Never had ulcers, do now after 3 months of gastric bypass. Don't smoke, drink and no anti inflammatories either. Pain was not fun - surgeon acted pretty quickly. Now on nexium for 3 months and carafate for 6 weeks. Fingers firmly crossed

I had a RNY 18 years ago. Last fall I had a perforated ulcer and developed sepsis. I spent a week in the ICU and nearly died. It was in my remnant stomach so scopes couldn't access it.

I am 3 months post gastric bypass and all of a sudden was throwing up blood. I was hospitalized again and an ulcer & inflammation was detected. The ulcer was treated with 2 clips during the gastroscopy now I take medication against tge inflammation. 5 days at the hospital and I still have blood in my stool (not fresh red one).. I am so anxious this will now be a lifetime condition and I will have to live with pain. I am so scared. How do other patients live after?

Hi, we are sorry to hear that you have had this type of issue after your bariatric procedures. Ulcers are unfortunately fairly common after gastric bypass surgery occurring with a 5 to 10% incidence however the vast majority of the time they will heal and you will not have any further issues. Occasionally it may become chronic and require surgery

I would like to know what is happening when the pain increases. Is it the acid build up? We call it episodes around my house. It makes the whole household freeze
@LiveHealthyMD3 жыл бұрын
This could mean that the ulcer is getting worse or is irritated from eating.

I can tell ya I'm living a holy he'll on some days. It hurts so bad and I had rny in 2007

We recommend you schedule an appointment with your surgeon to discuss this. There is a danger to not taking action as the ulcer could perforate or become chronic and never heal, which would require surgery.

I had my gastric bypass in 2017. I'm constantly suffering from ulcers all the time. In April 2021 I perforated my stomach, the pain was unbearable. I'm always nauseous and vomit daily. Just had an upper endoscopy October 2021 and I have another ulcer near my gastric pouch. They did 2 biopsies to see if it's Hplory. Is there a permanent cure? I don't take nsaids, smoke, or drink. I also don't want it revised.

Unfortunately in a very small percentage of patients, this can be a recurring problem. A surgical revision of the anastomosis (the connection) is your best option for long term improvement

What is your experience with patients who smoke hookah and develop marginal ulcers?
@LiveHealthyMD3 жыл бұрын
We do not recommend smoking of any kind because it increases the risk of developing marginal ulcers, which become harder to heal when someone is smoking.
