Thank you Mr Singh for your wise words. As artists we can fall into the habit of working to meet the expectations of others rather than just enjoying the process and expressing ourselves.

You make a lot of sense. That internal fear of my paintings being judged has stopped me from painting many days. At my age, I don’t have enough days left to waste time. I will listen to this video many times. Thank you!

Sir, you are speaking for the painting as a form of a meditation. In some cultures it is accepted as a prayer. As I've understood from your words, painting requires pure mind. Totally true. Personally, I'm struggling with the "light and shadow" difficulties and what to choose as a focal point of a composition and how to make the other part less detailed but at the same time to avoid painting it just like a colorful spot.

I like your way of putting paint to paper without over thinking. I'm so much of a copycat when I use a reference photo . I find it hard to concentrate on a simplified version. I tend to get stressed by too many possibilities. Can you advise me please?
@rossmcleod7983

Throw away your photos. I copy 18 th century watercolours and then use that way of seeing and painting in my work. The camera has been a pernicious beast in realism, we have become its diary and it has to be ignored.

Great lesson although I don’t think philosophy will make me paint better, just putting the time will. Anyway I love your lessons, I have a question though, why is it better to use a mix of ultramarine and burnt sienna for the dark trunks instead of black? I see good watercolor painters almost never use black, why is it?

Interesting, but the technique on the right is different than the one on the left. If one knows/knew how to paint a tree the way you did on the right, whether to please self or others, they would never paint the way the left side tree was painted, lol! By trying to please only yourself will not instantly give you “watercolor superpowers”! There are techniques and brush control skills beginners simply don’t know/have YET, but that will come with daily practice. I am just not sure you can go from left tree to right tree simply by “not trying to please others”. Great advice though, regardless!
@onnevankenobe
@onnevankenobe 2 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the exact same thing. I get what he says, he is a very philosophical painter, maybe because he’s Indian, he has this “guru” approach, but attitude isn’t going to paint for you. I lost the count of the times I was painting for myself and for the pleasure of painting just to end up with a brown and grey puddle. A more practical advice from me would be “don’t be harsh on yourself as it is very unproductive and put thousands of hours, there’s no way around that. You have to put the time, a good attitude just helps.
