I was diagnosed with hip OA and all the orthopedic surgeons I consulted earlier this year told me to have a hip replacement. I didn't want surgery but was afraid if my hip would get worse and my other joints would get affected negatively without it. I began looking for alternative opinions on how to treat hip OA without surgery from many sources including the videos on this channel. I tried to change my diet and follow the exercises and within less than two months I could feel improvement in mobility, strength and pain -- since the beginning I tried to stay away from any pain killer. Glad I didn't have the surgery and hope my hip will continue to heal. Thanks so much for the priceless information Doc. This video has convinced once again that surgery is not the only way to deal with hip OA.

I don't know if I sent a comment to you before. I've been all over KZbin... I'm a 72 year old woman and in excellent health. I bike (8 miles/30 minutes)around my community, 25 miles on country bike trails in an hour and a half, hike forest preserves 3 miles in an hour, swim 60 - 25 meter lengths in under an hour. Lift weights 3-4 times a week. Cook from scratch, organic locally grown. I was thrown from a horse when I was 13 and landed on my right hip. Decades of pain issues, physical therapy, chiropractic, you name it. I was physically active as a kid as well. I just stopped in line skating a couple of years ago. I fell when I hit a grass filled crack in the pavement.... Windmilled my arms and broke my fall with my hands ( yes I wear complete pads and helmet). Scared me since I'm elderly 😊 and I've never broken any bones in all my years of exercising. I had pt and dry needling 4 times last month but my hip still "unhinges" and it feels like what I imagine a cattle prod feels like. I'm supposed to be scheduled for hip replacement surgery in 3 months BUT I found you. Now I'm reconsidering. I stopped riding my bike and hiking for a month and I use the pull buoy (foam peanut) between my legs while swimming. The pain has become an occasional ache, my range of motion is back ( knee to chest) I still get a warning twinge after exercise. Phew! Sorry! I know this is lengthy. So. Now I don't know if I "should" have surgery. Oh: diagnosed with torn labrum, osteoarthritis, bone spurs on the ball. I just started your exercise routine: fidget, glute squeezing, bent knee etc.

I literally have all these! Got diagnosed with severe osteoarthritis back in the fall of 2020. Started with conservative approach. Did a PRP injection to see if that would help. It didn't. Was provided with an amazing off-loader brace and that helped with my pain. Eventually tried Cortisone. Did 2 of those. Provided temporary relief, but it just wasn't enough. I'm only 39 so my doc didn't want to go straight to surgery. But it's progressed DRAMATICALLY over the last 18 months. It's insane. I have a 3° internal rotation. So basically nothing. It's constant pain. I'm over it. I want my life back. I'm a fitness professional and love being active. I can't do it anymore. I dread even getting up to walk to the trash can these days. I get less than 5,000 steps/day cuz I just can't do it. I've gained weight and I'm just done! I am scheduled for THR (anterior). I'm absolutely terrified and am dreading that recovery process but I'm so ready!

@@QMW11 Do let me know how you get on. Are you having a spinal block and staying awake, are you having the anterior incision ? I'm sorry you are so young I'm 68 but like 40 in my head :) I have no trouble getting around but this flare up is painful when I do certain moves. I practice Qigong which is great and I changed my diet which also helped, no gluten, no lactose, no Sugar plus I take quite a few supplements. I think as I have been present during this procedure as a nurse I visualise every move ! Wishing you a fast recovery and you better start shining your dancing shoes :)

@cinders I believe I'm having spinal with sedation. Seems to be the preferred method with this so that you can get up and moving quickly post-op. Totally freaks me out thinking I won't be totally under. But I believe it's twilight medication, so I shouldn't remember anything. I'm having anterior approach. I'm pretty freaked out but at this point I can barely walk, so what's my alternative? I can't live like this anymore

I returned to teaching part time after being retired for a year & my hip pain returned. I was doing great especially after starting HRT. I had been doing glute strengthening exercises after watching your videos & then I stopped prioritizing them. I am going to get back to it starting today! This just reminded me of my open bite issue. The dentist wanted me to have surgery, but I learned that many people relapse because they don’t fix the tongue thrust issue which is an underlying cause. I am so grateful for your videos. I have an appointment in a month with an orthopedic doctor, but I am going to strengthen my glutes & hopefully I improve. By the way, I improved my bite with myofacial therapy & never had jaw surgery. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

I fell in 2022 and really damaged my right hip. It seems I already had hip arthritis and didn't know it. This year I decided to go to the gym and build the muscles around my hip and my right hip has been feeling better. Now on top of that I have been doing the exercises for hip arthritis for two days now and I get up without hip pain. The pain at night has almost gone away! I feel so much better! Thank you Dr. David very much for introducing these exercises and your knowledge on KZbin. I don't want a hip replacement and they say I need one.

@@epmanualphysicaltherapy I realize now that it started with a fused spine then IT band syndrome (because my knee was hurting and I had a spot just off to the side of the front pocket and was hurting quite often), hip tendonitis (the hip flexor right in the front) and now hip arthritis. The frustrating and sad part about all of this is years ago no one knew anything about musculoskeletal issues. I think it would have been viewed as eastern medicine. It is too late now for me to prevent any of the wear and tear to my body however with the exercises for hip arthritis I may be able to avoid a hip replacement surgery or at least postpone it yet for years to come. I've already had a major surgery on my spine (twice) so I don't want another major surgery of any kind at all. Thanks for your help and as I've stated, my hip is feeling better already.

I as a 52 year old right hip arthritic having been officially diagnosed I think about a year and a half ago was successfully discharged from PT a few months ago with the goal of no hip replacement. You have added to my knowledge base regarding the butt muscles which I never heard PT or my orthopedic doc mention!! I mentioned this here before, I had severe pain in my groin from oa in my right hip, and a bad limp. I was diagnosed with oa in 2000. A rheumatologist asked me if I wanted a referral to a surgeon for a hip replacement. I said that I had just started to take glucosamine and wanted to wait to see if it would help me. Within a week, my groin pain and limp were gone and I was fine for 15 years. At that time, I started to feel a little discomfort and realized that the glucosamine was not working as well. By 2018, I was back to severe groin pain and a bad limp. I could hardly walk. But, I didn't get a hip replacement. I got a hip resurfacing, a surgical procedure which saves the hip and immediately restores it to full mobility and strength. A year later, I was back to playing basketball and have had no problem with my hip since the surgery. An NBA player had oa in his hip and had the same surgery with my surgeon. He is back to playing professional basketball again. So, hip resurfacing is a great alternative to hip replacement. It's much to be preferred. I would try glucosamine for oa of the knee too. The longer you can avoid a knee replacement the better the chance that there will be a breakthrough in cartilage regeneration.

Hey Alan! Sorry to hear about your knee oa and hip pain :-( Yes hip resurfacing is less invasive than a replacement and might be a better option for some people. We're glad that you had a great outcome! It's still important to address the root muscle imbalance that set up the first hip and knee problem so that there isn't a next surgery.

@Rottimail
@Rottimail Жыл бұрын
@Jane Johnson I don't know the full details but it has something to do with the angle of the femur (leg bone) into or from the hip socket. Women's hips are wider whereas men's are narrow so much so that the femur (leg bone) runs straight down from hip, to knees, to ankles and then to feet. The more angled femur in women is the problem. The hip clinic didn't go into it.

I have bone spurs. I didn't hear that mentioned. I have been told moderate to severe arthritis with bone spurs in my left hip. Eight days ago after trying to rest it after really pushing it from September 7-13 very hard for days as my husband had overall perfusion test on Aug 30th then on September 6 had preoperative for heart cath then they had us stay at a hotel for heart catherization the next morning. It showed unexpected results. Within the hour he was transferred to MISSION Memorial to their Heart Tower with possible surgery that day. I walked futher and faster than I had in years for 9 days. I was also having to push it at home to take care of my hubby when on the 27th of September I was sitting and my Rottweiler caught the inside of my left leg and spread the leg outward fast as my chair went around some too. The pain now grabs me and jerks me forward if I sit in a seat with no cushion much as I stand it stops me as I try to straighten up jerking me back down about 6 plus inches and pain goes from my left groin straight through and out near SI joint in buttock. Feels sharp like a knife and have to wiggle to get that to release and afraid to move and don't want my back jerked either. What do you do for this?

1st I’d like to say, I really enjoy listening and learning from the good Doctor/Therapist. I have 3 out of 5. I can stand on my feet all day. My trouble is when I’m coming out of the sitting position. My left quad can tighten up and I can hobble off but I wait for it to unlock and I can walk without pain. I’m trying the exercises, had PT and hoping not to have surgery. Fortunately I can rest in my recliner or lay in bed without any discomfort. All the best to everyone.

I’ve doubled my cycling distance to try and relieve the osteoarthritis pain in my right hip. The surgeon who looked at my X-rays is an avid cyclist and he said to keep cycling. I really don’t want surgery. I was supposed to get knee surgery years ago but by the time the follow up consultation came I was pain-free because I’d been strengthening the muscles, and I was now hiking up mountains in the Yukon. I’m hoping exercises and cycling will do the same for my hip. My younger brother has both knees replaced, my mom has them replaced twice plus two hip replacements and a shoulder replacement, and my sister (11 yrs younger) is being crippled by arthritis (bone graft to a knee, fused ankle, backbone issues, hands and wrists hurting). I’m now the oldest family member that hasn’t had major surgery (or any surgery for that matter) and I really hope I can keep it that way for another two decades (then statistically I’ll be dead so … yay?). :)

Hey Gary! We are so sorry to hear that you've had both knees replaced, we can only imagine how difficult and challenging the recovery process has been and the emotional toll it has taken on you. We are glad that you've come across our KZbin channel and hopeful that we can help you avoid any unnecessary surgeries, injections, or medications. Here are some resources that you might find beneficial for both your knee and hip conditions: The "Failed Knee Replacement Recovery Program" is a comprehensive program designed to help people with treatment strategies that are effective at calming down an irritated knee, then guiding you to treat the root problem that sets up knee arthritis and continues to cause knee pain in a replaced knee joint. This program works even for a revised knee replacement. You can learn more here: www.epmanualphysicaltherapy.com/failed-knee-replacement-recovery/ “Hip Arthritis Help” kzbin.info/aero/PLJVIPiFvv1mbICbP6qlXUZwMyAJlKD1dt We hope to hear about your progress in the future! 🙌

I have been having a SORE right hip for some months and recently it has interfered with sleep even though I started sleeping on the left. I used this channel to do the glute exercises 2 days ago and I was miraculously cured. With computers we don't try 2 cures at once, as if we are successful, we don't know what the problem was. Unfortunately, I started ibuprofen 2 days ago, so was it the exercises or was it the ibu ? I have full movement with knees up to my chest and I can walk in the woods now with no pain and I am sleeping fine for 2 nights. Have I perhaps got rid of an 'adhesion' through the exercises ? I am 75, not overweight, and at the computer 8 hours every day.. An Englander who has washed up in Wiscaaaarnsin. PS THANK YOU !

Thank you for these simple first exercises. In February 2021 was told by physiatrist X-rays I have arthritis on upper socket. He suggest seeing surgeon. I’ve been using a cane ..walked 200-300 ‘ .in August 2021 .surgeon said surgery ! I asked to try pt and got a shot ..did nothing ..After PT 4 x’s felt better after 10 sessions , they worked me too hard and hurt worse .. I’m still taking 4 Aleves daily ..2 yrs and intermittently a Tylenol. Did some of your easy ones , but as a clue for you I can only pull knee to chest at 30 degrees. Should I just do surgery and Stat Living my Life again at 65 . I appreciate your input . ❤️❤️❤️

thank you for this video. it's the lost nights of sleep that you mentioned that i teared up over. yes. PTSD for me. i've had an anterior THR and it was the very best thing. been waiting for the other "hip to drop" so to speak and i think it has, almost 7 years later. the loss of sleep has plagued for me several weeks now, and hearing you talk about it made me cry. been treating the inflammation as you have suggested but i'd also like to add that you should get off inflammatory foods too!! Corn is a trigger for me, wheat, sugar, soy and processed foods will add to inflammation and increased pain. you bet i'm off of those (even alcohol) during this flare up

I've been experiencing right hip pain & occasional acute giving way ( buckling) sensation & weakness for several years which has got more acutely painful the last 6 months. My pelvis is mostly tilted ( high on right) & rotated & I have this corrected by a chiropractor. I've been couched ( on & off for years) in Egoscue exercises to create symmetry & strength; but the pain has increased, my right knee is becoming painfu,l & a hip x-ray has just shower severe osteoarthritis 😢 I'm feeling very despondent & confused after all the expense & work which has failed to prevent deterioration of my hip. I still have reasonable movement but am limping a lot & finding gardening very painful now. I'm wondering if some of the exercises to stabilise my pelvis, such as standing thigh stretches, have made the pressure in my hip joint worse ? I dread needing a hip replacement!

Hello from Australia, I have been told that I need a hip replacement, I have had x ray which shows significant oa. Had ultrasound which showed fluid in front of groin and bursitis in hip, had prednisone tabs then prednisone injected by ultrasound which did nothing to relieve the pain, Have seen surgeon and I have taken out private health insurance and will have to wait one year for operation. My problem is that I can’t weight bare and have been walking with the aid of one crutch. My knee on the opposite leg is now causing significant pain and discomfort obviously from the silly walking. I have tried most of your hip exercises but all have caused discomfort. I can’t take anti inflammatory drugs as I had an anaphylactic reaction to them 10 years ago, can you recommend any knee exercise that will protect it from damage.

Hi Mishka, That is so nice of you to say. If you are ever around these neck of the woods please visit us! Just in case you are interested we have a playlist for hip arthritis you might find helpful. You can access it here: “Hip Arthritis Help” kzbin.info/aero/PLJVIPiFvv1mbICbP6qlXUZwMyAJlKD1dt Start with one or two exercises, beginning with the smallest range of motion and the lowest intensity. As you feel stronger, you can gradually increase both the range of motion and intensity. It’s best to do these exercises every day throughout the day. Aim to tire out the muscle without losing form or control. Consistency is key. Always avoid working through pain; soreness and mild discomfort are normal, but pain is not. We hope you found this information helpful to you. We'd love to hear how you are doing as you progress.🙌 Please take care!

I was diagnosed with severe hip OA on the right side and moderate on the left side. Working with a manual therapist in PA and told my problem is tight muscles. I have right side glute pain when driving and was told foam rolling glutes and quads is the solution. Do you agree? Have been foam rolling for about two months and still have the glute pain when driving. I get relief by stopping and walking around. How many months of foam rolling until I can drive pain free? You are an outstanding professional with amazing communication skills. Thank you so much for what you do!
