Thanks Matt for letting us tag along this morning. It looks so peaceful out there in the rice fields. Being Mother's Day you have to get back home for all that so it was good to see LIVE content as it really happens. I don't have questions because you were so thorough in explaining what stage you are at in the rice growing process.

The N is really NH4+ and OH- that bonds with the negative charges on the clay and organic partial. The displaced Ca++ is then in the soil water solution held by surface tension. The negative charges is known or expressed as CEC or cation exchange capacity. The reason for partly drying the soil is for physically altering the soil, not for chemical reasons. If the soil was actually dry then the ammonia would move to the atmosphere when the water or aqua part is evaporated. Aqua ammonia is 25% NH3 and 75% water. Anhydrous ammonia is 100% ammonia.

I got into your live feed about half way, great job. It sounded like Glridley is getting hot early this year. Question: when you look at the flooded fields, which fields had two passes and what field has three passes with the tractor? Is it just to get the ground as flat as can be before flooding, so the rice can be planted in a uniform flat field? Is it to get rid of last years stubble to get it to decompose? Last week you were worried about the field being too wet. The field subject to compaction from the tractor tires. Then this week the fields had been flooded. The flooding of the fields does not take care of the compaction in the field by the tractors? After seeding, would you be able to see what areas were compacted by a lack of growing rice? This is Sunday, Have a great Mothers Day with your wife and children.

Hi Frank, the fields that had an extra pass with the sweeps were the ones that were to wet to continue with our normal order of operations (2 chisel plow passes, two disc passes and a land plane pass) + fertilizer. The tillage work is to create a dry seed bed and level out the field as best as possible. -M.

Frank Smith I believe the stubble decomposes during the winter while the fields are flooded with "winter water". The birds love it. You may recall that the first step in this season was to remove the water from the fields. The reason Matthew wants the fields dry is to avoid compaction while he does the 6 tractor passes. Matthew doesn't always show the same fields, video to video. The ones that needed to be dried out have not yet been flooded. The flooded ones had all their field work done before they were irrigated and then seeded. I hope that helps answer your questions.

Hi Matthew, Are you planting any new hybrid rice this year?

Does rice pollen travel very far or is it not likely to cross pollen from plant to the next plant like wheat? Does not the foundation seed next door have some pollen drift.

Pick UP (from the live chat comments): It sounds like you have fields that are next to a river that regularly overflows onto your fields. Before the Oroville Dam was built with its concommitant flood control structures, Matthew's fields would have flooded when the river got too high but not in a way that would allow him to grow rice because he would not be able to control the water. Now the water is controlled from Oroville Dam all the way (several hundred miles) to southern California (near Los Angeles) so the water stays within the river banks (usually!), and it is also controlled on Matthew's fields by the irrigation infrastructure he has built. If you look at Matthew's fields, you will see he has a lot of infrastructure to control the water as it comes onto the fields (and to get it onto the fields initially). He has built checks (the banks between the fields), installed gates to let water in and out of the field, and so forth. I am afraid you will not be able to grow rice on your land until you figure out how to control the river water. Which country do you live in, and what is the name of your river?

@@Ricefarmingtv: From an former MS Delta Resident; Interesting you flood fields then plant. Recall 30 years ago they would drill the rice into the ground and if no rain they would irrigate. As a former Cotton & Soybean farmer hats off to you all! Thanks for sharing your farm, brings back wonderful memories.
