BRUSSELS (AP) - President Donald Trump made no explicit mention of NATO's mutual defense pact on Thursday even as he spoke at a ceremony unveiling a memorial dedicated to it.
Trump has so far refused to personally commit to abiding by Article 5. U.S., which commits allies to defend any of the 28 members that come under attack. But Press Secretary Sean Spicer says, "It goes without saying" that Trump's presence at the event underscores the White House's "commitments and treaty obligations."
Trump spoke at the unveiling of a steel beam from the 107th floor of one of the World Trade Center towers at the new NATO headquarters in Brussels.
It's intended as a reminder of NATO's commitment to its collective defense clause. Article 5 has only been activated once, after 9/11.
U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Wednesday that "of course" the United States supports Article 5.

Trump and his supporters are so misinformed. NATO countries owe nothing to the USA. Five basic points about the U.S. and NATO: 1. NATO members don’t “owe” the United States, and NATO countries don’t pay the U.S. to defend them. 2. Contributions to NATO are based on each nation’s capability and its national interests, as agreed to in the treaty. 3. The U.S. decides for itself how much it contributes to NATO. 4. The military commitment of the U.S. to NATO isn’t a favor to Europe. It’s vital to U.S. national security. 5. European nations should probably spend more on defense because their security requires it. But that's their decision.

Mark - When or if we pull out of Europe, Putin will be knocking at your door. When the police are not there to protect you, the criminals in the neighborhood will invade your home. You better pay your police officers their salary to have protection.

Germany only spends 1.19% of GDP!!!! Germany worlds 4th largest economy!!! If I were Trump I would tear up the whole NATO agreement and start again with those countries that are willing to pay their fare share of the costs -- let the others suffer the protection of the EU Wermacht!

Reading all the comments here it is staggering that with this debate going on for some time now some people still think countries "pay into" NATO. Is it really so hard to grasp that the contribution to NATO is measured mainly by the percentage of GDP spend on defence on the countries own military? Is it so hard to grasp that there already is an agreement to meet the 2% of GDP spending on defence until 2024?
