In those early days “ The Mersey boy”, I thought he got loads of deserved credit as he was such an exciting footballer and did extraordinary things. He and Ian Rush absolutely revitalised the team in the 1981/82 season. I think it was in later years that he was unsung when he did the job of sweeping up around of the defence as Souness had done in a more muscular way before. The players always said that he did things in training that none of them could match. In the early days we used to see them on a Saturday as in the League cup finals of 82 and 83 and the Championship clincher against Tottenham in 82 amongst othersbut after that he did an equally brilliant but less spectacular job. He was still capable of laying on the winner as he did for Ian Rush in the 1986 FA Cup final.

The pace was incredible, the full 120 mins. Yet, the players (LFC) were so good that they still were able to do magic with the ball. Shooting was much better than nowadays. No weak links at the time!

Those were the days when The Football League Cup Final was played on a Saturday at 3pm (no live t.v. just recorded highlights on the Sunday afternoon). That Liverpool F.C. all red kit lasted for 18 years - November 1964 to May 1976 the O neck and August 1976 to May 1982 the V neck, from then on they varied the design of the kit.

@Ryan M : You should include the 70s too. From '75-'85 there were 11 finals in the European cup and English teams contested all but two.Of the other 9 English teams won 7 with Liverpool and Leeds both losing one each. The seven winners were Liverpool(4),Nottm Forest(2) and Aston Villa(1).The only real underperformers were the England team itself, and perhaps that is why many forget how good the players were.Although we shouldn't forget, according to Man Utd fans, football only started in 1992,it didn't exist before then.

Have been watching lots of old clips lately and truly believe that today's Liverpool players could learn a lot by watching the games from the great era of the 70's and 80's. The calm- and smartness in the attack play and finishing. However, quiestion is if not the defense play and perhaps also players have developed some since then.

Two great teams here. The Liverpool equaliser was the first goal Spurs conceded in that year's competition. The defeat was their first ever at Wembley. There was talk of the Quadruple that year, after success in the previous season's FA Cup, and Burkinshaw's over ambitious desire to "make people stop talking about the double team." The squad was too small for that, of course. I always felt that this team was capable of beating anybody, certainly in the country, and perhaps even in Europe, but the increasing volume of games, injury and sheer tiredness got to them. They retained the Cup, came fourth I think in the league, and lost heavily in the fog in Munich in the Cup Winners' Cup semis. But undoubtedly a great team, possibly the best Spurs set up I remember.

My memory! I've just looked at the 81-82 Cup Winner's cup and it was Barcelona who narrowly put us out. Yet I distinctly remember us losing 4-1 to Bayern Munich in a semi - final in atrocious fog. Well, there you go.

@@robertcottam8824 My very simple reply to you is this .... The Full name of the competition in this video is The 1982 FOOTBALL League Cup Final organized by the (then) FOOTBALL League. It started in England in 1888 up to 1992 the Main competition under that organization was The FOOTBALL League Championship (now the Premier League) As I have just mentioned in 1992 The top division of the FOOTBALL League was taken over by The Football .Association and re-named The F.A. I was there. Turned out to be a fantastic day. The officials had the Spurs ribbons on the Cup as there were just a couple of minutes to go and when we equalised, he had to put the Cup back down. We took them in extra time and what a victory that was. First time that Tottenham had ever been beaten at Wembley. ! Spurs were so close to the winning line that day, with about 5 mins to go, then just imploded in extra time, I think it was the 1st homegrown cup final Spurs ever lost, that apart I remember the long solemn journey home, that after the initial in your face over excitement from some of the Liverpool fans when back on the coach, which for me & my pal was obviously very hard to take, I remember it too well sadly!

4:45 - 4:53 Classic King Kennt. Surveys the defence with patience. Waits for Whelan to dart his run. Releases the ball 0.60th of a second before Whelan arrives to finish without interruption. Winning Trophies in the 1970s and 1980s were far more Tougher than now ,because English Football was in its peak and the Quality of Players playing in England were By far the most Aggressive ones.

I was there that day, behind the goal where Liverpool scored all 3 goals. But memory is a funny thing. I could have sworn that rush scored the equaliser but it was Ronnie whelan. I am glad to see that it was as good a game as I remember. I saw Liverpool at 1 fa cup nina like and 5 league cup finals. This was the best game and the most satisfying win. Why didn't that spurs ream achieve more than they did? Some great players there

Still enjoyable, 40 yrs down the road. Really didn't look like they could win it. In the end, the new boys, Rush, Whelan & Grobbelaar helped to make it happen... And the next few years were even more incredible

Spurs threw that final, they only had to hang on another 3 minutes. Liverpool were so dominant back then, they could never be written on in the entire decade. I think this final toughened Spurs up as they ended up winning 4 trophies in 4 seasons.

Have you noticed what Liverpool had here that the current team dont??? The idea that you dont pass back and sideways all the time..Liverpool in the 1980's predominately passed and moved ..FORWARD.....it started with Shankly..then Paisley..pass and move..all at pace..great football.

Keep in mind you are watching highlights. Backpasses aren't really used much in highlights. Liverpool where using the style of play adopted from the red star Belgrade team in the 70s
