I am a teacher and my channel will show you how to metal detect for beginners all the way through advanced techniques for metal detectorists. I am the owner of a Minelab Safari Metal Detector, a Garrett AT Pro (at pro metal detector youtube), a WOT coil and I can teach you how to recover the deepest of targets with a metal detector. My metal detecting finds include many gold and platinum rings and early American coins as well as British Colonial coins and Spanish Colonial Coins. Metal detecting is a hobby that millions of people around the world do. All you need to try is a metal detector some batteries, a digging tool and some patience. My first metal detector cost 30 dollars at BJ's and I dug enough signals to buy my first "real" metal detector with the change that I found with the 30 dollar toy model. I decided to start Metal detecting on KZbin because I feel the need to teach what I know. It has been a life changing activity for me and I want to share what I know. It is my hope that Metal Detecting NYC can become one of the biggest metal detecting youtube channels. My beach instructional videos include (or will include soon) , "metal detecting dry sand", (choosing a) "metal detecting sand scoop" and "surf hunting". On land, I use the website historic aerials to survey the history of a site so that I can continue metal detecting old homesites and other places with a lot of history. You need to get a rootslayer shovel.I bought a big and small one from HomeDepot delivered to the house.No more blisters.I carry the small one to detect and the big one to tear out ivy and such in the yard.You'll make a lot less messy hole with this digger.It will cut through roots up to 2" with ease,too.

I agree with others, Do a better job of putting the dirt back in the hole, please. I am new at detecting, but even I would try to leave less dirt on the grass pointing to my “perfect” plug.

A detectorist can be careful to put the plug back over the hole but if half the dirt is still out in the grass around the hole there is a problem. A drop cloth solves this problem. I use a small wash cloth where I dig in parks that have grass and when I move from a spot you cannot even tell I was ever there since there is no dirt left outside around the hole that belongs in the ground. In the long term it probably doesn't matter, but in the short term it looks unsightly when a detectorist leaves a big dirty mess around the hole he attempted to fill back in that's minus half the dirt. What Merrill does is not good for the hobby's reputation. We should leave no trace when we are done digging.

This is the only thing I don't like that Merrill does. If everyone used a drop cloth when digging in grass yards or fields you would not even be able to tell where he dug. The mess will disappear after a good rain but the point is the dirt will not be back where it came from and you will be able to see a small crater where he dug, but in the short term before it rains it will look horrible where he and others who dig like he does have dug. No wonder city parks stop folks from digging.

I have mentioned this to Merrill also. He leaves a lot of the dirt outside of the hole down in the grass when he is done. I suggested he do what I do when I dig in grass which is to use a drop cloth to put the dirt on and then he could pour all the dirt back in the hole from which it came from. He's not listening.
