I'd add, for the person who asked, that the Keeley Aria is fantastic for smoother low-gain sounds. When you combine the boost/OD side with the compressor side, it does an *exceptional* job giving you thickness and sustain without too much grit - it really can sound like an NMV amp right in the sweet spot, still pretty clean, but singing and fat.

I struggled with guitar tendinitis for around 20 years. Once I had a sleep study done and improved my sleep, it mostly went away, even after all of that time. If your body can't recover overnight, it wears down. Other than that, lifting weights has helped a lot. Strong arms and hands just don't have to work as hard and that can improve range of motion if done correctly. Massages and injections can give a brief reprieve, but it wasn't a long term solution for me. Experimenting with changing technique could be helpful depending on what you're doing now. I disagree with the 'just stop' suggestion. Reducing time practicing in various positions can be helpful, but if the solution is just to stop, it's not really a solution is it? And most normal relatively young bodies should be able to play guitar an hour a day. If not, something is wrong and it should be addressed. Only stop if it's ruining your quality of life in general (I think that is months at least).

How long does it take to know a guitar's "the one?" ...Sitting in a room with how many different models? My dad was a Guild and Jag guy and he bought me my first Strat so I was a Strat and Jag guy (Into Twin and Princeton) for about a decade and a half. Then I shifted to Rics. Then an acoustic phase driven by Taylor. Now I play my SG Jr and PRS Hollowbody (into Marshal Astoria and Mesa Cali) more than anything and I have a collection that would make many guitar heroes jealous. I move between them as mood and the sound in my head and the sounds made by my collaborators at the moment dictate. There was a time when Clapton would have said he was a Gibson guy... and at the same time Page was a Fender guy. Most players move around. As your ears age some sounds are more appealing and others less. Maybe you move into a different genre of music and that drives a journey into different equipment... Everything out there is good and there are neither wrong nor right answers to what is "the one" guitar.

After seeing every hand physiotherapist (it was also in my forearm/wrist) in South Australia (including some surgeons) and travelling 700kms to a clinic that specialises in musicians injuries nothing had worked. What did work was I came across a physio online, Joshua Tucker who has a treatment for guitar tendinitis (which for the vast majority that's what you're really suffering even if you've been told otherwise) and he also addresses other conditions like carpal tunnel and tennis elbow; anyway after over a year of being basically unable to play (or tie shoelaces or use a fork etc when it was bad) within two weeks it was gone...I was supposed to do the treatment for a month but it's been years and still no problem. As Mick eluded to, be mindful of posture, repetition...and diet.

Re. from 40:53, I have a Marshall model 1958 made in 1967. It’s the 2x10” combo version of the 18 watt amp. Two channels, one with less gain than the other but with tremolo. In this respect it’s similar to the classic Vox AC15 circuit. Greatly attenuated bass but lovely midrange punch. Breaks up easily & smoothly. The power transformer is fixed at ~230v, which means here in North America I have to plug it into a step-up transformer.

A thought on the loud amp versus quiet amp video. If it was entitled something like "Do I play better when its loud?" (Which was alluded to in the subtitle) it might have made the point a bit more. I think the 'for recording' got people to think about sound quality rather than performance quality, which I believe was what you were interested in investigating. For me if its too loud I become acutely aware of my playing and start thinking too much, losing the moment. Back to drums....

Mick, I haven't studied the Silver Sterling Two-Rock, but a cathode follower will tend to give you a directness of attack and an emphasis on higher harmonics that you don't get as much from a plate-driven tone stack. You can really hear it in the difference between, say, a tweed Bassman (all that crunch and bite) vs. most other tweed amps, or in a Rectifier vs. other Mesa/Boogies (though obviously there's a lot more going on there). Pretty much anything Marshall-based is going to have a cathode follower, and most classic Fendery things don't, so it's interesting to find one in a mega-clean amp like the Silver Sterling.
@eaglerayrob2 жыл бұрын
I'm not an amp tech or designer but my understanding is that the Cathode Follower in the context of a SSS is used post-phase inverter and is directly coupled to the Power tubes. Not the typical Cathode Follower used to drive tone stacks. Here is how Alex at Science Amplification explained it to me recently when I asked if post-phase inverter CF were used in his amps. "It's a really complex subject and is implemented in different ways, but theoretically in amps where the the post PI CF is directly coupled it can supply more current and push the amp into what's called class AB2 operation for more power. The CF can also prevent "blocking distortion" in the output tubes without having to reduce very low bass, but in my experience most amps doing this (especially Dumbles) already carefully reduce bass throughout the preamp to keep the amp from blocking and feeling sluggish. I could go on!" I think this, Power section direct coupled Cathode Follower, is a different animal than the Tone Stack Cathode Follower. But I may be wrong. Anyway, I hope this is helpful.
@corpse-in-orbit2 жыл бұрын
@@eaglerayrob Oh wow, I've never heard of a cathode follower being implemented like that - when you're already up to the voltage at the end of the preamp and then employ a CF, it must juice the living hell out of the power section. And I guess, in theory at least, you would end up with a higher voltage on the other side of the output transformer, along with the high current that OTs normally produce. I wonder what that would do to the speakers ... huh. Thanks, very interesting!
@eaglerayrob2 жыл бұрын
Sorry for nerding out but here's some additional info about the advantages of the post-PI CF directly coupled to the Power Tubes. "A DC-coupled cathode follower between the phase inverter and the grid of the output tubes, with the cathode follower cathode resistor returned to a high negative voltage, and the grid bias applied to the grid of the cathode follower, effectively isolates the output tube grid circuit from the phase inverter and its associated AC coupling, and provides a very low impedance source for the output stage. This will prevent the output stage from going into grid clamp, and will eliminate the long time constant of the AC coupling. This method has the unfortunate side effect of requiring an extra tube and completely ruining the value of your vintage amp, so it is best used only on new designs, but is highly recommended. You will also get more power out of the output stage because it is now running in class AB2 or class A2 (the "2" suffix indicates grid current flows for a portion of the cycle)." If Howard Dumble added this mod to your amp I don't think the value of your amp would be decreased 😀

With my Spark, I feel like all I need to do is tweak the amp settings and I can get any tone I want. Am I missing something? So maybe my question is -- if you have enough versatility with your amp set (maybe a ton pedals) does the guitar even matter?
