Megalodon (Carcharocles megalodon), meaning "big tooth," is an extinct species of shark that lived approximately 23 to 2.6 million years ago (mya), during the Early Miocene to the end of the Pliocene. There had been some debate regarding the taxonomy of megalodon: some researchers argued that it was of the family Lamnidae and closely related to the great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias), while others argued that it belonged to the extinct family Otodontidae; presently, there is near unanimous consensus that the latter view is correct. Its genus placement is still debated, authors placing it in either Carcharocles, Megaselachus, Otodus, or Procarcharodon. The shark has made appearances in several media, such as the Discovery Channel's docufiction Megalodon: The Monster Shark Lives.
Scientists suggest that megalodon looked like a stockier version of the great white shark, though it may have looked similar to the basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus) or the sand tiger shark (Carcharias taurus). Regarded as one of the largest and most powerful fish to have ever lived, fossil remains of megalodon suggest that this giant shark reached a length of 18 meters (59 ft). Their large jaws could exert a bite force of up to 108,500 to 182,200 newtons (24,390 to 40,960 lbf). Their teeth were thick and robust, built for grabbing prey and breaking bone.
Megalodon probably had a profound impact on the structure of marine communities. The fossil record indicates that it had a cosmopolitan distribution. It probably targeted large prey, such as whales, seals, and giant turtles. Juveniles inhabited warm coastal waters where they would feed on fish and small whales. Unlike the great white, which attacks prey from the soft underside, megalodon probably used its strong jaws to break through the chest cavity and puncture the heart and lungs of its prey.

My first issue with Ridddle's video is that he claims that the scientists concluded that it could *only* have been a Megalodon. I think scientists would be the last people to believe the fairy tale that the Megalodon isn't extinct. It is definitely extinct.

Personally, although his story might be "wrong" about the Megaladon, I still believe there's no definitive way to say, Megaladons or any other previously believed extinct animal, doesn't still exist. As stated, only 5% of the ocean has been explored. Also, now my dates are wrong HOWEVER my story IS NOT - I do believe in the 1930's - 1950's 2 men, one Navy Officer of sorts and a Scientist, journeyed into the the Mariana Trench and discovered something that was literally kept zipped up from the public. Around 25,000 ft their vessel had an unexpected and unplanned stop. There was NO MALFUNCTION. To see why they were stopped the men turned on the camera and were terrified to discover an UNKNOWN MASSIVELY LARGE creature chewing on the 2 manned vessel. This creature was so strong it literally stopped the vessel in its tracks! They fired their engines but didn't move, it wasn't even strong enough to play tug-o-war with this Gigantic Creature. Instead, whether it was the team up top or the men themselves I can't remember, but the only way the men were freed were by firing additional rocket propulsions (I might be saying this wrong but you get the gist). Anyways, this terrified the men and they sacked the remaining time meant to explore. It took them between 3-5 hrs both ways (down & up) and they only spent 12 mins down below at the bottom! Now yrs later a second crew went out, even deeper and for longer. It was an unmanned vessel. Out of no where things went horribly wrong and not b/c of the ppl on the expedition but b/c of an unknown creature - it KEPT the vessel, it never surfaced. Also a large collection of Magaldon teeth come from the Trench for unknown reasons. Lastly - there's a large amount of marine life of all sizes, shapes and colors at the bottom, as well as natural hot springs that reach up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit; the reason the water doesn't boil though is from the surrounding pressure. Discoveries have shown an entire city living in its depths! As for the video, maybe he messed up on the dates but that doesn't mean its fake and I believe the answer should be UNKNOWN as to the existence of the Magaladon and any other water based creature!

What most people don't understand is the Mariana Trench is so deep the pressure is too much for a large fish to survive. The largest fish found down there is the incredibly rare snailfish, which has a maximum size of 30 inches long. When people claim megalodon still exists, they should at least say it was "spotted" near the surface. The deepest sharks have been known to live, isn't anywhere close to the depth of the Mariana Trench. Something as HUGE as megalodon would not have the correct body proportions ans size to withstand the water pressure that deep. So, for people making claims like this, at least do your research!

Yo Billy, FYI, it has been documented that there are giant squids on the way down there up to 43 feet long in size. I'm with you that there are no Megalodons down there, however if there were, I think a 40 foot squid would be enough to satiate a Megalodon.
