There is no guarantee that hamas will release hostages or return the bodies. Islam allows them to lie and get the ceasefire and then ignore their promises. It goes back to when Mohammed was losing a battle and sued for peace. After the peace deal, he started rebuilding his army for another attack.

I remember serving in the army in Germany 25 years after the end of WW2. We were based just a mile away from Belsen concentration camp. We used to look at the older people living there and wonder how they could be unaffected by the camp in their midst. The long time harsh treatment of hostages was bound to lead to many deaths. I suspected this all along. Since Hamas keeps saying they don't know how many hostages there are and that they couldn't come up with many names. This also is a reason why they keep refusing a ceasefire. They can't come up with the hostages needed. So they offer to give up dead hostages and a small number of live hostages.

Even if Israel knew an attack was coming...it would have been very difficult for them to wage a preemptive war and actually have the nation and the U.S. behind them. Look at how tough it has been to continue, and soon finish the war, AFTER the outrage of the terroristic attack of Oct 7th! If Israel had operated preemptively...they would have been limited to just a limited operation which would have left the enemy in power, rearming and coming back even stronger to attack on an even larger basis. It would have been woefully inadequate, as all the weapons and tunnels discovered and the extent of the integration between the weapons and the civilians discovered in this war has proven out.

If Israel had stationed a reasonable force near the Gaza border, then October 7th would have been a complete failure for Hamas as they would have been routed as they came out into the open as they did that day. As it happened, the IDF had only around 600 personnel in the area, which is an astonishingly small number to guard a hostile border region. It was around 1/5th the size of the Hamas force of around 3000. If the IDF had permanently stationed a decent-sized combat brigade in the area, Hamas would likely have been stopped before they reached any civilian areas. It doesn't make any sense that a military with an active force in the range of 150,000 wouldn't have at least 4000 or 5000 in the border area in a state of readiness. What else was going on in Israel that such a relatively moderate number of soldiers could not be spared for an essential duty? I say that rhetorically because there was no need so great anywhere in Israel that they could not spare enough troops to properly man a hostile border.

The words NETANYAHU used to describe Israel’s war goals were not to destroy Hamas. What Netanyahu said repeatedly was, to remove Hamas ‘ability’ to ever harm Israelis again. He was referring to hamas military tunnels, other warfare infrastructure and hamas leadership.
