He sings it even better now. At 78, Roger Daltrey blows the roof off the dump every single time. I saw him Saturday at Bethel Woods in the Catskills -- the music streaming right up over the mountains, and the complete and utter joy on his face, the joy of performing at the top of his form. If you get the chance, go! This is the experience of a lifetime.

This song is so amazing. I know Pearl Jam covered it and Bettye Lavette(sp) sang it at Kennedy Center Honors, but I can't imagine anyone who can pull this off like Daltrey. Possibly Patti Labelle? I'm biased because I'm a Who fanatic, but this song in my opinion is one of the greatest examples of pure talent alongside the best of the best. I may be old, but talent is ageless and this is raw talent at it's core.

@@Twotontessie At the time, The Who we’re known for their inter band fueding as well as their music. Roger and Pete could barely get along and none of them really got along with Kenny Jones who replaced Keith Moon as drummer. By 1982, they had had enough of each other which is why they broke up Bob Geldoff, the organizer of Live Aid, said that trying to get them to reunite for this concert was like trying to get me man’s four ex~wives together. That being said, around that time, Pete had written a song called After The Fire and gave it to Roger because he thought Roger could do the song justice, which Roger did.

So i made a comment before about the brilliant lyrical content and rogers tackle of petes emotions but now i saw something else just now... It dawned on me that not only is this song about missing someone you love when apart but also in that second verse when rogers sings of tears from on high...i think thats when you feel the loss of a love you cherished seoerate by death or even breaking up. So to me it means live does reign over you... even when you want to be free... These emotions never let you go whether they lift you to the heavens or slam you into the ground. Beautiful illustrated. Damn i live your townsends lyrics... f###### powerfully on point. As a poet and writer i feel like kindergarten after listening to the who. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😢😢😢😢😢❤❤❤❤❤

First point, agreed. But Freddie can totally sing this song, well within his range and style especially the chorus.

I remember watch wonder rama back in 1975 I was 12 yrs old. The interviewer said to Roger he had the bluest eyes he never seen before on a man. The interviewer Bob McCallister was sooo right.
