Based on some high school arithmetic, a few shut-off valves installed closer together within Houston would have saved the company a lot of money. Also invest in some inexpensive concrete barriers to place around critical valves and exposed piping.

This valve was hit by an SUV that crashed through a chain link fence before hitting the valve. I don't see how one can blame the pipeline owner for someone else's act. Perhaps some commenters should give up gasoline, natural gas, electricity, water and other utilities as all of these structures could see accidents by third parties. Let's not forget any materials derived from mines as cave in accidents have occurred over time. And thanks for the 20/20 hindsight. Take your foresight and prevent accidents. Hindsight is of little value.
