Gambling addiction has become an emergency, a key public health issue around the world. Sports betting has always existed. But you used to have to go to a betting shop to do it. In the early 2000s, the birth of the internet and changes in EU regulation revolutionised the sector. As a result, the online market has grown from €250 million to €9.8 billion over the past 20 years. An increase of 4000%. Although sports betting is banned for minors, betting platforms have no qualms about targeting teenagers. As a result, half of all players are younger than 25. Most of them are men. While those who regularly win have restrictions placed on their account, those already in debt are targeted with free offers and loyalty rewards to keep them hooked. Raphael had already lost tens of thousands of euros on an online gambling platform when he was invited to join their VIP scheme. He told his contact he was in severe debt and needed to stop but they kept sending him more offers. Then, against all odds, he hit the jackpot and won €750,000. But when he immediately tried to withdraw the money to pay off his debts, he was blocked and encouraged to keep gambling. In the end, despite repeated attempts to withdraw the money, he ended up losing it all in 36 hours. According to various studies, gambling costs European countries two to three times more money than it bring in. Today in many countries, betting companies still face no regulation or restrictions on their marketing, free bets, VIP schemes, or sports sponsorships. Our investigation reveals the ugly truth behind this predatory industry. We hear the personal stories of those whose lives were ruined by sports gambling.

The vast majority of people betting do it not as a "quick way to get rich", Neil. As long as they don't get addicted it's just an enjoyable pastime. Just as you might go down the pub and have a beer. You don't drink because it's a quick way to get rich. Have you seen the enjoyment a punter in the grandstand gets from just winning a few quid? The punter won't go broke unless taken to an extreme. Just as you won't go broke having a drink unless taken to an extreme... Those sadly addicted do not bet to get rich either. Sadly they simply bet because they are addicted... And even as someone who gave up what people call "work" to bet on the horses... I don't do it to get rich at all. It's just my chosen lifestyle. Putting the hours in studying form when I want. It's similar to being self-employed.

The money does not disappear...it goes to the winners, who are most often the entities hosting the gaming. The gaming entities hire employees, invest and loan the money (bonds) , pay taxes, and contribute to the overall economy though employment and expenditure. While the personal stories of loss are sad, they are far from catastrophic to society as a whole.

What more do player's need to hear than the management of a web based betting site say 99% of our player's lose. Does the hope of being in the 1% of winners keep them playing ? I only bet college & professional football and only with money I can afford to lose. I enjoy it and it's legal so don't take the sob stories of degenerate gamblers as need for reform. Last year I made $5,420 and yes I paid income tax on it. I don't deal with anyone and simply fund my account, make my bets, and at the end of the year declare my winnings or loses. Currently up around $7K but who knows what the last 12 weeks of the year brings.

Stop VIP and stop free bets and any other offer that is not for ALL bettors... And allow winning punters to remain betting! At least have a certain amount we can be in profit each year before we are banned. When I was gambling with bookmakers I was first informed that no offer of free bets or increased odds will apply to me... And even if I were to get the offer it would have been done by mistake. So if I was to win a bet which had an offer or increased odds attached then I will only get paid the normal amount (the offer / increased odds will be cancelled on the winner even though they accepted the bet at the time). Then I was banned completely. However, the "Gambling Commission" is an ass. If you wanted to buy something, would you accept people you don't even know seeing the amount of money in your bank before you're allowed to buy?

I have been banned by some British bookmakers Dan; and severely limited by others to such an extent my accounts just as well be banned. However, it is not exactly how you say. Bookmakers will keep many short term winning accounts on their books. When I met a representative from a bookmaker that had closed my account... I asked him why they'd closed it when imo I hadn't won much. He told me it seldom matters how much or how many bets a punter has won. It is instead the odds taken that matters. He said they were no different to any other bookmaker. Accounts are closed if the average winner's odds are over 20% better than the starting price. Because the only way a gambler makes an overall profit is by getting value. They know every punter could go through a long winning run, but that is often a coincidence. If the odds taken weren't great compared to starting price then the probability is the bookmaker will get all his money back and some. Whereas often if a punter beats SP by an average of over 20% it does not really matter how many winners or how much he has won, it just means he's likely to continue in profit... So is banned. But there is still a way of making a consistent profit. By betting on the Exchanges, where it does not matter to the Exchange owner who wins and punters laying horses make more ricks than bookmakers.
