The fact that there is a recording of the exact same opera 20 years earlier of MacNeil in the title role and all the elements are as physically supple here as they had been in 1957 is as miraculous as the singing itself is. While his technique is physically the same as Leonard Warren as a Verdi baritone there is something more "real" about Mac than Warren...certainly from a theatrical standpoint. "Acuti" phrases like this are the hardest aspect of maintaining a great performance of one the greatest roles ever written. To be successful at doing MORE than the composer asks over a gruelingly busy career in a pressure cooker like the MET is truly remarkable

There's a recording of MacNeil's Rigoletto from 1957? The earliest one I'm aware of is his studio recording from 1961 (with Joan Sutherland as Gilda and Renato Cioni as the Duke).

As I recall, MacNeil had missed the premiere because of illness. Milnes sang the premiere. Mac then rose from his sickbed to sing the "Live From the Met" telecast. And he was also 55 years old. So he is not at his best here. Even so, Mac here is superior to every contemporary Verdi baritone whom I'm aware of. The only such baritone in roughly the same zip code is Quinn Kelsey.

I saw and heard him at the Metropolitan Opera several times. The greatest baritone of them all. High F, G, and As no competition.

No one absolutely no baritone has more music in their voice not to mention he commonly sang to an A or B flat in performances unheard of for most baritones.

Great performance! I remember him from the 1970s. Wonderful Rigoletto, Germont, too. Can you post the entire opera? Who is the Gilda? The Duke? Thanks for posting all your wonderful things!
@trrill10 жыл бұрын
Cotrubas is the Gilda; Domingo's the Duke. Frankly I can hardly tolerate either of them. Someone else has posted the entire performance here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q5CcZWiPrLOoi9U

trrill If you ignore all of the tension and pushing in Domingo, he's pretty enjoyable to listen to, with a bit more punch to his voice than most Dukes. Cotrubas annoys the hell out of me. The weird expressions she makes while singing makes it look like she's struggling to keep denchers in her mouth. Her acting is hammy at best, and one can't help but look at all the veins popping out whenever she sings anything on top of or above the staff. It doesn't help that her voice isn't really that interesting on the whole either. I'm spoiled by Sutherland. Lol. Dream cast of Rigoletto: Rigoletto: MacNeil [duh!] Gilda: Sutherland or maybe Valerie Masterson Duke: Bonisolli or Corelli if it were a good day for the latter Maddalena: Marilyn Horne or Isola Jones, who does a great job in this production! Sparafucile: Cesare Siepi or James Morris.

@@xxsaruman82xx87 Yeah, I guess those two music degrees in classical voice, the Masters degree being from New York conservatory were just pretend. Very rude of you to insult me over a matter of opinion. Just because I don’t agree with you doesn’t mean you have to behave that way.
