Goals and highlights from Liverpool's 1991/92 season, taken from the official season review video. I have edited it slightly to add in some games that were missing on the original.
Thanks to eurocup dofootball for the Kuusysi Lahti away goal footage.

This was my first full season supporting Liverpool, and I have very fond memories of it to be honest. Souness hadn't quite done too much damage yet, and on our day we were still an incredibly entertaining and decent side to watch. The FA Cup run was one of the most exciting and eventful cup runs I've still ever watched unfold ... and back then the competition still felt massive. SO many times it looked like we were going out ... but it was in those games that I discovered that Liverpool have something special about them. A never-say-die spirit that we witness year after year in big games. The rest of the 90s were a blur of bad signings and a lack of consistency ... but this season I liked.

just read ur msg and iiked it ur spot on with everything about liverpool fc and tge fa cup run was amazing but liverpool made it very awkward for them selfs at home when i read ur msg it just reminded me of wen i first started supporting them my mother loved them and always wanted to see them in the flesh but she had 2 strokes about 2 years before this season 1991/92, she was very poorly mate and i was only 13 years old i looked after her for about 20 years i kept saying too her mum u still can go even though ur in a wheelchair but unfortunately she was never the same after her strokes she wouldn't go out of the house it was that bad she never left the house for years the only time she went outside was in the garden abd and that was only for about an hour we would watch the games together on TV back in the day when the games were on normal tv granada tv till this day i wish i could of took her to anfield i never got the chance to take her i promised her i would scatter her ashers at the KOP End goal mouth and in the standing KOP she use to say too me liverpool never let us down do they lee lol she passed away about 8 years ago i haven't scattered her ashers at anfield yet but i am going too 100% i loved the eighties and especially the nineties football there was something about it all i the fans the stadiums the kits the pitchers they played on i started going to the games in the 1993/94 season i went too 11 games tge first one was the 2_0 win against sheffield Wednesday first game of the season, i couldnt go too the last game wen liverpool played norwich at anfield the last game of the standing KOP because i had too be with my mother, glad you enjoyed urself wen u first started watching liverpool sorry for the long msg i just get a little carried away anyway godbless you 😉👊🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏👍

Only two things to remember from the dismal 1992 Centenary year was the title decider match against United, prematurely denying them the League title with Ian Rush finally breaking his duck against them after being denied for so long, and winning the Cup Final.

the man utd game was proper messed up.united had chances and so did liverpool. could have gone either way. but overall the 91-92 season was dreadful. the fa cup win was beyond lucky. sunderland was a poor oppostion. portsmouth should have won the semi final.

Great upload. Probably would have gone closer in the league if it hadn’t been for the injuries. Also might have convinced Souness not to do so much chopping and changing with the squad. Some baffling decisions and signings were still to come!!

And not having a long term strategy in signing quality players who were comfortable on the ball, like Liverpool had always done. There was a turnover of players ten years earlier - probably Case and McDermott were sold on too soon, but then Bob Paisley could make a deft signing ready in waiting or draft a player or two from the reserves, changing the team gradually. Souness did make some good signings, but all too often they were in and out of the team through injury. He also wasted large sums of money on rubbish, certainly not of the Liverpool mould. Selling Beardsley the way he did was criminal
@martynstembridge7714

Beardsley was a CRAZY decision ... but apparently he was a bit gobby behind the scenes, and someone like Souness was always going to dump players he couldn't control. The following summer he also sold both Houghton and Saunders ... arguably his two best players of this season! The guy just made it harder for himself over and over.

Yep...We had clearly appointed the wrong guy as manager. 6th place was unacceptable. Futhermore. After his triple bypass operation, and then giving a interview to the sun about his operation on the 3rd anniversary of hillsborough. Souness should've done the honourable thing and resigned

The format was a bit odd separating the cup games together but it was an enjoyable season winning the FA Cup which for me was the most important trophy since I got into football in 1989.

distantvoices Oh yes I totally understand what you’re saying but change has to come slow and gradual especially when something that’s been so successful also I think Hillsborough played A major part as Ray houghton said in an interview how many major trophies did Liverpool win after that. I just think Souness came in when the club was still very much in the grieving process and upset a lot of the senior players like I said changing things too quickly he wanted to improve the senior players and get the best out of them but you can’t teach an old dog new tricks he would have been better off teaching the younger guys who are coming through and changing the culture slowly players like John Barnes Whelan even Steve nicol it was a shock to the system they were doing to preseasons as the players have written on their books they would do to preseasons when you’ve been used to doing things a certain way most of your life it’s very difficult to adjust hence all the injuries. Plus he was too keen to get rid of too many senior players to quick Beardsley had another five years at the top level left Staunton had a whole career. Anyway always like to hear other peoples thoughts on it

There were plenty of home league attendances in 82/83 and 83/84 less than 30,000. Maybe 20,000 is a slight exaggeration, but attendances in the 20,000s were not that uncommon then as unemployment hit hard.

The season where Graeme Souness got rid of Peter Beardsley and Steve McMahon by replacing them with Dean Saunders and Michael Thomas, and signed Mark Wright as a long term replacement for Alan Hansen who retired in 1990. Ray Houghton was still there, as was Bruce Grobbelaar, Steve Nicol, , Jan Molby, Ronnie Whelan, John Barnes and Ian Rush from great teams of late 1980s. Never challenged for League Championship which was won by Leeds United but won FA Cup again.

What Souness did to Liverpool was terrible, only part of the team that needed work was the Defence - Plus reading in Dalglish autobiographey he tried getting his job back after a month, things would have different if they had said yes... not saying united would not have grown as that team were on the march, but liverpools decline would not of been to drastic so quickly, but hindsight is a great thing.

The 99/00 and 00/01 season reviews are uploaded now. The 90s ones were frustrating seasons, and season review videos are a pain to upload because they're long and often need to be uploaded several times as games are randomly blocked by the premier league or UEFA.

Being a good substitute and helping to support the new generation at that time would be something more appropriate You must remember John Branes got seriously injured in 1991 took a long break and the comeback was never the same again, so were Ian Rush and Steve Nicol as they got older. I just thought it was interesting that 3 of Liverpool's best ever players didn't merit a mention. Barnes's career changing Achilles injury was in the summer of 1992. He had lots of injuries in 1991/92 but was still top quality when he was fit. Same with Rush. Nicol was still better than Keown by then. Did Staunton ever play centre back? Maybe towards the end of his career, and I've just forgotten.
@taylormartin782

@@DaveWallerLFC i agree with you But I want John Branes, who was the league's best player in 1989-90, during that time I think he's as good as Messi, Rush also. So I'm trying to add players for the future. Steve Staunton, when Houllier first came in he played at centre-back sometimes, I remember him doing really well, I think selling him. That's a big mistake for Graeme Souness, so I'm going to change my starting XI for 1991-92: Gobbela, of course I still trust him: Rob Jones, my favorite right-back, Steve Staunton, left-back, central defender, Steve Nicol alongside Martin Keown, midfield, Steve McManaman, right, Ray Houghton, left, two midfielders: Roy Keane and Matthew Le tisier. Two forwards, Peter Beadsley and Alan Shearer, with Ian Rush interpolating, and waiting for 'The God' Robbie fowler ready I think it should be enough to bring back the trophy after losing it to Arsenal in 1990-91.
@DaveWallerLFC
@DaveWallerLFC Жыл бұрын
I don't really understand what you're doing with John Barnes. If you're picking a team in the summer of 1991 he's still the best player in the country. So he's either first name on the team sheet or you're selling him to pay for the other players you want. With hindsight, selling him might not have been the worst decision, as injuries meant he was never able to sustain his best level. But it would have been massively unpopular at the time. And having him as sub to McManaman, who had only played a couple of times at that point, makes no sense.
