Ultimately, he decided on his own that without his party's support he wasn't going anywhere. So he backed off. You're welcome to use the word "coerced" if it makes you feel better. Another possibility, though remote, is that he actually understood it was better for both the party and the country that he made way for someone with a better chance of winning against Donnie boy. Meaning he actually put aside his own ambitions willingly. And if that's the case, an action taken willingly cannot be the result of backstabbing.
