LIVE: China Fuelling Insurgency in Mozambique Through Smuggling? | Firstpost Africa
Welcome to Firstpost Africa with Alyson Le Grange.
We are live from Durban, South Africa.
Our top focus today is on how illicit trade with China is fuelling insurgency in the African nation of Mozambique. Smuggling of timber from Mozambique to China, estimated to be worth $23 million a year, is helping fund the Islamist insurgency Cabo Delgado in the north of the country. Insurgent controlled areas of Mozambique have been a breeding ground for illegal trade and for criminal gangs.
