Delightful event. They are amazing survivors! And so beautiful! Thank you so much! I am trying to attract them this year. I'm worried I have located the nest box too close to the house.. On the back pergola pole. Should that be a concern? It is very quiet there backing onto a golf course.

If it is too close, the Bluebirds may attack the windows when seeing their reflection. Thinking that another Bluebird is in their territory.

That was wonderful! It's such a joy to watch all of the great footage that you capture. Your audio is excellent, as well. My daily hikes through the meadows near my house abound with the soft, delicate Bluebird "songs" that are present in your video here. There's also been a group of about 20-30 Bluebirds who toughed out the CT winter in the nature preserve forest located behind my house. They always stayed together, and I'd stumble into them while they were foraging on the ground or roosting in a tree, sometimes enduring 10-20 degree temperatures. Thanks for sharing!

That was wonderful! I've had a bluebird house for 7 or 8 years but have never gotten that view inside. I'm glad that House Wren didn't come back and do what they are known for. When the parents were feeding inside the nest, I didn't see any dried mealworms. Do you stop putting dried mealworms out when the young are in the nest? I have been thinking that since they have no moisture in them the young won't be getting enough water and the parents would not have evolved to deal with feeding dried foods (since bugs are always live and have water in them). I always leave the dried mealworms out and they quickly empty the feeder when the chicks are in the nest. I'm thinking about adding a bit of water to the dried mealworms.
@BirdsWalkingDown Жыл бұрын
I don't think the parents would feed dried mealworms to the babies. But I use "fresh" mealworms. I have a link on my Amazon store www.amazon.com/shop/birdswalkingdown/list/31WCYR1LYJWY5

Beautiful little family, and you can tell they are so proud and such loving parents. I'm going to pick up some wood next time I'm at the hardware store and build a few nesting boxes and I also want to build some cold weather boxes as we had a spell this past December where right around Christmas it went from nearly 60 degrees out down to -15 in just a few short hours and it had me concerned for the birds. I always set up brush piles for them in the fall to seek shelter in from the cold and weather during winter but a spell that cold has made me see cold weather refuge boxes are a must have as well. I wonder if one couldn't perhaps make a few boxes that had a way to detach and re-attach the roof, that way in the breeding months one could use them as nesting boxes with the entrance hole near the top and then in winter flip them around and attach the roof so that the entrance is lower down?
@BirdsWalkingDown Жыл бұрын
That's a wonderful idea to build nesting boxes and cold weather refuge boxes for the birds. Providing shelter for them during extreme weather conditions is indeed important for their well-being. Why is it better to have the entrance lower for Winter? My birdhouses have a "double roof" design which would probably make it easier to attach the roof on either end. You can see my design here. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fIGooaiJiat3adk

A tit has built a nest in the birdhouse on my balcony. I hear some baby tit sounds /singing (?) from inside. Pigeons also come to our balcony. I think they do disturb the tits' family .Is there anything we should do to help our guests ? We live on the 8th floor. Will our chickens be safe while fledgling and fly from this height. Any advice ? Thank you.
@BirdsWalkingDown Жыл бұрын
I don't think the height is a problem. Fledglings aren't good at flying but they can fly well enough
