Should also mention that Norman is a hell of a guy to take the time to chat with you and the guests. Really says something about his character. Just a class act.

This is the best music production content on youtube. What a good setup with an interview/deconstruction combo. Karl, your research and preparation is fantastic. I appreciate all of the work you put into this.

Norman is even more of a legend for showing up like this! Super interesting stuff, you've created a super excellent long form interview format! It's like slightly less accessible Song Exploder for production nerds
@KarlBoltzmann
@KarlBoltzmann Жыл бұрын
I agree! I'm thinking I might try to shorten it a bit next time, so it's a bit more accessible. I was having so much fun, I didn't realize how long it was going until the end.

@@KarlBoltzmann I like the longer format! You always get into more tangents and interesting bits when you get to just talk to somebody for 2 hours, that's how you get moments like Norman dancing as his least favourite football manager gets sacked haha.

Yeah, that's a great point. That was a great moment. I think there's room for improvement on my end, but it's always cool to find a new format that works for people.

Norman is an absolute gent. What a nice guy. If you ever get him back to do another it would be good to do it slightly differently and instead of building track from start to end, go through building a track from the first sample groove he started from and his thought process on building the track up, and if he can remember why he chose stuff to add. He seems to like talking about all that stuff and it's really interesting. Thanks to you both for this. PS 'Mighty Dub Katz - Magic Carpet Ride' would be great to look at as it's an amazing mash up of bits of everything.
@KarlBoltzmann
@KarlBoltzmann Жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's a cool idea. I asked him if he remembered making this track and the order of things and he told me that he didn't remember the specifics. Maybe on another track he might? Who knows.

Just came across this series of videos. So awesome. If you do more stuff like this I think it would actually be cool to get even more into the nitty gritty, even though you mentioned you wanted to make it more accessible-- seeing every atom of the song coming together is super interesting, to me at least.
@KarlBoltzmann
@KarlBoltzmann 11 ай бұрын
I totally agree. It would be great to go even further into the weeds, but it might involve talking to the mixers and other engineers who were there to really gain a greater understanding of how the tracks were built. Unfortunately, in this case, Norman doesn't remember a lot of the intimate details about the creation of these tracks, so there wasn't much deeper to go. Maybe in the future with other artists I can get get details.

@KarlBoltzmann It's interesting that you mentioned memorization of the atmosphere while creating. I have similar with my works. I can look at some part of the image and my brain reminds me what song I listened to 15 years ago while drawing it.
@KarlBoltzmann
@KarlBoltzmann Жыл бұрын
Interesting. I've never felt like I have a particularly good memory (I cannot remember people's names or street names for the life of me) but I do remember very detailed specifics about almost every song I've written and recorded over the last 20-25 years. There must be something about the creative process and working on a piece of art that amplifies the region in the brain responsible for long term memory.
