I have a lot of sympathy for Fani Willis. As much as I think the relationship with the special prosecutor was bad judgement (for optics, but not legal conflict), she was under unbelievable amount of pressure while facing constant death threats and had to move out of her home. She felt lonely. It is easy for others to pick on her after the fact when you can't even imagine what she had to go through day to day. She is human yet we expect her to be perfect all the time.

I'm not Ron, but I'll chime in. Last year Trump was found liable for rape and defamation with the outcome of a judgment against him of $5 million. Next he was found liable for defamation and punitive damages for a judgment of $83.3 million. Most recently he was found liable for fraud and conspiracy to commit fraud for a judgment again, this time for what amounted to $464 million. He now sits for a criminal trial with a judge who has iron control over his courtroom. We're anxious to toss him into jail, but we've got to let the justice system work, as cumbersome as it is sometimes.

There is something deeply corrupt there in the background that appears to be slowing everything down and I believe Merrick Garland is somehow involved, as if someone very powerful is influencing him! I'm inclined to agree with Anthony, also not having any law degree, however, I have been following American politics closely now for many years from NZ, especially over the past 10 years and while all the experts may say, "No that will never happen!" but all the signs for us tell us "Yes, it will!" and eventually it does happen and they just shrug and say "Ah, Yeah, These things happen." as if it's of no consequence, not important at all and move right along, same game elsewhere. I've never really trusted Joe Biden always suspecting that he will eventually sell out the "Progressives" when it is expedient to do so. I think there are so many weird and wonderful powerful "Groups" and everyone seems to have one foot in one or other of them and someone always has someone else by the "Balls" and no one can be "Trusted"! Justice is "Not Equal" In The USA for everyone! "That is as I see it!" As George Orwell put it, in Animal Farm, "All animals are equal, but, some animals are more equal than others!"

Best Friends Animal Society worked with Michael Vick's dogs to rehab them. 2008, 22 of the most traumatized dogs came to Best Friends, where the quest to rehabilitate them began. The number of people needing to be investigated and charged by Garland's office was enormous upon him taking office. Before even getting his feet wet he had to deal with literally thousands of violations and violators re the Jan 6th insurrection. As he claimed at the outset, he started at the bottom and working his way up through the instigators , which of course leads to Trump. Unfortunately the case was far larger than he ever imagined, and the number of people charged and processed was huge. The people near the top was huge as well, and in interviews Garland kept explaining that no one was above the law and that they were working their way through all the evidence. Realizing at last that there was more than he could probably get through during his term in office, he brought Jack Smith on board and Jack could just concentrate on the Trump aspect, which he has done a great job on. I don't think an Attorney General has ever inherited such a monumental task in the history of the US, so I sympathize with Garland, however even being new on the job, or should I say especially being new on the job, he should have recognized sooner the magnitude of the task, and got more help sooner. I can't imagine being Garland coming into a new job and immediately being faced with this when you don't even know where the washrooms or pencil sharpeners are kept. Organizing staff, knowing who does what, and all the procedural organization while trying to negotiate a huge criminal case must have been overwhelming at first.

I believe Garland offered Smith the position long before Smith arrived. Smith probably had to finish his Hague work and move his family first.

@@MonkeyHill1955 Did you think Garland was going to let it go on forever? If Biden didn't get re elected, his job would end at the end of Biden's term. Trump could see the charges coming and made a rush to announce his candidacy, thinking they wouldn't charge a presidential candidate, but like Garland said, "the law is the law, and nobody is above the law." The biggest crime would be if Trump is not held responsible for the election interference crimes and trying to overthrow the government. That has got to be the worst crimes a president of the United States has ever committed. Bringing Smith on board was not a snap decision, it took a lot of planning and scheduling on the part of Garland and Smith. It is not like either was sitting around waiting for something to do, and Smith has an investigative team that moves with him.

Additionally, the Senate Republicans slow-walked confirming him and he was unable to begin the task until March 11, 2021. Jack Smith did have to wrap up some details at Le Hague but he also had a health problem he had to address before starting this job.

Wasn't Jack Smith preparing for another Hague trial and then recoveting from a serious leg injury when Merritt Garland asked him to handle the charges against 45? I feel that should be taken into consideration when blaming Garland for dragging his feet on bringing those charges. In addition, I feel Jack Smith was meticulous in lining up his board pieces for what would be a masterful chess game, and that took some time. Plus, didn't Garland have to clean out the Justice Department when he took it over from the corruption of Barr? Though I am disappointed in the slowness of bringing 45 to justice, I feel it is unfair to blame Garland for inaction.
