Live fire training is not wasting taxpayers money. It allows people to become familiar with the actual operation of the weapon under safe conditions. Learning how to use a weapon system in the middle of war has a very steep, very short, learning curve. Plus, it uses up old inventory which is replaced with newer ammo......people in the defense industry get to keep their jobs AND PAY TAXES WHICH PARTIALLY SUBSIDIZES THE AMMO BEING USED.

To add to this wonderful comment... a) Its necessary to know for certain the weapon system actually WORKS.. Imagine you want to fire a ASW rockets in a warzone againist an enemy submarine, and rocket just refuses to leave the launcher because something short-circuited and no one noticed it beforehand. And all you have is a crew only did "simulated" launches and doesn't even know the difference let alone how to handle the situation. b) Soldiers need to know what actually firing a weapon "feels" like, because noise, forces involved will make a man feel small... There is quite a difference between reading the text "safety to auto, chamber the first round, aim, pull the trigger, count 6 round burst, release trigger, safety on" and actually firing an assault rifle on full-auto that literally touches your face. I can easily say when you withness a main battle tank firing its main gun 20 few meters away from you for the first time, you won't be remembering what you were doing, let alone do it properly. And warships don't fire "puny" 20kg tank rounds, I'd imagine a 700kg missile leaving the VLS tube just meters away would be an "enlightening" experience to entire crew.. c) Plus, let's talk about a soldier's faith in weaponary... Before serving in the military, reading a M-48A5(T1)'s specs on wiki, seeing it on the internet or even seeing it in real life as it slowly crawls around doesn't raise much confidence, to say the least. However, all the laughing and ridiculing stops when you withness it unleashing hell with its main gun on simulated targets several kms away, easily ripping the guts out of a few decommissioned APCs first, then level a small building, then dozens of water filled baloons (simulating troops out in the open), and finally hit a few fortified positions. All within like 3 minutes despite the fact that was a training and went with a much slower pace than what it could have been. Every infantry standing there understood if they were on the recieving end, they would either be riding similarly ill-protected APC/IFV or dismounted to similar locations; and be dead in either case. Only then, everyone was like "so yeah, this old beast can still do some damage, glad its on our side". I served as short-term conscript infantry, so we had no real interaction with tanks or tank crews but commanders still insisted we have to withness tank live fire trainings despite it took a day off from our own training, and I understand why. My hate towards that "useless rusty tin can that should be melted as scrap metal" disappeared with that experience. Now instead, I'll say this: An "obsolete" tank like M48A5 will still kill everyone inside the best of the best IFVs (like Puma or CV90) with one shot, and even best AP rounds from heaviest of autocannons won't get through its armor. HEAT rounds from its 105mm main gun will penetrate a meter-thick concrete wall of a bunker and kill you inside. Run, and its APERS rounds will rain metal flechettes on you. A tank, even an old one like M48 or T-55 is no joke, and its last thing a soldier will ever want to face directly on an open battlefield. So yeah, militaries MUST do live fire trainings and combined arms trainings. If money is a problem, they should just reduce their overall inventory, and start doing live fire trainings.. Its just better that way.

Live fire training also can identify faults with the weapons systems too...under simulated combat conditions. The US Navy didnt live fire their Mk 14 torpedos until they were fighting the Imperial Japanese, they found the torpedos were hopeless as the magnetic influence mode didnt work, the impact fuze was very angle of attack sensitive, it ran far deeper than when tested without the warhead (duh) and sadly for USS Tang its gyros could jam on launch and circle back to the launching submarine
