Climbing Mt. Shasta in a Day!

Hovering just over 14,000FT, Mt. Shasta mountain is a legendary active volcano in Northern California. Climbing (or hiking, if you can call it that) to the top in the winter and spring months requires mountaineering 7,000FT straight up through the snow and ice of Avalanche Gulch, only reaching the summit after a crawl up the infamous Misery Hill. While most people break the hike up into two days, we decided to challenge ourselves and see if we could summit Mt. Shasta in a single day. While we accounted for as many of the elements as we could, our weather forecast vastly underestimated the wind gusts at the summit, where we were forced to battle against 85 mph wind to reach the top. Type 2 fun at its finest!
DISCLAIMER: The climb to the top of Mt. Shasta is a technical route. It should not be attempted without the proper gear and experience. As always, hike at your own risk.

Again, great meeting you there! Car to car was hard but an amazing time. Shasta is a serious mountain, im 2/4 up there after last weekend, so its definitely a serious place, and I commend the effort. Great job, and again, what a pleasure, you guys are super nice and gracious (they stopped to have a conversation with me at 13k). Climb on!

Bennett! Was so great running into you -- you really gave us a lot of encouragement just when we needed it, as our legs were starting wobble a bit. We were actually talking on the way down about how glad we were to run into you up there. Hope you had a great descent, and got to enjoy that incredible glissade! --A

I loved the cheerful personalities of this couple. What an extreme day and something to always be proud of. Amazing positive attitude, I could never be that way but I appreciate it in others. And I know all about this mountain and what it takes to summit, especially in a single day, very difficult. They not only displayed clear competence in the high altitude mountain environment but also the wisdom to decide during hardship whether to continue. I would trust this couple to lead me just about anywhere after seeing this.

Thanks very much -- that really means a lot to us to hear that. As we've gotten into harder and harder adventures, we've been finding that keeping a positive attitude is definitely the key to success. Preparation and training are of course crucial, but when we're tired and freezing 14,000 feet up, it's the optimism and positivity that gets us through for sure!❤️

Shasta is a harsh mistress, but even mountainous California wears a special smile up there. It’s also considered to be a “harmonic convergence” location, like Sedona. I don’t go in for all that, but when I first climbed it in ‘75, my mother had passed a couple weeks prior, and behind my goggles, I finally mourned her with honest, unselfconscious tears. So my motto became, “Mount Shasta - come for the climbing, stay for the healing”

Of the many videos of yours that I have watched, this was the first one during which I was worried for your safety! I always know you both hike and climb safely and have turned back when conditions require, but that was some dicey wind. I'm so glad you were able to cross this off your bucket list. You both inspire me to get in shape and hike more and more!

You're so right, Chris, and we felt similarly. As it turned out we handled the wind ok, but we really didn't know exactly what was going to happen once it got super fierce. Like, can wind that hard blow a big piece of ice into you and break something? We were definitely wondering about those kind of things as we got toward the top, but thankfully everything went ok. SO stoked that we're inspiring you to get out there -- that's all we need to hear to keep us motivated to keep making vids! ❤️

Thanks for putting this together and posting it! I’m sure it added to the work of getting up this challenging peak, but it brings it all back to those who’ve been there and introduces those who haven’t to another world. Congratulations on your persistence on a rough day! I’ve made four attempts on Shasta. All three on Avalanche Gulch were successful- one right of the Heart and through the Red Banks, one left of Heart, and one right of Heart and Red Banks. One the last one we were passed on the descent by a guy doing the one day trip as his last of the Lower 48 14ers. As we were glissading, he passed us on foot! I tried the one day effort on Clear Creek in a low snow year when Avvy Gulch was melted out. Made it above the Thumb and decided to turn back when I met the lone party above me coming down.

My wife and I attempted Avalanche Gulch and turned around in 2017. In 2021, we returned to try again, but it was a low snow year and Avalanche Gulch was melted out in June, so we successfully summited Via Clear Creek Route. We did have fun on Clear Creek, but we still want to go up Avalanche Gulch. I am hoping we might find the time to attempt it this year. I was looking at videos for Shasta and ended up on your channel. I've now subscribed and watched quite a few of your videos, they are great, and I think I'll keep watching. @@LiveHardxLoveHard There's a lot of anomalies around Mt Shasta and the mythical buck is one of them. There's many reports from hunters shooting at it and it dissapears. The day I saw it I was exploring a ridge line to see how far up it I could go. I was around 11,500ft well above the tree line and stopped for lunch, just out of the wind, in a small group of rocks. As I was sitting there I heard some small rocks going down the side of the ridgeline and looked up to see the most magnificent buck I'd ever seen. My first thought was this is the Arnold Schwarzenegger of bucks! I went into my backpack to get my camera and by the time I looked back up it was no where in sight. I could see the whole area and it just completely disappeared. Another of those magic, unexplainable moments on the mountain!

Back in the 80's I owned and flew my own twin engine airplane and I used to fly right over the top of Mount Shasta, and a couple of times I banked a steep hard turn to circle around the top super close to just check out how beautiful the mountain peak was. I just did the drive south on I-5 through southern Oregon & north California, the most beautiful drive this Texan has ever done. I have a commercial cert & instrument rating and when I saw Mount Shasta and the Shasta Valley my first thought was to find an FBO & a CFI, and rent a plane to circle Shasta and fly through the valley. Time wouldn't allow, but I'll be back to do this.

Thanks Paul, and yes you are right! There were a lot of people who camped up there, though surprisingly few of them actually made it to the summit -- at least that we saw. We weren't sure if maybe their goal was only to climb to Red Banks in the first place, or if they turned due to the high winds and/or altitude sickness. The good news is it was beautiful everywhere up there, so they probably had a great experience regardless! And glissading is the best thing ever!! ❤️

And if you don't want to do the whole thing in a single-day sufferfest, 95% of people camp overnight at the lake which is also a great and slightly more relaxed way to do it. Either way, every time you see the epic pictures of that beast afterwards, you'll know you stood right at the top of it! ❤️

Congrats! I hiked Shasta solo in 2020 and recall those very high winds. I camped at Helen Lake so it was a two day effort for me. You did it in one day so that must have been intense. I was nervous for you using hiking poles till I finally saw you using your ice axe going up towards the Red Banks. Great adventure.

@LiveHardxLoveHard 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Robert! The one day push was definitely intense haha, but with our crazy work schedules it was the only way we could get it done. Plus it made for a great challenge! Yeah we were reassessing the pole vs ice axe decision constantly but in that particular part of the climb the poles were so helpful in propelling us up. The axe def came in handy later and would not have done this climb without it. So glad you’ve gotten to experience this mountain for yourself! ❤️

livehardxlovehard Did you see on Monday a female guide just died on Mt. Shasta and two of her clients who she was roped up with were also hurt from a fall all on Avalanche Gulch? Later that same day more people got hurt from very long falls and had to be airlifted out. I guess it was super icy due to a recent storm. When I did it in 202O I saw someone fall a long way on the descent down Avalanche Gulch and I was so shaken. I did not fully understand the danger till I saw that. Took me awhile to even feel safe to glissade. Glad you two made it safely. Still love Mt. Shasta and your video is great. Just hope folks be careful.

I LOVED seeing this (though pretty scary at times)! I had a feeling you would go to Mt. Shasta soon. My partner, I, and a private guide climbed the Hotlum-Bolam Ridge (north side) a year ago. Like Elise, Mt. Shasta was on the top of my bucket list. Due to the high winds, low visibility, exposed glacier, and my minimal mountaineering experience, we topped at 13,200+ ft before turning back. Still, it felt extremely special being there. We were the only ones on the north side for the entire time we were there! I wanted to make it out again this year buuut I got pregnant. Lol We’re going on a safer backpacking trips instead.

OMG that is so badass to come up that way! Now of course we want to try it too!! Very smart that you turned back with high winds and low visibility. Yes that wind was truly soul-sapping, and there definitely weren't many people who made it past that point that day. What helped us is that we've been in some other cold, windy, and high-altitude sufferfests (like when we climbed Mt. My neck of the woods. I last tried to climb Shasta on my 45th birthday at the end of May several years ago. I started at 4 AM under a full moon, and it was gorgeous. I reached 11,500 feet just as the sun was high enough to shine some light on Avalanche Gulch, and that's when my water ran out, or more accurately, my liquid water. It had frozen in my pack, and I was down to a 20 oz slushie Sobe. So, I turned around at 12,000 feet and haven't been back since. I went up a couple of times in my 20's, but I have been lucky enough to have calm winds every time (all one day attempts). Much easier than what you guys dealt with. If I ever try it again, it will be a 2 day trip up the Clear Creek route, I believe it is called. Personally, I think Mt Shasta is more beautiful and has better views than Whitney, plus you don't need to share it with 100 people.

You guys are bad ass! That's some crazy cardio climbing
@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Dave! Yeah it's funny to think of it as cardio because you're moving so slowly, but you're absolutely right. Because of the altitude our hearts were pounding like crazy and we probably burned at least 10 - 15,000 calories on the hike. We're still eating like pigs 4 days later trying to catch back up!!

You guys are so Fing awesome. I hiked two mountains that did this same thing to me, MT. Evans and MT. Columbia. I commend you on your relentless determination. It can be tough. Again, i love your videos and keep up the hard work. I will be conquiring Mt. Massive this year along with many other badass hikes.

Thanks Douglas -- you are the king of 14ers!! Stoked that you're doing Mt. Massive -- that thing is almost as tall as Whitney. One of these days we have to spend a month or two in CO and start knocking off some of your black book of climbs! ❤️

The glissade was incredible! One word of warning though -- it was hellaciously steep, so really dig the ax in and keep the speed under control or it could get hairy! ❤️

That was an amazing accomplishment! I don't know how you did that in one day! 14,000 feet is so difficult! The 85mph winds would have made me turn back. At that speed you can be blown off the mountain!

Thanks very much. Yes those winds really added a lot to the difficulty level, but in retrospect we're glad for them because they made it even more memorable! ❤️

A true Adam and Elise adventure right here! I knew it was going to be a good one when you guys said most people attempt this in 2 days! That wind looked absolutely brutal. So beautiful there! I’ve done a bunch of hiking in the Shasta area but never Mount Shasta itself! So cool and badass you guys did this one! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

@@LiveHardxLoveHard yes!!! Such a cute little town 🥰 Megan probably knows more hike names then me! There was one close to her place that they were living that was beautiful for sunrise! Not particularly long though. 🤪 and I really love Lake Siskiyou! And there was another lake hike too. I would go back and spend time there again in a heartbeat!!

I come across this video because I am interested to summit Shasta. Had to turn around because of white out and my partner experience high altitude. What got me to finish watching is because you two keep entertaining and accomplished. You young lady is pretty and doing extreme adventures for the camera. The older gentlemen is adventurous like I want to be when I'm older. I hope you two live in the Seattle area where I am located so we can meetup for some mountaineering experiences.

Very glad you enjoyed the video! Sorry to hear you had to turn around, but you definitely did the right thing given the conditions. The summit will always be there for another attempt. We live in Los Angeles, but hope to get up to Seattle next summer to climb Rainier and also some of the other great hikes around there! ❤️
