Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb hands down the sentencing of US government worker Anne Sacoolas for causing the death of 19-year-old Harry Dunn by careless driving.
She was driving on the wrong side of the road near a US airbase in Northamptonshire when the collision occurred and fled the UK days later, claiming diplomatic immunity.
The US government has advised Harry Dunn’s killer not to attend her sentencing hearing - with a renewed application for her to appear via video-link granted.
The 45-year-old had diplomatic immunity asserted on her behalf by the US government after the crash near RAF Croughton, in Northamptonshire, and was able to leave the UK 19 days after the incident.
Sacoolas pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving in October, where sentencing judge Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb urged her to return to Britain to face justice.
But, confirming a renewed application for her to appear via video-link has been granted, a court official said: “The application made jointly by the prosecution and defence for Mrs Sacoolas to participate and be sentenced by live link has been renewed.

When does the justice come? This is an absolute travesty. Harry's poor family have been utterly betrayed.

So she kills a young man by disregarding the rules of the roads in the UK and gets an 8 month jail sentence suspended for 12 months. All she has to do is avoid getting in trouble with the law for 1 year and she gets off without serving a day for killing someone & leaving the country. At most her children would have to miss her for 8 months. Harry Dunn's family get to miss him for the rest of their lives.

Can't believe what i have just heard. More concern for her kids than for Harrys life that she has stolen. She has gotten away with killing this young man. Where is the justice. My heart goes out to Harry's parents and family.

How could it possibly affect American national interests for her to travel to this country for sentence. Reminds me of when America refused extradition of an IRA gunman who shot a British soldier. And we have a Special Relationship. Yeah, right.

It’s a bit confusing. She has been sentenced but she remains free in the USA. So as the sentence is suspended for 12 months what happened if she visits the UK after that time? Will she be a free person having “served her sentence”?

This suspended sentence is not served unless the offender commits and is charged for a further like offence in the UK within the 12 month suspension period. If convicted for the further new offence the judge will add on the 8 month suspended sentence to whatever sentence is handed down for the new offence. Therefore on this case the offender being out of the UK does not effect things. If she returned to the UK within the 12 month suspension period she would be a free woman who had been convicted and had been handed down a suspended sentence. Hope this helps.

The "special" relationship the US and the UK have on show again for all to see. Reminds me of an abused spouse who won't leave their partner.

At the end of the day, it was a tragic accident, caused by absent mindedness. It could happen to anyone. It doesn't make her a bad person. There is no sentence that will bring him back.

Absent minded or empty headed? Either way Sacoolas showed herself to be a gutless coward unwilling to face the music. Accidents happen but this was gross carelessness and the contempt shown to Dunn's family and UK courts has been plain to see.

Here's a question or a very simple solution... the next time the Americans want someone we just say no.. for example they wanted julian Assange when he hid in the embassy for years and we paid a fortune for police to wait for him to come out. Or when they wanted hamza we just handed him willingly... next time we just say no.

This is getting ridiculous, of course it's a tragedy but it was also an accident and it's also true that America does not extradite it's own, that's a fact whether we like it or not.
