I met the owner of a stall in Muscat market. He had Liverpool's pictures all over his shop. This old Omani man supported Liverpool since the 70's. A few years ago there was 100k people singing YNWA in the MCG for a pre-season game in Australia. Scouses need to stop whining and understand that these "tourists" are part of what makes Liverpool FC so great. Perhaps take a look at 100% local clubs in the EPL (and the Championship!) and see how they're doing. Despite not winning a League for more than 20 years this club has huge presence around the globe. It's natural that all these supporters would want to visit Anfield and watch a game and it's good business from the ownership to make money out of it.

I have Liverpool tattoos, I'm a die hard fan from the day I could walk and talk. I live a long way away and I've only been a handful of times, but when I went, yes I had my phone to take some pics, but I was by far one of the loudest and most passionate in that crowd, I lost my voice, I broke into tears and ynwa. I gave it my all, I hate how these lot slag us fans off. I bet half them walk out at 85th min if we are losing... It's so so hard to get Liverpool tickets in my opinion. So saying we ain't real fans for not being there is harsh. It's and expensive day out we can't all afford. The only problem I have with people who go, is the ones that don't sing. Come from wherever you like, go and show your club you love them! But just make sure you sing!! Sing the Liverpool way and don't stop! Get the players motivated! If you're doing that, then it shouldn't matter. Fuck there's some bitter people, scouse or not it's everyone's club to love. And I'm sure a lot of outsiders are 10x the fan than some of these locals.

For the clubs, it's an ongoing quest to hit a nice balance between the two - 1) still be a core part of a city's identity and at the same time, 2) the soul of the club must transcend to inspire affinity from fans from across the world. The global forces - economic and otherwise - is something that's already been at work for a long time. Thanks Paul and the Guardian Football team for an awesome video - keep up the good work!

As an Aussie evertonian I’ve been to goodison a few times and goodison still has that community local feel about it. I think the issue for Liverpool is that 60% of their anfield allocation isn’t for season tickets which means you’ll have your tour groups attend the match. Everton are a community club and I hope we never lose that.

Here in Australia both Everton and Liverpool have strong support. Both clubs have had Aussies play for them. For me Cahill was the a major reason I started investing my time, energy and money into the club. Everton seemed to just ooze class and community. And they generated such an electrifying atmosphere it got me buzzing even though I'm on the other side of the world. Goodison under the lights is fucking amazing.

As a Liverpool fan from the United States, this has been an eye-opener for me. It really sucks that locals are being boxed out by the club that they love and support. If I ever get lucky enough in my life to step inside of Anfield I'd want to be side by side with the local lads and support the way that they do.

As a foreign fan I feel bad at what they are making of the foreign support. Yes there are fans who take selfies and things like that but there are a lot more of us who'd cry when we get to Anfield because that is the pinnacle of every Liverpool fan. The passion for our club yes I'm calling it our club because its in our hearts 24*7 is too damn high. I agree with much of the sentiments of this piece, but I take issue with the ongoing demonisation of oversea fans. The world has changed, the game has changed, culture has changed, media has changed and not all of it is tourists fault. The club needs to strike a balance obviously but equally so called true fans need to be shade more respectful to a group of people who like it or not identify as true fans also. These fans get up at all times in the morning to watch the games, spend the same amount of time deliberating cheering brooding etc as local fans and ultimately if it was not for these oversea fans there would not be the money to buy the players which get us all off our seats. Its a very modern problem facing all of the big clubs and obviously there is sill a lot of work to be done. YNWA

Whether the top premier league teams like it or not, football tourism and the selfie set from Asia are gonna be around for a long long time. The premier league is the most famous domestic league in the world with the most money, its truly a global brand. On any given weekend the Emirates, the Bridge, the Lane, OT, Anfield, Etihad and Olympic are full of Tourists in for a game who mostly don't have the passion as the locals do. However if 4 people fly in from America for a Pool game, pay for Hotels, taxi's, food, drink and souvenirs then something that lucrative to a city is not gonna die it's here to stay

Liverpool is a global club. The success and support it has today, despite a slump for a stretch period, owe much to its global fan base. The local Scouse are deluded and close-minded if they think only regular fans can create an atmosphere. If you want to see familiar faces every goddamn match, go play in the division 2 or 3. You'll see the same die-hard supporters every time. But no division-2 (Championship) team can fill 54k seat every week. Sorry, mate. There will be a sea of empty seats even in a 30k stadium. Dortmund has cheap tickets but there are probably more "tourists" there than at any of the English grounds. Get wise and move on. The atmosphere has been absent because you were mid-table most seasons. Come back and complain when you're challenging the title till the end every season and the ground is still quiet.

Dortmund has the Yellow Wall, as in people standing... I´ve been to Anfield quite many times, before and after The Kop changed to seats. It is a HUGE difference. That just an obstacle for "togetherness" I felt more when I was young. As I now live in Finland, I can´t just go to every match like that. When I do, I sing and shout and chant my ass off. Supporters, fans, whatever you call them, should have an impact on the game by creating the atmosphere which would help the players and hence the team and the whole club. But that´s not what most people think, less and less every year. Like the game vs. Bournemouth; when the team we all obviously love is struggling, the spirit from the stands could´ve changed the outcome. Give the confidence and belief to the players to do better, basic psychology in effect.

I'm in America, so I can only go to Anfield maybe once a year. I love the club, but the atmosphere is cancerous and clearly hurts the player performance. Remember the Swansea game, when the crowd started to get behind the players and brought them back from 2 goals down? We need more of that. The constant groaning every time a player makes a mistake is awful to hear. My local MLS team has a better atmosphere.

I'm a diehard Liverpool fan and love the badge on the shirt but i have to admit Liverpool is a massive francise/buisness and it doesnt give a shite about local fans. I honestly hate the concept of LFC but love the club if that makes sense. And on the other hand i sat next to a cockney LFC fan who hadnt missed a home game for over 20 years, drove a 400 mile round trip to home games even 8pm kick offs when he was back in work the next morning at 8am. For me he was a real diehard fan, even though not from the city he showed more desire and passion than alot of local fans ever will.

Sadly this is the way football as a whole is going. I'm 24 and I have been a Liverpool supporter for 13 years. I was able to attend the Liverpool Chelsea match this past February and it was one of the highlights of my life. In Toronto, Canada I watch every single Liverpool game, whether at work, on my phone or at 6am in the morning at the Liverpool Supporters Club Bar. Sadly I cannot go to the games every week. There are tens of thousands of Liverpool Supporters around the world who are passionate about Liverpool's Success, Culture and Future. It is important for the supports in Liverpool to feel welcome in their home city, but sadly times are changing and Money is a large part of every football club. The fact the we are not selling Coutinho speaks loudly about the clubs intentions of maintaining the integrity of our great club and return it to our former glory. YNWA is ingrained in my head every day. I sing, whistle and hum it at least twice a day and sing it passionately at the beginning and end of every match. To me it is about joining together as a family and supporting the club in which we all love. Long Live Liverpool

There is an important point at the heart of this, that is difficult to resolve: what is a fan? Is someone who used to go every week, and now lives away, suddenly a lesser fan - a follower - now they moved away and can't go? Are the couple who say they are disenfranchised and go despite the club, really fans of the team/club, or are they fans of what the atmosphere used to be like? Whilst fans continue to factionalise themselves based on some subjective value of commitment, then - in my opinion - nothing will ever be resolved in terms of prices and atmosphere. Perhaps we must all accept that times, and people, change. Habits change. I'm sure there are those who, way back when home/away segregation really began to take hold, bemoaned it and the effect it had on atmosphere. There will be those who will bemoan future changes. Plus ca change... Yet does any of that change how much an individual wants their team to win? Is that even what being a fan is?
@TheGiantKillers
@TheGiantKillers 7 жыл бұрын
All fans have to accept certain truths about 21st Century Football. It needed to be gentrified [forget the rose tinted specs aspect, the atmosphere in the 80s in the First Division was downright poisonous 90% of the time. The threat of violence, people pissing into their rolled up football programmes and it hitting the people in front, the crush, the being treated like dirt. Yeah great days they were.] New stadiums do however need to be sectioned. A dedicated die hard home core section The dedicated safe standing section, the now normal dedicated away section the family ssection. But it's vital that other elements are catered for. Like it or not [and I appreciate but have never understood it, especially with Everton] the Premier League is global and the best teams transcend their locality. A successful team is a global club not a local one and the local fan has to remember that a fan from the other side of the world might have to spend £500 plus just to get to one game. Surely that deserves respect for their support. In addition, Football is a tourist attraction in the 21st Century. I myself am a Football tourist to some extent, having taken in games at Barca, Bayern, PSG for example. Grounds need to have sections for the [so called] gentrified fan who isn't gonna hurl insults and abuse at the players, The demand for mixed sections is also growing as modern Footie families can often have divided loyalties and want to sit together to support both clubs safely. I recently took my nephew to watch his team Tottenham and [as an Evertonian] had to stand with the Spurs fans. I shouldn't need to have to sit on my hands when my team score [as they did twice] These are big stadiums we're building. Surely every type of fan can be accommodated.

It's nice to be in the size league the MLS is because we don't have international fans and tourists ruining the club and making it to were the club panders to these people. I'm sorry to the loyal and traditional fans of these European clubs. I follow Valencia too in Europe and I love them, but I will only ever truly support Sporting KC. You should follow other teams, but realistically you should only ever support your home town team, and what separates these clubs is the idea of which fan is more important. Your home town loyal fans or the traveling tourists. Luckily for me Kansas City is a City of loyalty and passion not of sellouts and turning your back on those who've been loyal: aka: Manchester, London clubs, Barcelona, Madrid, Munich, Seattle, and LA

I guess every fan wants the club to grow and be successful, but fans want to feel this is their club and their community. In this day and age it's impossible to be successful unless you turn your club into a global brand and get money from all over the world. I've traveled for a game (League cup against Spurs) just to sit at Anfield in the famous cop and sang as much as I could and got into the experience as much as I could. I understand the concern of the local fans and I guess it's more to do with the ownership than with the actual travelling fans, but for someone like me it meant the world seeing the team, fans, stadium and city in the flesh. I hope there's a proper resolution and a compromise is reached for the sake of the local community, but please understand - even though fans like me have supported this club from a far we're still very passionate about this club and it has brought me personally a lot of joy and grief.

So what if people go only once in a while. Some people cannot afford to go to every game. So what if someone takes a picture of a throw in. They are not doing anything wrong to you. Saying someone isn't a true or proper fan because they don't go as much is not fair. I'm not a Liverpool fan but it happens everywhere now, people move about a lot more nowadays than they used too, and people saying all seater has ruined stadiums, no it hasn't. It has made it more appealing and enjoyable. Folks need to just chill out and worry about their own enjoyment and realise that these people are fans too. GET OVER IT.

the radio city fella got that spot on we are definitely targeting younger people as a club because we've got a different price for young adults to the price for normal adults In my good 10 years of experience watching everton only once have I properly seen signs of tourism at the club. That was against Chelsea the other day, which I imagine helped to lure these people in. A Chinese couple came and sat behind me, didn't speak a word of English and definitely were at their firsot game because they didn,t have a clue when to stand up get out of peoples way etc. At first I thought right, maybe they will actually come and act as the twefth man as Everton fans do. Then I saw their phone come out... I thought ok maybe they don't make it to many games and they want a picture for the memories. They got that picture followed by many many more, with their phone annoyingly close to me by the way. It started to really get on my nerves if I'm honest. The woman also was singing, but not chanting like she should have been, she was HARMONISING WITH THE CHELSEA FANS ASIF SHE WAS SOME SORT OF WEIRD A CAPELLA CHOIR!!! They left during an Everton attack to go and get food/drink. Wrst part is, in front of me were a father and his son, not sure where they were from but they didn't talk English. Chelsea were on the attack, right in front of us and instead of screaming to cuco martina to actually put some effort in and close a ball down or put the Chelsea attack off, they whipped their phones out and started to film. So there I am terrified of losing a hard earned point against the champions in the last couple of minutes surrounded by foreigners filming the Chelsea players with a smile on their face. I have sat all over the ground, only in the family enclosure once or twice. The only foreigners who you see anywhere else in the ground are welsh or irish, which are countries the club has always had strong connections to and will produce passionate fans who go to every game. Only in the family enclosure have I ever seen anyone get their camera out and film an opposition attack. Spoke to my dad who has brought me up to be a more old fashioned, passionate Everton fan as he was. He said it was because since Hillsborough (not blaming the tragedy by the way) football has had to be more family orientated and that means there is less people going to support the team and more people going because it might be a fun day out Makes me sick to think that I can't get a season ticket (the waiting list is too long and my dad got ill and only recently have I been old enough and trustworthy enough to go on my own - I have managed to get tickets to most of the home games this season either by buying them or through connections) beacause theres people going the match towatch football. But obviously just watch, not support the team or yenno, create an atmosphere I wasn't expecting to rant on quite like that but it boils my blood this sort of thing

coming from Norway, I've only been to Anfield once, and I had a great time! I had tickets to the Kop and I was standing up during the whole game, and I sang so much I didn't have a voice the day after. During all the 90 minutes I never took a picture, because I dislike people thinking that a football stadium is a tourist attraction

Yeah I've read somewhere that the Norwegian Liverpool Fan Club has approximately 10'000 or so tickets to each game at Anfield. And I did notice when I went there that many were talking in Norwegian (even in Manchester where we lived). But nonetheless, whenever I go to a new country, I always feel like a tourist (like I don't really fit properly in, and that I still have much more to learn about the places I go). In my hometown there is a lot of tourism during the summer. There's almost twice as many tourists visiting during summer, than there are people living here! And it's also pretty easy to know who's a tourist (mostly because they just walk around and take pictures, but hey, why shouldn't they)

Tranmere have a passionate but small fan base in Norway, they go to every game. I also met the Dorset Whites at Southend away game who followed Tranmere around. Maybe it was an ironic art movement, but they were there on a Friday night in October.

Marine, Prescot Cables, Tranmere, Southport, AFC Liverpool, heck even the woman's team if you can't support a team with another badge.....plenty of non league teams to follow, you will find that fans are equally as passionate about the game and you will feel part of the club rather than just another number.

Ofc tourism makes the atmosphere worse and ofc people are going to be more passive at the games when they are only there once or twice during their life time and they want to saviour the memories that season ticket holders can sort of take for granted. However since football clubs nowadays are run as companies, the tourism and the extra cash these tourist pays at each game is vital for the club to stay competitive. Liverpool does however have the history and the culture around the club which makes even the foreign fans more engaged and more aware of the importance of the supporters than other big clubs in the premier league. Compare the tourists at Anfield to those at Old Trafford, for instance and I think you would find that the foreign Liverpool supporters are more educated about the club than the United supporters. Also, since the employment rate in Liverpool is lower than the employment rate in manchester, tourism is even more important in Liverpool and the extra money spent is not only beneficial for the clubs but also for the city as a whole. The lowered standard of atmosphere in the premier league is natural but it is vital for foreign supporters to take responsibility at the games to not be passive and know the club they support or else Liverpool will inevitably lose its identity as has happened some what for the Manchester and London clubs.

Imagine you couldn’t get in your local church or mosque and you weren’t even wanted there. You should be able to physically queue up and get a ticket. It’s not fair that someone who has Liverpool in their blood and lives near the stadium has the same chance of getting a ticket as someone the other side of the world. My season ticket seat was moved from row 25 on the halfway line to row 78 in the corner to make way for the tourists, and it became more expensive. Imagine the Kop being full of tourists taking photos - the atmosphere would be awful. Liverpool is a ‘global club’ because of its local fans and history.

Its really sad to know this is what Liverpool fans think about other fans. I thought this club "means more". I'm from India and I support Liverpool and there are thousands of LFC fans here. To think that only those who live in Merseyside can support is false. For most of us its a dream to come to Anfield and it only happens once in our lives. I also support my local team Kerala Blasters in the ISL. And if you think that only local supporters should go to Anfield, why do you have foreign players. Make a team of Homegrown talents then.
@TrevorSteven
@TrevorSteven 7 жыл бұрын
Football teams belong to their geographical areas. People can go on about globalisation & how great it is to have overseas, and there's nothing wrong with having out of town fans. But ultimately the priority should be the local support. Otherwise the team just becomes a franchise, based in an area almost by name only. LFC fans can mock EFC all they like. EFC may not have won anything for 22 years, but LFC have won 1 trophy in the last 12 years. Hardly a modern trophy winning culture. EFC is far more connected with the city & local area through the amazing work done by EFC in the Community. LFC does absolutely nothing for the local area or people. There's no affordable tickets. There's the infamous Anfield season ticket waiting list only because LFC would rather sell 20000+ tickets on a game by game basis to tourists rather than local fans. It's all about making money to FSG, which again is fine, as long as you don't hide from this. You can make money & not care about the local community, or you can have affordable accessible tickets & not make as much money. You can't do both.

TrevorSteven you wrote this 2 years ago and all I have to say is look at Liverpool now. Without the global fan base Liverpool is just another Huddersfield. No Becker (Brazilian) no VVD (Dutch), no Salah (Egyption) and no interest in the club to be able to buy any of these players. Football revenue is predominantly used for wages and facilities, the owners get a dividend if sufficient profit is made at the end of the year. Without us global fans LFC is nothing. Careful what you wish for.

Liverpool haven't won the title for almost 30 years ( hopefully that run will end this season) but, have had amazing success in European competitions, no coincidence that the atmosphere for these games is usually a lot better & amongst the best in the country for the big ties.

So they've done a whole documentary on why the atmospheres gone out of top flight English football with out even mentioning the obvious solution to the problem. Look at germany, look at cletic, safe standing CAN BE DONE and it would mean that a stadium like anfield would be able to hold an extra 15/20,000 which would dramatically lower the prices of tickets and bring back that those great atmospheres everybody was talking about.

I am a fan of Italian football. People laugh at the stadiums there. I understand that. However the stadium atmosphere around the country is still quite good. Compared to other countries the ultras get relatively much freedom. And a team like Udinese who got a new stadium went from bad atmosphere too even worse with the new stadium. I have said it before and I say it again. There is not one thing they can't ruin with time. Especially when money gets too important.
