British ensemble VOCES8 takes a cappella chamber singing to a new level. Called “impeccable” (Gramophone) and “slickest of the lot” (BBC Radio 3), the 8-voice ensemble performs everything from Renaissance polyphony to contemporary commissions and popular arrangements. The program featured works by Bach, Byrd, Mendelssohn, Rachmaninov, Duke Ellington, Nat King Cole, Simon and Garfunkel, Ben Folds, Jonathan Dove, Kate Rusby and more.
In addition, VOCES8 employed their unique “VOCES8 Method” of music education, which uses rhythm and sound to enhance the development of numeracy, literacy and linguistics. They worked with LiveConnections’ school and community partners in a series of workshops, and were joined at the concert by special guest choirs from C.W. Henry School, a Philadelphia public school; Our Lady of Confidence Day School, which serves teens with intellectual disabilities; and Germantown Recovery Community, which serves adults receiving mental health, therapeutic and recovery services. It's part of LiveConnections’ "A Song Everyone Can Sing" initiative, focused on accessibility and inclusion through singing.
The concert is presented by LiveConnections, a nonprofit in residence at World Cafe Live. "These aren't your typical collaborations. LiveConnections creates synergy between unlikely bedfellows" (Philly Magazine). Our critically acclaimed LiveConnections Presents concert series features collaborative concerts that cross musical boundaries, with adventurous artist pairings, brand new commissions and unique community participation.

Recorded live on March 4, 2018, at World Cafe Live, Philadelphia.

There is a comment to acoustics. If the room doesn’t resonate like a four hundred cathedral, it isn’t good enough for this group. I am so totally impressed with beautiful individual voices and their blending.

Agree. This is a sacrilege. They have to be one of the greatest vocal ensembles in the world to make this gig audible despite a room that would far better fit to an open space office.

I attended this concert, and the amplification was horrible, with distortion from a large speaker overhead. At intermission, I asked for it to be turned off, which improved the sound a lot. Acoustically, they were great! The venue left a lot to be desired, but to accommodate all the kids, they needed the space. I'm still glad I went. I'll never forget Danny Boy.

Only a self-righteous, arrogant, sound engineer (who evidently knows nothing about how to mic up such an ensemble) would think that VOCES8 are incapable of filling, what looks like to be a small hall, with dreadful acoustics, and need to be amplified, then not adding any reverberation. This is surely the worst recording of the group anywhere on KZbin. A few more lights would be a bonus, too.

I'm watching this on November 3, 2018 on the night Voces8 is performing in Detroit, Michigan Blake's hometown. Since I'm unable to attend the concert this is substituting quite nicely. I hope Blake will take the opportunity to introduce his fellow choristers to some of our fine cuisine while here like Buddie's Pizza and Lafayette Coney Island. It's your duty as a Detroiter Blake. Welcome to Detroit Voces8. I'm sure the audience at Christ Church is having a wonderful evening. Oh and up load the full concert to KZbin as well.

Lebensjahr in vielen Chören mitgesungen. )

What a shame that this excellent group and the promoters chose the WORST VENUE POSSIBLE for this concert. A dark, souless, BONE DRY room called World Cafe Live, where the stage is constructed perfectly to be just about the most unmusical accoustic it is possible to design. A tiny stage surrounded by ambience-free absorbant materials that completely destroy any chance of reflections, natural reverberation or warmth of tone. You might as well have put this choir in a giant egg box and closed the lid. It is the WORST accoustic I have ever heard from any stage. What on earth was Barnaby Smith thinking?

This recording absolutely has to go. Can you imagine what someone whose introduction to VOCES8 was this video would likely do? I can - they'd probably click off and ignore every other VOCES8 video on KZbin and miss some of the finest vocalising they'll ever hear. I'm as dedicated a VOCES8 fan as you'll ever find, and I could only stomach about five minutes of this horrible recording. Absolute shit, and World Cafe Live has some serious gall posting it.
