I wouldn't mind a medal from Brian May too! Love Queen. p.s. I used to work at Granada Studios, 1992 (and appeared with my band on Yorkshire TV's Calendar in 1989, where I was given a proper tour)... In a tv studio/newsroom you tend to get individual battery-powered lavaliers, and I've seen both pencil condensors/boundary mics used on the desk. And they rooms are so dead that phase barely enters the equation. Boom mics rarely used in the 'newsroom' - you'd be surprised how small the news studios actually were - hardly any standing room for an Operator.

OK, here's the one we need. A lot of pedals have come out before this, and that is a mistake. It's about noise. There are gates, but that leaves the noise sound mixed with the guitar sound after you push past the threshold. We can do better than that - we can have all the instrument and NONE of the noise. We need sampling noise reduction (like Waves X-Noise). If it was a very simple pedal, you would have to leave your guitar volume on 10 and use a volume pedal after the noise reduction (or you could use the strange sound of too much noise reduction as an effect if you use the vol. on the guitar - it's a useable sound, though I never have). The reason is that the sampler is taking out the specific noise that exists with the instrument set at a specific volume. It would only need one button, "activate" which would sample the noise and turn it on. Automatic sampling would be unreliable (it sounds like someone goofing with the eq while a person is on a video chat - we know that sound right? - for a guitarist, that would result in the other band members looking over and wondering what happened). Another thought is that it could be incorporated into the instrument so that the noise reduction would stay with the volume control (buy stock in 9-vold batteries?) So, guitar with everything on 10 (with your hand over the strings) -> click sampling noise reduction -> volume pedal -> the rest of your rig. This would get you chillingly clean, no-noise-floor single coil sound. It's more important now with the resurgence of high-end performers using P-90s. If we can get a pedal like that, everyone will sound better. PS - I love that sunburst strat missing the back-plate, haha, that's most of mine. About the time I think "yea it's stable now" and take the zip-lock baggie out of the parts box an put it back on, the weather changes or I decide to try a different set of strings. Anyway... your mission, should you choose to accept it... this message will not self-destruct, but will probably stay here until there's a big solar flare. Then we'll all be playing acoustics. I hope someone puts a Blues-breaker in a Faraday cage...

To the person who's researching frequency response in different guitar builds: I would really pay close attention to bridge design. It's *incredible* how thoroughly a Strat trem vs. a 2-piece Tune-o-Matic vs. a one-piece wraptail can change a guitar. (And also mass in the neck, like Bill Collings said.)

@1:55:00 One good way to get post-amp effects is using the effects loop on the Fryette Powerstation PS-2A. The effects loop comes after the power amp instead of between preamp and poweramp.I have found I much prefer it for my reverbs and delays. It makes reverb sound much more like a real room and is similar to the production-type effects that happen when recording... very cool!

It's funny the colour of wood. I got a recent Squire with Pau Ferro and it has one of the darkest boards I've ever seen, it's not stained or anything, I've cleaned it like crazy, it's just a really dark piece. I've also got an old Brazilian board on an acoustic that has a light caramel swirl in it. You can find all kinds.

The physical separation of a panel of spokespersons is a function of the distance they are from "their" microphones. When they are directly in front of and close to them they may be placed closer shoulder to shoulder. When the microphones are above (out of view) the mouths must be separated farther from each other. This approach allows the volumes for each to be adjusted for their projection qualities and no real time volume adjustments are necessary. To do so would be a nightmarish distraction for the viewers (listeners) as well as an impossible chore for the tech crew.

One of the players referred to by Thorpie about getting their manfuzz stuck in the springs is none other than Neil Finn, during the recording of Together Alone, as told by the producer of the album, Youth. I prefer having , as a base level, speakers with the flattest response curve available. This allows for a wider range of tweaking through other components - one of which may be the addition of less "flat" speakers and perhaps even in a mix of cabinets.
@stevenheinje1812 жыл бұрын
The 1-variable thing is for teaching the scientific method: we often do not test one variable at a time, we can use a statistical technique called Fractional Factorials. I often test more than 4 at once because my product, paint, like guitar has many interactions among the components. A tool called multiple regression allows us to say Factor 1: is say 80%, then factor 3 is 10% and maybe 2 and 4 didn’t really matter - not statistically significant. Now maybe with repeats we find we can prove 4 and 3 did matter. Sort of like neck wood and glue joints. So its possible if we did a FF we’d see these anecdotes are all true, but that the smaller variables, like neck wood, may matter overall but maybe not on all models/makes and specimens. I think the main thing that TPS has offered me as a scientist who plays guitar is my interaction with the instrument matters: that might be physical or psychological but real none-the-less. That means to really do science you’d need various players to capture that. Often the cost of such science exceed the value of the problem. In this case we still rely on Expert Opinion. We generally accept that the experts mind find real relationships that in fact haven’t been proven. I think the science of guitar sound is in this realm, so when I see people like Santana using their Dumbels I take that as “the best available science.” I appreciate TPS in this same light.

@ThatPedalShow2 жыл бұрын
Hello Wayne. It's not something we know very much about, truth be told. One of the many considerations for new amps is that they tend to be designed to work with modern tubes. So it might not be the case that your beautiful old Mullards would necessarily be a great partner. This is where we duck out and consult people who really do know what they're talking about. And those people are the people who've worked on hundreds and hundreds (at least) of amps. Cheers!

I recently discovered replacement blades for a razor cutter that survived against rust in a prominent Texas Gulf Coast city for decades due to having been sealed in a plastic tube. An electrical contact kept '"dry" by similar means should b equivalent if not superior to a soldered contact.

Mission furniture from the early 20th century was ammonia-fumed. I've got a few old chairs in my lounge that are fumed oak. When you fume white oak with ammonia it first comes out grey-purple, then after applying wax it goes dark brown. The advantage of fuming over dye is that the colour goes really deep into the wood. If I'm not mistaken I think it also hardens the wood a tad. But of course dealing with high-mole ammonia is extremely hazardous, so warnings are in order: a single breath of the fumes would likely kill you, and it's highly corrosive to your skin. Really, really not for amateurs to handle.

Always soldering. Good wiring harness is crucial. Why introducing possible weak spot how ever long it could take to make it fail? Gibson wiring harness made in 50's is only way to go with such guitars. Two layer isolation Gavitt braided cable, Switchcraft jack and pickup selector, 500K CTS pots and nice paper in oil caps. In decades I've tried it all and nothing touches such classic wiring harness.

Custom designed combo amps should be designed with the speaker and cab in mind to create that artistic "thing". I am limited to a number of "things" both by spatial and financial resources. I recently saw a video by someone able to design a room around a stereo system. Even without limitation of finances, time to custom manufacture and machine after engineering stretched the completion out decades. I'm not that patient.
