Agreed of more than ten staging systems BCLC is popular in the west and used for staging as well as for the management of HCC. Other systems prevalent in Asia such as- Hong Kong, Korea, China and Japan have their own systems and guidelines for management wherein the role of surgery is extended beyond early to the intermediate stage and even in locally advanced stage HCC if possible. The premise being that apart from LTx resection is the only potentially curative treatment for solid cancer in operable cases.
