RIP Paul Mariner, my hero as a kid. Town should have won the league in 81. Played 20 more games than Villa who went on to win it. We basically run out of legs. Got the UEFA Cup though.

Big changes in tbe Liveroool squad after this season although a first league cup and third European cup came back to Anfield. So many teams closely matched that season following on from the 70s where a different winner of the fa cup every season makes you realise those were the days my friends.

I remember sitting in the Kemlyn road stand that day, Ray Clements last season for Liverpool and John Wark yet to come to Liverpool, although David Johnson was ex Ipswich...what ever happened to Avie Cohen ???

Actually remember Alan Hansan rugby tackling our striker at portman road from behind when last man! Wasn't even booked. I liked Liverpool and their style of play back then but certainly took advantage of some very lenient refereeing.

He clearly clipped his leg. Kenny was never a diver. Nowhere near the ball, the defender.

Just looked at that foul again. What is also remarkable is that Mariner doesn't roll over six times feigning agony. He just gets up and gets on with the game. Nor do any players immediately rush to surround the ref, shouting and brandishing imaginary yellow cards.
