Bottom line being, the West in general and the US in particular doesn't have a right to tell Africans with whom they can and cannot do business. If someone else offers a better deal, of course they would choose the better deal. You have to imagine how awful the West has been in Africa so far, to the point that supposedly uncivilized countries like China and Russia are embraced as a better alternative.

And I’m still holding my breath for the West to charge and imprison unscrupulous western private sector precious resource players operating in Africa. Infrastructure is a key starting point for just about all countries and it’s coming in regardless of the motivation. Its weird to see how bad the infrastructure is in the different countries but, million dollars/billion dollar deals are being made with other countries. It’s also weird to see how much Westerners are disliked but our money is always needed and welcomed…Africa is rich in resources that OTHERS profit off of. Don’t be madd at Westerns, everyone just know how to play the game and historically Africa always get the short stick-know thy enemies. What African country would do business with a country where in present day doesn’t allow black people (and NO, I’m not referring to only black Americans) in certain places. As someone who's spent most of their life in Africa, I have to say this is a very shallow take on the issue. It's cool that you're covering it I guess, but you could have made much better use with 13 minutes. Africa will be the literal and financial fuel for this "4th industrial revolution" we keep hearing about and all the major players have been doing whatever it takes to stay competitive. America has probably been the biggest player in this. Starting wars, funding rebellions, killing those influential individuals who call for financial independence and vertical integration of industry. Once the country has been ravaged beyond repair, armies of corporations come swooping in to pillage resources as they please, while taking all the large contracts for development which are themselves funded (through loans) by the large American banks. Then France takes a turn, then the U.K., then Israel, and on and on and on. The Berlin conference is when the world's most powerful western governments decided Africa would be a necessary sacrifice to achieve greatness and prosperity. Eventually, China got wise and the race was on.

Meanwhile the same African leaders will send their kids to study in Europe and America, go abroad for medical treatments, and vacation overseas also. Heck, some will even fly business class to go watch Barcelona or Chealsea FC play. Meanwhile their stadiums back home are crumbling. It is up to the African leaders to build their countries from the bottom up, and not turn to shortcuts. This idea that Africa is weak and so must be eternally aided must stop. If Africans cannot stand up for themselves, then no one will. By the way, just a few decades ago, Chinese people were dying of starvation. But now China is one of the biggest economic powers. Why, because they decided to stand up for themselves. If they didn't, they'd still simply be the world's factory. But China has decided to unabashedly copy western technology and make some of their own. And it is working for them. Ok, here's the best way I can explain it: You go to a lender for a car loan. You can't find a decent-paying job so you default on your car loan. The lender says, "No problem. If you never shop at 'X' named grocery store again, we will forgive your car loan". Debtor says, "You got it. 'X' grocery store goes out of business, the lender brings in 'Y' grocery store (which they have a financial interest in), & the cost of the debtor's groceries skyrocket which in turn chains him/her to a financial treadmill for life.

The truth is our leaders make those deals. China comes and does shady jobs. Many in the government squander that money so in the end what we can see is the shoddy work the Chinese did!!! So there is no money to payback the debt as the money wasn't used to generate any income. In the end, you have a man surviving on less than a dollar a day, having to pay 16 to 24% in retail taxes just to buy basic stuff. Did I confuse you more? Hope not.

I love your shows Trevor's. But that's not the angle we should be looking. First, debt is never a measure of progress. Japan has 237% dept to GDP ratio yet its one of the most advanced nations. Secondly, Africa has had over 60 years of close ties with western nations such as US and and Britain. Yet, we have struggled so long with poverty and infrastructure. China may have a political agenda, but at least we have global-standard railways, roads, electricity, water supply. Western style is simple: KEEP THEM POOR AND DEPENDENT. Chinese is also simple: MAKE THEM WEALTHIER BUT INDEBTED. I'd choose the latter anytime.
@cannydeng67852 жыл бұрын
Exactly!!!!! When we invest in something, we aim at profits. When China spent a lot of money, they didn’t really expect to have profits, the main reason is to help African people to get out of poverty , which can maintain the world peace. If there’s anything in return, there would be some political support to China, which makes a better balance of the world super powers and development of all the countries. China knows very well, if you want a place to be wealthy, first you build a road. This episode is such a disappointment, cause you don’t see the significance change for the African people. Instead, you are calling the helper a bag guy. What’s the purpose? Do you prefer African people to be poor and always depend on the western countries?

This is disgraceful, Trevor. China as you said is the only one willingly to invest in Africa at interest rates so ridiculous that nobody else would do it. Yes its for soft power but at the very least Africa has on-going infrastructure, which it so desperately needs to modernize its society and economy. China does have its interest in Africa but what it does differently is to use economic instead of military methods, because China wants Africa to prosper long terms so in turn China can prosper, no Chinese business man wants thier potential customers to fall into poverty, its not the Chinese ways of doing business. It's a sticky topic for sure my guy. By definition, if they were to take over the airport it would become a colony of China (a portion of land outside of a country belonging to said country). It's also not a situation if what China is doing is better than what the west or Europe has done, it's the fact that external powers are still exploiting Africa. China does mineral exploration and exploitation, so I would not be surprised if the airport was built so to easily transport raw materials. In the short-term, sure what China has done has been beneficial. But this will be transient once China has got what they want or if Africans cannot maintain the infrastructure.

They spoke French, because Benin was colonized by France since 19 century, and worked with locals. It is a win-win thing. I don't understand why Chinese companies are always condemned as forced labor or invasion. What Chinese companies do is just the same thing those US companies, like NIKE, APPLE, TESLA keep doing in China for decades. Africa has not allowed anything, It is reestabling itself from the ruins of colonialism. Africans now understand their voice matters. That is why they have stood up and make a decision to choose China and now the colonial countries are complaining. Africa is uniting and moving ahead.

Africa does not need money from western countries, in fact aid has done more damage to Africa. Technology, Education and is what it needs and they have been developing to that. Cz it has resources and no technology/machinery to get the resources. That is Why leaders like Mandela emphasized on Education. Not that Africans are illiterate. The world system is a bit westernized. I think Africans are very smart,cz they learn their education and also foreign education which most Europeans and western people never learn beyond their own and stick to their continents.

Workers getting treated differently because of where they are from happens in a lot of places. Come to Hong Kong and see it for yourself. Western people gets paid much more than the locals even when they have similar education and credentials. These so called “expats” gets paid handsomely plus allowance to do a job other locals can. But because the companies are from the west, they feel the need to send over some one of their own to “offer international perspective” or to ”supervise” the local people

I found the argument pretty weak, that chinese workers are brought as supervisors and get a higher average pay. I mean you can bet that in BMW factories in China a lot of the high ranking positions are held by Germans as well and so their average pay would be. a lot higher as well. To me, I'd still side with China's policy over the west, china is not forcing anyone to take their loans, the African governments are taking the loan because of their selfish interest. Take my country Nigeria for example, the government takes the loan and the people in government embezzle the loan without spending or spend very less of it on any profitable project, thereby no way to pay back the loan.😊
