Yup, it is quite possible I’m more fluent in some programming languages than in English. But I do look at references fairly often. For example, I totally can’t remember the order that some functions expect their parameters like std::equals, std::copy, std::copy_n, std::fill, std::fill_n, std::string::insert, std::string::compare, and so on, so I have to look them up pretty much every time.

Aannnd that’s what I was afraid of. The vultures. The copyright mafia. bisqwit.iki.fi/kala/snap/copynotice_livestream3.png I thought that MOD files would be unlikely to cause problems, but unlikely ≠ impossible.

Oh forget to put more than 3 seconds of any music on youtube. I had a video of me dancing with a girl recorded (very badly) from ambient sound and I got the copyright claim and the video got _demon_etized. On another video of a program I made (whitout music) I got copyright claim too. I think you can easily get bullied by haters if they denounce you in masse.

@Bisqwit
@Bisqwit 8 жыл бұрын
Luckily these claims are not penalizing my channel. It just means that should I enable ads on this video, I would receive a smaller cut of the money than I would otherwise do (and in some cases, I would not receive anything). Note that _these_ particular Content-ID claims are not for performances; they are for _compositions_. And at least the November Rain claim is very much correct in that regard (although I find it dubious that so many megaconglomerates would share the rights to that composition, but I digress). I have found that the names of the songs in Content-ID claims are very rarely accurate. Often they are outright dubious and made-up, such as calling the Duck Tales Moon theme “Don’t Run Me Down” (screenshot: bisqwit.iki.fi/kala/snap/copynotice_moontheme.png). Nevertheless, in my experience this category of Content-ID claims can not be disputed very successfully. I did dispute the claim in my Tandy 1000 programming video, and my dispute was rejected without any explanation.

@Bisqwit
@Bisqwit 8 жыл бұрын
I actually don't listen to much music at all, except if I want to drown some background noise. I put music in my videos for production quality reasons. It helps fill the blanks when I have nothing to say. Even in videos where I speak all the time, it helps bring a certain quality to the video. But when I do listen to music, it's nearly always video-game music.

Hi Bisqwit, Greetings from the United Kingdom ! I would like to ask you three questions which I hope will have an answer from you. 1) How good are you at HTML, Cascading Style Sheets, PHP and JavaScript? If the answer is mostly positive, do you think you have the ability to create an e-commerce website? (I really assume you know everything already) 2) I also assume that you never stopped learning. To keep it up with the technology you learnt a lot of codes. What's your favourite method of learning? The books behind you or the Internet? 3) Hopefully you have big dreams, especially because you have skills other people do not posses. If you were to be asked to work for a project that would have a huge potential, how likely are you to do that? Thank you! God bless you and good luck in everything you're doing
@Bisqwit
@Bisqwit 7 жыл бұрын
Hello Cristian WS! 1) I have worked in the intelligent website business for over ten years, so I am fairly competent at the core of those technologies. But if I were to create an e-commerce website, it would be quite outdated by design and would probably measure low in terms of usability. 2) Internet. I code a lot, and read a lot of code. When I need to know how something works, or perhaps just want to know, I look for it and study it. 3) It all bears down to time. As long as my needs of income are met, I prioritize by stress level and by technological interestingness, not by market potential.

@Bisqwit
@Bisqwit 8 жыл бұрын
Pointer-casting and modifying of consts may invoke undefined behavior though. If you are declaring something const, you are giving the compiler the liberty of optimizing the program with the assumption that this value can not change in the context it is declared.

@je3f0o74 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I know. I'm just saying that way I like to think about. It is so much easier to me :P I have a question. What do you think about Javascript programming language? Javascript is like a Universal language now days. Human love to write and read Javascript. My most favorite programming languages are C++ and Javascript. I love C++ and OpenGL so much, but I'm spending 99% of my time with Javascript. Because of my job. Clients always complain something and updates never ending... Everytime I need to create some new tools javascript pops in my mind :P I want to know what do you think about javascript ?
@Bisqwit
@Bisqwit 8 жыл бұрын
I like JavaScript. I don't personally use it that much, and in fact my knowledge of the language is somewhat outdated: Much of what was introduced in ES6, or even ES5, is unfamiliar to me. But I think it is a nice language that can be used for many practical purposes way beyond simple web scripting. I like it.
@je3f0o74
@je3f0o74 8 жыл бұрын
Cool, :) It is really way beyond web scripting as you said. In fact it is not scripting language. It is real programming language. The World's Most Misunderstood Programming Language is Javascript. Because of the 2 words Java, Script. I saw Javascript syntax highlighting text editor written in Javascript itself. That was woaw to me :P Many companies, many big business projects trying to do javascript code compiling into other languages. One simple javascript code for native IOS, Android, Blackberry... application. Some Parser and Compiler is written in javascript too. I created some mini languages for my own purpose using javascript too. That is why I said Javascript is Universal language now days. So anyway thank you again. I just want let you know you are my hero ;-)

Regarding the comic in the beginning, I have my own definition of a software developer. So software developer is a person, who when faced with a task, which should take 3 minutes to complete, will spend 3 days to write a piece of software, which will perform that task in 3 seconds.

I use a lot of pipes for virtual video devices with v4l2 and Linux device nodes. My class requires us to switch on the webcam, I get a bit annoyed with asking permission from my teacher to do my business in my own home so I have a background process of FFmpeg reading and looping 10-second prerecorded video captured by the current webcam in use and piping the output Linux device node to my virtual webcam. It's been months since I did this, I should've taken more notes. Now I'm trying to figure out how to do the same thing on my osx machine, but I can't find an alternative to v4l2 since it's not the same kernel architecture for video as osx (or similar I really don't know). The thing is I don't really know how to make a virtual loopback device on osx similar to v4l2 (need more time to read on osx kernel extensions). I got a lot to learn.

The problem is the unreasonably large number of backends it would have to support to be worthwhile. In Linux alone, there would OpenGL, XV, X11, fbcon, and DirectFB and possibly V4L2. Also, the 80/20 rule: 80% of functionality (that works right 80% of time) takes 20% oftime to create, 20% of functionality takes 80% of time to create. You could create a tiny library that supports nothing but pixel framebuffer transfers for one platform in a relatively small time. There's hardly a lesson in that. To make it efficient and more useful is an enterprise.

Many programmers do not develop their own programs, but instead, work on dissecting snippets of code. They have powers of analysis, but little creative spirit. I think Bisqwit is the rarer type, with programming strengths at both ends of the spectrum.
@ade8890
@ade8890 5 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a crock of shit. In an industry environment, yes, you will be working in a massive code base and only deal with snippets of code. And I don't see how programmers don't have a creative spirit either. Programmers maintain their own codebases and side projects all of the time... What sets bisqwit a part is not that he writes his own programs (most programmers have, it's just not something you tend to do when working for a company, unless you work at some small company where you had to do the role as a software architect, or had the role of starting up a new product/service). He's just really damn good at what he does.

There is a lack of mid-level jobs out there, including basic coding at the 2nd-3rd year college level. If you know just C++ (mid-level language) and SQL you are not going to get a job - but that doesn't mean you don't deserve one. Most programming jobs are far too selective on there hiring criteria, with arbitrary qualifications, and far too many high level programming languages (Javascript,HTML,Ruby,Python), and psuedo-coders; people who can work on snippets of code, but fail to integrate their skills to develop whole programs or useful algorthims/functions. But nowadays, you can only hope to get your foot in the door if you have the pseudo programming abilities (Ruby/Python javascript) at some arbitrary point in time. As for Bisqwit, there is no question he deserves a job. I would be surprised if people have not reached out to him for employment.

Hey +Bisqwit, Might look like a stupid question but what Linux distro do you recommend for programming? Just started learning python so I am a complete beginner. And also If you could answer me this question: does a programmer needs powerful hardware? Already searched in Internet and couldnt find something useful or recent.
@Bisqwit
@Bisqwit 8 жыл бұрын
Well for most purposes the question of Linux distribution only matters when you need to install and remove applications. That's when the distribution may either make things easy or difficult for you. Any other time it's totally irrelevant which distribution you are having. Personally I prefer Debian distributions. As for whether you need powerful hardware, that really depends what kind of things you program. Personally I do computation-intensive tasks every now and then (such as optimization, compression, large data management), so I like to have a fast CPU and preferably many of them, and a lot of RAM. In most of my programming, a 15 years old computer does just fine. For a beginner I would say you don't need powerful hardware. In fact, having _less_ powerful hardware is actually good, because it helps gaining an intuition on what kind of things are efficient and what are likely to become bottlenecks.

You don't need brackets if the loop contains exactly one statement. A switch-statement, a for-loop, an if-statement, a while-loop, and a bracketed list of statements all count as one statement each even if they nest multiple statements.

I put one video up once, and got 6 infringement claims. Unfortunately, I only used classical music which is public domain. Generally clicking the dispute link for all infringement claims results in being left alone. Secondly, I know people ask for C++ beginner tutorials, but how about a Joe tutorial? All of the Joe videos on youtube are garbage, and most people have no idea how Joe works (thanks to prevolence of Vi, nano, and emacs).

^K^H gets a long way (it's written in the top-right corner of the screen when you start Joe: "Ctrl-K H for help"). It lists the keyboard shortcuts. Esc period for next page, and then next and next. There is no shortcut to memorizing them; a video certainly would not make it more efficient.
