Nestled among the beautiful rolling Shropshire hills, just eight miles from the Welsh border, archaeologists from DigVentures are investigating an impressive Scheduled Ancient Monument on the grounds of Soulton Hall.
A large, rectangular mound and surrounding moat has captivated the team for five seasons of excavations. For many years, its purpose and function have been a mystery, but now the evidence is pointing to an answer.

in Handsacre (nr Rugeley in staffordshire) there was a a old derelict moated timber hall that was destroyed in 60s and 70s.The moat still exists but my point is that the ground remains and looks very similar and the internal space between looks about the same size. it may be worth comparing the sites. best of all theres written history and pictures of it before it fell into ruin. im no expert but it looks like you have a moated timber house to me not a fort. but you compare them and see what you think. it may of been the old Soulton Hall ?

also not far from me theres a place called Elmore park ( Rugeley ) in the park theres what seems to be a moat that was widened? and indeed it was orignally the old Hagley hall est 1392,(demolished). but they built a newer hall est 1636 (demolished in the 90s) on the hill with in sight of the old one that evetually became a park. is it the same thing of kind you have there.???? as this did happen a lot especialy with new riches being made. its also well documented for comparison
