The "book of condolences" never existed. However, De Valera, IMHO, made a majorly serious blunder by offering his condolences to the German Ambassador in Ireland. Most people don't realize that Ireland was a Neutral country during WWII (the "Emergency" as they called it) - at least on paper. Ireland did help downed 'ally' pilots get home while imprisoning nazi pilots for the duration. As someone who has friends in both countries, it saddens me to see this happening.
