The flanges with the separate union in the middle follow full size practice, used in some of the pressure vessels I was involved with. They're called 'loose lap' flanges, though they would typically have a gasket - I guess it's easier to make a metal to metal seal with a smaller fitting. They also have other advantages though; it's easier for installation if you can rotate the flanges to align the bolt holes, and if you need some expensive exotic corrosion resistant material in contact with the piping contents, you can use a much smaller piece of it than if you had to make the whole flange from it.

Thank you for the very interesting information - I didn't know that - I don't do much with full size steam engines.

2:04 I don't want to be a smartarse, but if you know the surface total to connect, the height of the gap (which is negligible, say 0,01mm or 1/1000 inch) and the specific weight of the solder you know how much solder to weigh so you get just enough without leaking blobs. At least in theory. Or was your question a hypothetical one? Love your video's, very thorough explanations and humour. Thank you!

In a past life I used to drive a Wallis & Stevens compound engine - set to blow at 170 - the number of ways to get water into the boiler were limited - water lifter, high pressure injector or mechanical pump, the low pressure injector was iffy to say the least. The high pressure vertical injector was as reliable as hell, water on, couple of cracks of the steam valve, soon had her singing.

Lime scale can be cleared by soaking the parts in a strong solution of warm water and lemon juice (citric acid).

That is very lovely silver soldering. I have never had much luck with injectors I just don't hold my mouth right.

The quality of the silver solder on those injectors, reminds me of aerospace quality, where silver soldering was actually furnace brazing, sometimes under vacuum. Basically the parts are positioned on fixturing, and silver solder/flux preforms are placed at the joints. The items are placed in an oven, temperature rises... preforms flow... temperature decreases. I wonder if this was the process?

Definitely not, These are made in a modest garage workshop on pieces of fire brick and a using a standard Propane Blowtorch . . . . it is down to the skill of the makers (Jubilee Fittings) in this case.

Keith Appleton where can I find more information about jubilee fittings. I don’t see the injectors in the blackgates catalog

Those silver soldered assemblies really are beautiful. Does he get that surface finish by sandblasting them?

Yes.

My 7 1/4 loco has one of the horizontal injectors similar in size to the red on that you have, aside from it scaling up every so often I don't have any issues with it. With careful fiddling it picks up and feeds right down to 15-20psi (with some dribbling and hesitation) and works all the way up to the 100psi working pressure of the engine. I'd be quite tempted to buy one of the jubilee fittings injectors as they look much better and more scale accurate but I'd be interested to know if they have the same kind of working range that my current injector has.

Yes, as I show in the video the Jubilee injectors often work down to 15psi.

The red injectors that you mention are usually "Jubilee Fittings" injectors too . . . . .

I'm not sure what brand it came from as the engine was originally built in 1991. If it is most likely a jubilee one then I might look into buying one of the more scale looking ones to replace it.

I was wondering if you had plans for that pump, given the very special origin! That makes me smile, the boiler plant will be amazing!
