Such a memorable night. The Kop sang it's heart out. I took a work mate there (a Plymouth Fan) and he lost his voice he was shouting so much!

Even in the early days of the Souness regime I thought they had no chance after losing the 1st leg 2-0. One of Souness' finer moments as manager, I guess. I did find it strange that there were quite a number of empty seats that night, what more when this is only the 2nd home European match at Anfield since 1985, and considering the strength of the opposition and the circumstances....

It's amazing to think that Liverpool took almost 10 years after the ban was lifted to finally win a European trophy under Gerard Houllier in the UEFA cup final. Also it's interesting to see that Anfield was much smaller in those days.

It was the first time that Liverpool had overturned a 2 goal deficit from the first leg of a European tie. The second time, was Barcelona 4-0

I just searched up this game. How things have changed. There wasn't much to shout about during this period so when there was a European night when we put on a performance it was a treat. No disrespect but Auxerre weren't exactly a giant from Europe

Probably Souness' best night as Liverpool manager. Remember Mike Marsh playing like superman that night.
