Quite honestly, I am impressed with the ability of the a Russian companies to overcome Western sanctions. Not what the US/EU expected for sure.
@fabr5747 Жыл бұрын
1. You are aware that many countries in the world continue to export occidental goods to Russia, and that they are circumventing the sanctions that way? 2. Are you aware that many countries continue to trade with Russia, and some of those countries have a strong industrial base with alternative to occidental goods? 3. No one being serious did expect any other results ! There is a major difference between expecting to collapse (which is what people wanted to read) and not supporting Russia's economy, which is the real goal, especially as they use a lot of occidental technologies in armament ! 4. There are many elements that will take time to fail, and for which alternatives need to be discovered. Example, aircraft that are using other aircraft for spare parts. As there is no alternative for occidental planes on long haul travels, the number of aircraft able to fly will progressively decrease as the number of aircraft used for spare parts increase. Russia oil and gas economy requires a lot of occidental parts and needs to find replacements ! 5. NO MATTER THE COUNTRY, if half of the world economy imposes sanctions, the country's economy will suffer greatly. 6. One aspect that isn't explained enough... The GDP is often mentioned, but doesn't describe everything properly. The world economy evolved a lot, and the third sector takes a major part of the world economy. When the GDP of Russia decreases, the sectors that are facing the sanctions the hardest are suffering greatly, but not all sectors are affected at all. There is nothing unsurprising here. But some of the industries will be in a terrible spot, and also, importantly, there is a difference between surviving and thriving. Russia survives a lot on Soviet investments in military, science and engineering. But since the fall of the Soviet Union, despite major revenues in oil and gas, military budgets have been minimal. Investments in technologies have been limited. Russia is surviving thanks to the natural resources, but it's definitely not a positive situation in which they are... 7. The military budget is taking over all other budgets in Russia. Education will suffer. Young people at their prime have to go to war, will be injured, killed, or traumatised. Those are all people which will be a cost to Russia instead of bringing money to the economy. Brains fled Russia as well cause they could afford to pay in order to leave. And as those people are criminalised now, they will never return, unless there is a regime change. So when you look at the situation, there are a lot of long term consequences, and some believe that the short term proves that Russia is ok. 8. Last and not least. Russians are dying for a useless war, and a stupid decision of their president in 2014...

I have a lot of admiration for the production of Russian vehicles and in particular the production of utility vehicles. Russia has managed to maintain very honest production quality, good equipment reliability and above all reparability accessible to all mechanics, including the depths of the Tundra. Today's Western vehicles are too fragile, almost disposable. Kind regards, a European citizen nostalgic for a time when we knew how to make good vehicles.

I think many people mix up quality of finish, with rugged and durable. Russian cars and trucks are often derided because they tend to have low quality finishing, no air conditioning, ugly design. But they are very durable and can endure temperature, terrain extremes. Some offroad enthusiasts have even found old Ladas comparable with new Jeeps and Land Rovers when crossing difficult roads. I'm pretty sure most of these trucks are going to be uncomfortable and unfashionable. But the trucker won't have to worry about breaking down on a snowy Siberian road 1000km from anywhere else at -50C. Your average Mercedes truck is less survivable.

@hananokuni2580 Жыл бұрын
@marcinrybarczyk001 Probably poor working conditions. If you pay them well, Russian factory workers turn out very good stuff. Otherwise, expect more than a few lemons. I think that these days the workers at the military equipment factories aren't being paid enough. Not only that, but the Russian military has a pretty big internal corruption problem. This is why Prigo bitches often at the Ministry of Defense. I remember that Soviet equipment wasn't too shabby, even if much of it was inferior to Western gear. The prevailing philosophy in Soviet manufacturing was to make something good enough, not necessarily go out of one's way to make it the best product ever (which is what the Japanese like to do). It might look ghetto, but it will do what it's supposed to do.

As an American I made a 15 hour ride in a 20plus year old Lada. We had our food with us (Russian road trip) and 5 people cramped in this tiny thing. The lada goes and goes. Easy to fix, and like the one poster said kinda ugly but it works. There are plenty of very old Lada’s in Russia on the road. That’s all the evidence I had to see if it’s a durable car. These things take beatings and just keep going. It’s rather impressive.

Not bad, thanks for worrying ! German exports are higher than ever ! Laughing at the region in the world who is supplying old technology for today's Russian trucks as it is something impressive? And for self-sufficiency, Russia would need 30-40 years of major investments in engineering ! Something Russia hasn't done since it lost all the other Soviet Union allies like Ukraine that was a major hub for aerospace technology for example. And now, all the budget is going to the army, the manpower as well, and a lot of brains left the country when it was still possible. So Russia isn't in a good position in reality ! China has been investing in technology for decades, and it is still lagging behind on many fields.
@johntheaccountant5594 Жыл бұрын
@@fabr5747 Regarding "the Chinese lagging behind in technology" go to the best universities in the UK and USA and you will find that there are plenty of Chinese students doing masters in engineering and electronics. Where did most of the drones, cctv etc come from. It is China.
@fabr5747 Жыл бұрын
@@johntheaccountant5594 You are confusing mass production and technology... You are confusing commercialisation and technology. 1. Yes, not denying the presence and the quality of the students. But those are STUDENTS, they haven't entered the professional world yet, and they go to occidental countries for which reason? 2. Technology vs commercialisation... Examples: - Apple didn't invent ANYTHING with the IPhone, except for their chip that is a major development. But for the rest, there is nothing that Apple created. So the same way, Chinese drones are just the commercialisation of existing technologies. It isn't reducing the importance of it, but China lags behind on creativity for the moment. China has been doing a lot of reverse engineering. With success in some fields, with terrible failure in other places. And last but not least, China struggles a lot in the fact that it is a highly corrupt country. "Technology companies" apply for grants from the government to make money to develop AI, to develop chips, etc... But a lot of the companies cut corners to make money. They will use refurbished chips, and rebrand them, saying that they made it. They will make contracts for export on chips, and half of them aren't even chips (look at the P-8 Poseidon case with the fake Chinese chips). China has invested trillions in R&D, yet it is not that creative yet, and most of the companies that were making the high tech in China were foreign, and are leaving. And it's not because Chinese are stupid, absolutely not. It's because the central government and the local ones are so problematic that there is no incentive to have a fair society. Everyone tries to screw over everyone. Look at their TOFU construction... And if you look at the ancestral "code of conduct", this isn't the way they used to behave. But the CCP is not a good government system. The impossibility of criticism leads to a form of runaway where it gets worse. Taïwan with a similar cultural background went in a different direction successfully.
