In those early days “ The Mersey boy”, I thought he got loads of deserved credit as he was such an exciting footballer and did extraordinary things. He and Ian Rush absolutely revitalised the team in the 1981/82 season. I think it was in later years that he was unsung when he did the job of sweeping up around of the defence as Souness had done in a more muscular way before. The players always said that he did things in training that none of them could match. In the early days we used to see them on a Saturday as in the League cup finals of 82 and 83 and the Championship clincher against Tottenham in 82 amongst othersbut after that he did an equally brilliant but less spectacular job. He was still capable of laying on the winner as he did for Ian Rush in the 1986 FA Cup final.

Those were the days when The Football League Cup Final was played on a Saturday at 3pm (no live t.v. just recorded highlights on the Sunday afternoon). That Liverpool F.C. all red kit lasted for 18 years - November 1964 to May 1976 the O neck and August 1976 to May 1982 the V neck, from then on they varied the design of the kit.

@Ryan M : You should include the 70s too.From '75-'85 there were 11 finals in the European cup and English teams contested all but two.Of the other 9 English teams won 7 with Liverpool and Leeds both losing one each.The seven winners were Liverpool(4),Nottm Forest(2) and Aston Villa(1).The only real underperformers were the England team itself,and perhaps that is why many forget how good the players were.Although we shouldn't forget,according to Man Utd fans,football only started in 1992,it didn't exist before then.

Have been watching lots of old clips lately and truly believe that today's Liverpool players could learn a lot by watching the games from the great era of the 70's and 80's. The calm- and smartness in the attack play and finishing. However, quiestion is if not the defense play and perhaps also players have developed some since then.

Two great teams here. The Liverpool equaliser was the first goal Spurs conceded in that year's competition. The defeat was their first ever at Wembley. There was talk of the Quadruple that year, after success in the previous season's FA Cup, and Burkinshaw's over ambitious desire to "make people stop talking about the double team." The squad was too small for that, of course. I always felt that this team was capable of beating anybody, certainly in the country, and perhaps even in Europe, but the increasing volume of games, injury and sheer tiredness got to them. They retained the Cup, came fourth I think in the league, and lost heavily in the fog in Munich in the Cup Winners' Cup semis. But undoubtedly a great team, possibly the best Spurs set up I remember.
@MadMax-dr6mf6 жыл бұрын
My memory! I've just looked at the 81-82 Cup Winner's cup and it was Barcelona who narrowly put us out. Yet I distinctly remember us losing 4-1 to Bayern Munich in a semi - final in atrocious fog. Well, there you go.

Have you noticed what Liverpool had here that the current team dont??? The idea that you dont pass back and sideways all the time..Liverpool in the 1980's predominately passed and moved ..FORWARD.....it started with Shankly..then Paisley..pass and move..all at pace..great football.

Keep in mind you are watching highlights. Backpasses aren't really used much in highlights. Liverpool where using the style of play adopted from the red star Belgrade team in the 70s

In the days before 5 substitutions per team. Imagine, potentially 10 players on a field that didn’t start the game. Farce.

In his auto, Ardilles claimed that when he was approached by Spurs in '78, he hadn't actually heard of them? WHAT? They were as famous as Man Utd.
