Just wait. We’ll get to next summer and the narrative will be ‘This isn’t the right summer for us. We are looking at the next summer to make a big move’ Why does Trent resign for a club who is making the clear statement that we are just satisfied with competing for top four when he could sign for the worlds biggest clubs who make statements that they actually want to win things?

Do we not think Trent may be stalling to see where the ambition is from the owners? If these owners carry on overstating and under performing in terms of transfers? Then who could actually blame Trent for thinking “what’s the point”🤷

FSG are always going to leave the club a few players short of consistent success. I wouldn't blame him if he left, it's probably the sensible thing to do. Wasting your career hoping the pikey owners step up to the plate, is a pointless exercise. History shows 4th biggest turnover in world football, 11th highest net spend in the prem, that will only continue .

I really think we could be in a spot of trouble here. If we 'wait a year', we might be needing a replacement for any of Salah, Robertson, Van Dijk, Alisson if that Georgian lad has an unexpectedly poor season, or Arnold if he just wants a change, which I doubt. Thinking we can just wait means we could miss out on the top 4 now. And signing players becomes that bit harder and you're doing it to cover more than a couple of players. Gomez going because we've unsettled him and not signing someone would be genuinely appalling.
@JohnTravena
@JohnTravena 21 күн бұрын
Surely they do it. They wouldn’t be sending out the young Dutch center back if they didn’t have a replacement. At this point we need 1 or 2 center backs if we keep Joe Gomez.

@@JohnTravena the only reason we needed so many in the past was because a few of them had terrible injury records. Gomez, Konate and Matip all had their fair share. I think we are a tad light now but only because two of those are still here. I think if we were to replace Gomez, it would have to be someone we'd have fewer injury concerns over. Every transfer is a gamble though.

Liverpool did not "destabilise" Joe Gomez...Joe Gomez apparently indicated pre-season he was open to leaving to get more regular 1sr team football at CB. Van Den Berg made it clear he didn't want to stay to be a squad player. If players make it clear they want to leave then makes sense to move them on at the best price possible.

I'm with the fella who thinks we are more thinking about next summer. I'm thinking at least 1, maybe 2 of those 3 will leave. It's well known that it's Trent's dream to be club captain at Liverpool so i think, with him being so young still, they will maybe push the boat out for him. I think they already know whether VVD and/or Salah are staying beyond next season or not. They also have previous of not offering players over 30 with the contracts the players actually want (Gini a great example). The word 'opportunistic' was used by Hughes and also by Slot. That, to me, means they will buy this summer BUT only if the right player is available at the right price. The fella in the beard and his view on the goalie, i'm not with him on this. This young goalie is quite possibly a generational talent and to me, Liverpool buying him now for around £30mill represents better business than buying him in 2 years time for double that or more. Ali cost us over £60mill and he is a legend for us. If they have the chance to buy someone for half that who could be as good as Ali....then they simply have to buy him. If VDB and Gomez both go this window, i'd bet we will sign at least 1 x CB before the window ends. They will already know who that CB is, we just need to wait and see.

To me it looks like they have a medium term (i.e. 3-4 year) plan. What's become apparent (to me, at least) is that "opportunistic in the market" means either getting "value" (i.e. Zubimendi release clause) or selling squad/youth players for good money. They are not building a squad that can win the big trophies - at least not this, and probably not next, season. What they are doing is ensuring LFC can remain in the top 4 and keep bringing in the CL money. The proof is in the pudding. The only time we spent big was when we rinsed Barca for Coutinho. Meanwhile, the wage bill is lower than it has been for at least 5-6 years... I think FSG are quite happy for LFC to win the odd big trophy every 7-8 years and appease the fans, while retaining the value of their investment. Again, the proof is in the pudding. So, it will be 3rd/4th again this year, Quarter final in the CL and probably a run/final in one of the domestic cups. Please prove me wrong...

Imo the more Liverpool win, the more top players they have, the bigger the value of the club as far as FSG are concerned, we keep mentioning the Coutinhio money which led to us buying Alison & VVD, but we also spent £60m on Szoboszlai, £65m on Nunez, £54m on Keita, over £35m for McAllister, Gravenberch- so we are spending, also keep in mind FSG don't put money into the club but they don't take money out either, its the club that sets the transfer budget as per the clubs income and within FFP rules - John W Henry isn't calling Hughes telling him how much to spend

I don't think Virgil's, Mo's or Trent's agents would be doing their jobs properly if they had signed contracts now. They don't know how good we will be under Slot or whether we will strengthen the squad so I think it was probably always more likely that they will make decisions around November. Personally I think the next week is absolutely huge in what happens over the next few years and I cannot guess which way it will go. On the one hand there doesn't appear much noise about any signings and the noises are quite downbeat but on the other the last thing Liverpool will want, even if they are, is to look desperate. In late May none of us had any idea how close we were to signing Gordon and seizing on Newcastle's desperation,who knows what is going on now. Personally I would like to believe that they are waiting on teams to buy replacements or playing hardball. I am not really confident in the idea they are saving up money for next summer as if Virg etc go then the market know you are desperate and you overpay anyway. Personally I would like us to go for Branthwaite and Gordon. I thought it perhaps most revealing that neither Everton nor the Branthwaite camp said "no way" when asked about links with LFC. If I were LFC, if I didn't already, I would think that Everton feel they cannot say no and the player maybe open to the move. Bringing him in now improves your chances with Virg and the others imo. You can tell Virg you can balance his game time and so he lasts longer, you show him your ambition, you weaken his negotiating position and so likely have to pay him less and you ensure he doesn't leave for nothing. Worth paying an extra £15m for Branthwaite. Personally feel his signing would be epitome of opportunistic too. Similar situation for Gordom and the Mo conversation. 2 years left on Gordon's contract and with them buying Guehl will they want to risk Gordon going for a lit less next summer? Especially if PSR may still be a concern. I really hope that we are active this week and that these sales are to clear the decks and give them the chance to go big now. The landscape could look very different next summer depending on our season, players wanting to go or not and stuff outside our control - what if City win their legal cases? Will PSR be a thing? Will the likes of Newcastle or any club be open to sales like they maybe now? If Everton sort out a takeover will there be any chance of us getting what feels like a free run at Branthwaite? Will Barcelona be in the same mess they are now and need to sell players to register signings? Will Chelsea be desperate to offload players? For all these reasons I consider that there could be big opportunities to be "opportunistic" in the next week and waiting until next summer is therefore actually extremely high risk, not low risk. Perhaps the outcome of the first legal case is already known and that is influencing FSGs actions now. Hopefully not and we will be very active in the next week, I imagine we will know tomorrow (when Arne is grilled) or perhaps at the latest by Wednesday as I don't see LFC doinig deals getting done from Thursday onwards. It feels something very big is upon us. I

Surely at this point - the cost of renewing two of the three is preferrable to having to source multiple world class replacements? They might need to break the wage structure, but the alternative is continuing the season with a squad lacking the depth required to compete in multiple competitions. What happens if we don't get into the CL? We're creating problems because of overly rigid restrictions on wages and measured output vs cost. I am sure there are potentially better "value" options available, they may also be younger and therefore offer potential resale but we need to compete, not in 2-3 years but now and they need to accept the situation they have inherited and adjust the approach to keep the squad at the required level.

Here’s my hot take: Liverpool use Van Den Berg in an exchange deal + £15-20m to take Topsoba from Leverkusen (we made enquiries about him last season). He’s a big, strong, ball playing, left footed CB that can play on both sides of a 2 or 3, so he definitely fits our requirements. They also agree to give Newcastle a free run at Guéhi to keep them sweet for a future deal for Gordon.

Gutted about Sepp VDB, actually. If we were told right now that we're looking at a 22 year old Dutch CB, who's rapid, best in the Bundesliga in the air, statistically the best under 23 in the league... we'd be absolutely buzzing!! Our fans suffer from being so obsessed with transfers that we never give our own a chance. The minds were made up before he even stepped on the pitch pre-season. Same as Carvalho. Both of them were 2 of our better performers, but they were never going to be given a fair chance. To me, that just doesn't sit right. To me, if you fight for your place and you perform higher than many others in the squad, you should be given a chance. Unfair. I think we may regret the Sepp one. He could easily be a VERY good CB over the next few years. The thing is, watch this space. The club will bring in another CB of a similar quality or worse, and you'll all be happier with him because he's new. He's really never been given a chance, and the club has just decided they prefer the profit considering the transfer fee.

He's got a LOT to do to make up for his childish antics last season. The fact he removed all Liverpool content, failed to applaud Klopp, and disrespected every single fan and coaching staff. That type of temperament is exactly why he's so erratic on and off the pitch. If he could somehow harness that aggression and energy and apply even just 20% more composure, he'd be a 40-goal striker. He hit the post 15 times last season! Add that to the fact some keepers produced MOTM performances against him. He could easily have been 40+ if not for inches either way. He's a crazy specimen because there's just as big of a chance of him scoring 5 goals as there is him scoring 50. It's madness.

genuinely this much over-thinking and handwringing and deliberation before every single signing is just not sustainable. edwards has come back from a sabbatical but the football world is hyper-competitive and has moved past his 'model'. at some point this club needs to stop marinating in its own thought too much as the present slip by them. we havent won any big trophy since 2020, we are massively overestimating the smartness of the backroom staff here. every big club has a competent data team. ultimately you have to bring in players in positions of need. also not being able to retain the big 3 is disastrous, they are 3 out of out 4 world class players. why accept 2/3? Trent is Trent, but Virgil and Salah are absolutely happy and are integral to this club's core, not to mention the best in their positions. We should absolutely not letting them go. without them we drop 3 league positions and are suddenly scrambling for top 4. what a total waste of everything Klopp has built over the last 9 years.

Go for the title this season as City could get points deducted which, bizarrely help Arsenal, who are the one team who didnt lose out due to their cheating.

This club are acting like amateurs. I won't be wasting anymore money on football. We've turned into top 4 arsenal. Why Klopp left, not that you ever speak the truth regarding this club. Ridiculous lack of depth. You never got the honest truth out of these platforms with privlaged access.

Obvs hope we don’t loose all 3 players but makes no sense to replace next summer when every other clubs knows we’re kind of desperate and play hardball

Marc Guéhi isn't good with the ball at his feet. I can't see him being a good fit for Slot system. I'm not sure of the veracity of the interest from Liverpool for him. I think is just paper talk to drive is transfer fee up.
