Wow, Mark Twain, then Garrison Keillor.....America's greatest story-tellars. Years ago, I was a volunteer at Prairie Home Companion shows in St. Paul, so I was able to see these shows live...these experiences were some of the best times of my life. 🙂

Some years ago when I worked I job where I was super-anxious every day, and it was a good hour-long drive, I listened to Lake Wobegon during every morning drive, to "fortify" and calm myself for the coming day.

I get on youtube every evening and fall asleep to garrison telling the evening news from lake Wobegon, and within moments I'm asleep, I close my eyes and picture myself rite there in the chatterbox cafe, watching the Norwegian Bachelor Farmers roaming about.

Garrison Keillor will always be MY Prairie Home Companion. There was no one like him. He turned radio into our friend and neighbor.
@jakester4553 жыл бұрын
I don’t care about the harassment allegations against Keillor. I do, however, care about hypocrisy. I began listening to APHC in the nineties when you actually had to listen to it on the radio on Saturday evenings. I used to make a point of tuning in before he started the News from Lake Wobegon. I loved it. I would marvel as he seamlessly shifted from entertaining people to preaching a gospel message. He was truly gifted. Fast forward fifteen years. Obama came along, and eventually Trump came along and Garrison began to show his true colors. It’s like he couldn’t control his rage toward conservatives anymore, conservatives who, unbeknownst to him, made up the majority of his audience! And so I went from really enjoying the show to clenching my teeth and shouting at the radio for Garrison to JUST SHUT UP and go back to entertaining! Garrison’s rage toward the right increased week by week, yet I still tuned in, painful as it was. He took subtle shots at my midwestern conservative values, he took subtle shots at anyone on the right, he took subtle shots at whoever was in the news that week, telling me how stupid I was to vote for them and how much smarter he was for supporting Clinton, Obama and the other progressives on the left. He did one monologue where he talked about a bizarre dance troupe who was popular “in the midwest and in the south.” The audience laughed uproariously. Message received, Garrison. We’re lowbrow and stupid. We just don’t get it. Then one day he just came out and said it live on the air, and I wish I had it on tape. “I’m a communist” said Keillor offhandedly. The audience didn’t react and the show went on. I was in utter disbelief, but now it made sense. I continued to listen to A Prairie Home Companion but I wasn’t enjoying it as much anymore. About a year later, Garrison AGAIN proclaimed he was a communist. That broke it for me. I started listening less and less often as Garrison continued to take shots at Donald Trump and all the deplorable idiots who voted for him. Finally I wished that Garrison would lose his platform, and a few months later he did. His replacement was just as much of a liberal progressive as Garrison was. He had to be to get the gig. I never listened to APHC again. Now I only listen to the older recordings of the News from Lake Wobegon, from the time before Garrison lost his way.

@@jakester455 Highly doubt that Keilor said he was communist. I'm pretty sure you yourself couldn't define what is a communist. He did attack Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura because he didn't populism (which today we equate with trump, forerunner of what was to come). In that respect, Keilor was correct. He thought if people applied common sense they wouldn't fall for such con men.
@nedludd7622 Жыл бұрын
@@jakester455 You said it yourself, "We’re lowbrow and stupid. We just don’t get it." Conservatives can't tell _____ from shinola. You should look up his writing in magazines, for example, "We're Not in Lake Wobegon Anymore" from "In These Times". You will hate him even more.

+digitalmorgan I don't think you understand, Many years ago, A Prairie Home Companion was simultaneously broadcast on the Disney Channel. Us older folks remember that. It was awesome to turn on the Disney Channel to watch this, it was a family thing we did together. One of the few good times. (That was back before the Disney Channel had commercials.)

Changing the name from A Prairie Home Companion to Live from Here is a slap in the face to what Garrison Keillor established years ago. Change it back!

The way American Public Media botched this working relationship is one of the great scandals in US. History. They thought they could spin Garrison out of his I.P. Rights and then it backfired. This is a public relations nightmare for them.

Change what back?? I don't understand why so many of you are complaining that "Live From Here" isn't "Prairie Home Companion." What do you expect? "Live from Here" was never meant to be "Prairie Home Companion." Chris Thiele is not Garrison Keillor, and he understands that. And he's not a storyteller, he's a musician, so he does what he knows how to do best. Why do some of you complain about this???? I happen to like "Live From Here" because the music is terrific. I'd love to see Garrison Keillor again, and I have seen him live four times onstage, but let's acknowledge that "Live From Here" is NOT a replacement for "Prairie Home Companion" but a different show entirely. A slap in the face? I don't think so.

Maddog is a "news" shill for corporate interests and writes all the news that fits into their agenda. Once upon a time, she was different when she was on Air America radio. But she sold out for the big money, who can blame her. Now she is a consummate liar.
