The pipa I bought around 20 years ago is an antique and doesn’t have as many frets or finger positions , are they played differently or tuned differently or would it be the same , ?

Hi there! Thank you for the comment. It could be a Nanyin Pipa, a different variant of the Pipa family; or, it could just be an earlier incarnation of the instrument. Chinese Musical Instruments tend to undergo improvements over time, such as the addition of frets, muting pedals of Yangqin for example, and so much more! Eason Music the pipa I purchased 20 yrs ago came from lower Eastman China a lady who was a flight attendant brought it back along with an erhu and a moon guitar, I purchased them from her as she was getting elderly , I'm pretty sure that the pipa is vary old I don't know it's original age but just from its construction you can see it's from along time ago, the erhu and moon guitar I'm thinking therefrom the late 1930s to 1940 era , I bought them as wall hangers and still get in aha thinking of there construction and what they would have sounded like in the hands of a professional , they are just to cool !

If you dony have a tuner, then download a tuning app on playstore, and voila finished, also regarding the changing the strings, there are a couple of videos out there
