Great video! And thanks for mentioning the 80's for us Everton fans, it's very rare this gets mentioned. Just as a side note, you should have shown how close the two stadiums are, it's very rare that this occurs in any rivalry. Excellent video. Great point about Everton losing out on success in Europe due to the Heysel tragedy . West Ham also missed out on European football in 1986 because of the ban. As a West Ham fan you must do a video on the Rivalry between West Ham and Millwall. If you haven't already . It might not be the biggest derby in the world but it certainly is one of the more notorious . We hate SPURS most though . Sweet Bruv✊

Merseyside has no official title but the term Merseyside Derby first appears in print in 1938. Prior to that it was called the 'roll off the tongue' local derby between Everton and Liverpool [vice versa depending who was at home]. The term derby itself is first used in 1914.

I heard a 'theory' on the Everton 'pink' strip. A benefactor to the club was a local butcher who along with other perks (he no doubt supplied the team with meat) undertook duties such as washing the kit. Everton at some point briefly wore white (or predominantly white shirts) a trainee butchers staff member was tasked with washing the strip but managed to include a few bloodied aprons in with the load. The result, not surprisingly left a light pink hue to the shirts. What with cost etc, they played out the remainder of the season in these tainted shirts. It's at this point they adopted a theme on that colour for their first choice shirts for a couple of seasons. EFC have adopted a 'salmon' or 'pink' coloured shirt at various points in the 1990's/2000's as an away/change strip, no doubt in homage to this early period in their history. Please don't shoot the messenger! - I got this tale from a life long Everton supporter many years ago.

So your gonna spend over a minute talking about Heysel, but give a brief line to how Hillsborough United the entire city, not bring up how Everton and Liverpool fans have stood together to fight what they see as injustices not just surrounding Hillsborough but also things such as poverty in the city, which is ultimately what gives us the edge, I will happily say I hate a lot of Everton players and a small minority of fans, but we unite on the key issues and we fight for what we believe in together, we don't let our clubs get in the way of the things in our city that is wider than football

That's fine and I agree that it brought the fans together (as I said in the video briefly) but this is ultimately a video (and series) about the root of the RIVALRY - not the root of what brought the fans together. Nice one!! It's good to hear the "whole story". As you can see, I'm an Everton fan. Lots of people don't get the whole Derby thing and how it can effect the way people behave. I was a match going Everton fan through the whole Heysel disaster & it's aftermath & Hillsborough & it's aftermath. It is true that Everton were undoubtedly one of the two best teams in Europe during the mid-80's and would've certainly won The European Cup at least once during that time. The worst of it was LFC "fans" laughing. That's what caused the rift to split even wider. You are right that Hillsborough helped to mend the gap (we all, Blue & Red, knew somebody either killed or injured or was just at the game.) The difference is that we all shared the grief of Hillsborough - it wasn't a situation caused by either club.....it was something that WAS DONE TO 96 football fans - our families, our friends our brothers & sisters. So.....the current relationship would best be described as "complicated'!
@Willo_16475 жыл бұрын
Your right with every bit of that Phil.. The only thing I can say is any LFC fan that laughed about that situation was either a moron or an unfeeling inhumane git.. And yes it is complicated but we stand together as a city for everything we've been through, our friends, our families and the 96.. As the granddaughter of an Evertonian and the daughter of a Liverpool supporter I did end up a red but learned so much about Everton growing up.. Oh btw!! Good luck today in the Derby #YNWA 👍

This video needs more emphasis on Hillsborough. The incident rocked the entire country and Britian to boot. More light was put on Heysel, they should of at least been reported in equal measure considering the circumstances. Many of the fans who perished were friends and family of Everton supporters and as such many Everton fans were affected by the Hillsborough tragedy just the same. This definitely needs more relevance in this video. By the way, I'm enjoying the channel nonetheless. 👍

BD Wednesday 100%, I remember my grandad telling me about how it truly crippled Everton as a side. He went to games around this time and told me about how many of our greatest players left due to a lack of European football. When the ban was lifted many other teams regained some class in new players they brought in but Everton never really did which led to Everton becoming a side which didn't return to its former glory. If not for this ban then being an Everton fan could be a lot different to what it is now, we could be a possible top 4 team now if we kept our good players as good players attract new talent, and that new talent will eventually attract more new talent and so forth. Unfortunately, that's just how football goes but my family has continued to support the club- there isn't a family member that I know of that has not supported Everton. Hopefully we get a good result tomorrow!

The reasons for the split in the club were complex. Rent was a minor issue. The Liberal minded Everton F.C. Committee wanted a more democratic structure of a wide spread of shares amongst the fans. They saw the club as central to the community and an influence in behaviour and sobriety. Houlding, the Everton chairman, a Tory supporter, wanted a small group of owners, owning the majority of the shares giving returns in the corporate model. The control would be in the hands and dictates of a few people. The Everton Committee distrusted Houlding's motives, gradually both falling out with each other. The flashpoint was when Orrell, the owner of the adjacent land, who Everton also paid rent to, wanted to run an access road for his land through Everton's new main stand. The covenants stated he could. The committee said Houlding knew about this stitching the club up - he negotiated the rental of Anfield. The Committee then decided they should leave Anfield.
