmospheres, at least spell it right. A: it’s all caps B: it’s HAARP. C: it stands for High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program D: nothing has ever been proven that when HAARP is activated that weather, specifically concentrated weather in specific areas, has ever occurred. Considering the antennas are all Omni directional (meaning all directions), it’d be a bit hard to pin point a weather pattern in one precise location. E: it was electrical flashes you saw. But hey, come at me again with more “harp” “facts” you believe in.

i can confirm this was a large ef0 tornado near ohare. because there was a drop in the tornado debris signature. look close at the right at 1:33 to 1:45. there was a large but disorganized. destructive too. a small but slightly large blue circle appears on radar. and thats when i knew... that this tornado is on the ground. including a large debris signature near evanston and chicago.

I lived under the flight path for 13 years it's O'Hare.... It was once called Orchard Field... Hence the initials ORD. There's a history lesson... now back to class.

Why do they say "Debris detector" instead of just calling it by its actual name? "Correlation Coefficient" already tells you everything you need to know about the radar product and how it works. It's not just for detecting debris. 🤔

@@thefucrew9865 I did. I received the warning and stupidly tried to take my dogs out to beat the storm. I live next to the Chicago Theater, and the wind picked up, sirens went off, the sky changed colors-I took off with my dogs. There were no less than 20 people also sprinting. It was wild.

@@Ash-ng4mn , downtown ??? I was asking for the "poor peasants" that don't live downtown. I was collecting rent on the SW Side, and never heard the "TORNADO SIRENS"....NOT the alert on my phone, that everybody should have gotten, which some of my tenants didn't. Seeing the tornado as it is arriving on your street is a bit dangerous, I think.

@@vanessaindignada you see. The tornado ratings are strange. You can have f5 winds in an area with grass. And it would be rated a ef 0. But if you have ef 2 winds and caused major destruction. It could be rated an ef 5. If it were bad enough. So it depends on how bad the damage is before they know if it's an ef 4

Curious why your mind gravitates so specifically towards this being an EF4 tornado. Why not EF3? Why not EF2? There’s nothing to suggest anything related to the strength of the tornado based on this footage. Educate yourself on google.

@cos3 those cameras are municipal cameras that CBS can tap into for the live feed. They do not belong to CBS. Storm Chaser channels on KZbin use the same access on highway cameras throughout the US for their live broadcasts.

I wouldn't rule it out, unfortunately. I read that this storm had a potential possibility for generating "sneaky" tornados that would not be detected on radar, due to some unusual meteorological conditions. So as good as the radar is, and how much detection technology has improved over the years... It's not foolproof. Sometimes nothing beats your senses and a good spotter.

@@TOOL_MARKS , but even when the National.Weather Service had "confirmed" it, there were no sirens. Not near O'Hare, nor near Midway. Sad that there is an early warning system and it sits there for years with no testing, nor actual.emergency use. When was the last time they sounded ??? Isn't there a "test" every first Tuesday of the month ???

@@NewYorkPlaneSpotter they can. Strong F2 or weak F3 tornadoes are producing 140 mph winds....enough to create lift over the wings and flip or tumble a large jet. Not to mention they can cause havoc with pushing and picking up ground equipment and creating tons of FOD.
