RAF Lakenheath is the home of the 48th Fighter Wing and home to four combat ready fighter squadrons; 492d FS, 493rd FS, 494th FS and the recently reactivated 'Valkyries', the 495th Fighter Squadron. It may carry the title RAF but it is a USAF base. This is because the base was originally built for and operated by the Royal Air Force in 1940. The airfield started life out as decoy airfield (Q-site) to RAF Mildenhall, which is about 5.5 miles the way the backwards crow flies. RAF Mildenhall was an established bomber station built in 1934 and to protect it, Lakenheath was chosen to become a decoy, to take any attacks. However, things changes and it was decided that RAF Lakenheath would become a satellite station to Mildenhall.
Lakenheath was home to 20 OTU with Wellington Bombers, 149 Squadron with their Short Sterling Bombers who were also joined later by 199 Squadron. After WWII, and from 1948, it then became home to the USAF's 307th Bombardment Group and also the 2d Bombardment Group.
On the 15th January 1941, the US Army Air Corps activated the 48th Bombardment Group (Light). During WW2, the 492d, 493d and 494th Fighters Squadrons were trained and were significantly involved in the Normandy Landings, Operation Overlord and the Invasion of France. Their combat sorties involved bombings raids over bridges, railway lines and carried out reconnaissance missions. It was on the 10th July 1952, the Oklahoma Air National Guard 137th Fighter-Bomber Wing at Chaumont-Semoutiers Air Base, France was redesignated as the 48th Fighter-Bomber Wing.
The Statue of Liberty was actually made near the base and the Mayor of the town gave a ceremonial name to the base as the "Statue of Liberty Wing". The 48th Fighter Wing is the only Wing in the USAF to have a number and a name!
It wasn't until 15th January 1960 that the 48th Tactical Fighter Wing made Lakenehath their new home. LR, LS and LT were the tail codes for the base with the F-100's but when they transitioned to the Phantom, a temporary tail code of LK was introduced until a few months later it changed once more to LN, which is active today.
In 1977 a fourth squadron joined Lakenheath's 48th, the 495th Tactical Fighter Squadron. They were known as the "Thundervarks" flying the F-111's. However, they deactivated in 1991. They also sported the green tail flash.
In 1991, The 48th Tactical Fighter Wing was redesignated as the 48th Fighter Wing. This included the 'Tactical' title being dropped on the squadrons too. The 495th disbanded with the retirement of the F-111 in that year but returned 30 years later in 2021 with the F-35A.

The end of of the week is always something special especially when its TQCF at RAF Lakenheath. Not only have the F-15's and F-35's been busy but so have the bears first up for a visit we had Ginger who came in for a visit, then Ted was very busy with guards marches and doing his bit to keep everyone happy waving the American flag and waving at the cars and lorries. We also, saw white bunny, KC, Drew, Wingy, Red Ted and Reggie. Red Ted nicked Wingy's chip bag and ran off with Wingy running after him. Red Ted was later seen with Wingy chip bag on his head looked quite fetching. We also had a C17, 767 in and out plus we heard a donkey well I never what an exciting day. Must not forget the history lesson from Nikos about the base. I must arrange to go and see the Lakenheath Man at Mildenhall Museum. Thanks Nikos and Ted for an amazing day

Oii oiii Debbie. Ooohhh yeah, the one and only place for anyone’s prelude to a their weekend. It is for us a great way to end our week with our QCF show. The bears do get excited towards the end of the week too. The quick climbs were fantastic as always oooohhh yeah

Another magical day at the 48th Fighter Wings home at Lakenheath. One well worth catching up on. From 25:00 onwards the action came thick and fast with those wild slippery Salmons we love, the F35A. Massing on the pads before giving us monster climbs, unreal turnouts and lower than the ILS style low approaches. Serious Spluffage content throughout. The quick climbs trully a spectacular thing too watch on a gorgeous day. For added bonuses today was a tremendous sounding 767 taxi then take off @111 plus dB, what a sound that was. Plus later that MD11 too giving a show. The variety today was amazing. From 2:01:40 some hugh low approaches. 2:07:40 F15 x4 on quick climbs then 2 x F35 @ 2:09:50. Midway through we witness one F15 with issues, landing using the arrestor cable safely and slick as! That's when the training clicks in. Never a drama, just another day at the office, like a paper jam just alot faster... That super cool C17 landing, as hugh as it is, made tolook easy. Top pilots. I think they look great when taxiing around a base designed for fighter jets. Dwarf everything in site. Once again education figures high on the agenda explaining F35 variants plus base rules for aviation enthusiasts. To top it off Red Ted Being Red Ted and taking Wingy's chip bag, Reggie lunge, Groundcrew Drew with KC, a bro-mance forming there. Great fun watching F35s climb so steep into the Suffolk skies and shouting about it. Train long, train hard, train fast. Got another stream to get through as on catch up. So long till later. One of those days where work got in the way sadly, but so glad I can catch up now I'm home. Some superb F35 quick climbs, a 767 departure, F15s (including another safely handled emergency landing), an MD11 departure and a C17 arrival and departure! Busy day at Lakenheath...
