An eruption started at 11.14pm on Wednesday evening (Nov 20, 2024), in the Sundhnúks craters. Benedikt Ófeigsson from the Met Office reports that the fissure is extending exclusively northeast, spanning just over two kilometers. The lava flow is primarily moving westward toward Grindavíkurvegur (the road).
"It appears this eruption is less intense compared to the previous one, with a significantly reduced lava flow," Benedikt noted, adding that Grindavíkurvegur is currently the only infrastructure potentially at risk in the near term, based on the present conditions.
The wind direction is also favorable for minimizing gas pollution, as northerly winds are carrying it out to sea.
