Live repair, diagnosing a bad motherboard on a Dell Optiplex 3010

Thanks for the video. My Optiplex 3010 just died. I unplugged all the peripherals and devices - PCI cards, cd-rom, RAM, and hard drives and it still won't power on. It powers on if I hold down the self test power button on the back of the power supply, but the power will not stay on. Like you I'm guessing there is a fault component on the motherboard. It's likely a blown capacitor. Guys used to use multimeters and tools to test each capacitor and do board level repair but unless you are an electronics hobbyist/nerd it's definitely not worth the time. Once a component on the motherboard is bad; it's toast. Weird that it does power on with the self test button but does not stay powered on, but way more than I want to get involved with.

My 3010 crashed about a week ago.I replaced the power supply.But it does the samething as yours.I dont believe its the motherboard.I think its maybe the usb interface on the front thats bad,or the power switch cicuitry.This could keep it from booting up.

same problem, start optiplex 390, 3010, 3020. don't know how to fix it.

It’s probably a motherboard problem, can you test the power supply in another machine

Hey,I have a doubt, my optiplex 9010 had a problem with the motherboard. Can I buy a different one or does it have to be the same as the one that gave the problem

You can likely use the same case but it will be hard to find a motherboard that fits into the Dell case unless it's the same model. Dell are great pc's but they tend to be proprietary. You may also need to replace the power supply with one that is compatible with the motherboard you use as a replacement. Also if you want to use the same hard drive you need to use the same motherboard/cpu architecture or it will blue screen the o/s.
