Hi Alex, I was wondering if it's mandatory for your iPad's screen to stay on while recording a pencast. Just like recording a voice note, will the session keep running in the background even when the screen is asleep? If not, I would think the battery can drain easier that way, no? Thanks in advance!

Alex, do you know is there is a way to archive ALL the used pages in the archive tablet icon on the right hand side? I know it shows initially black and will turn gray once one has selected to ARCHIVE. But I would like to have all those used pages, inside the folder. Not just a few in and a few left at view. What I am looking for is that II want a clear screen on my I pad when I start using the pen in a new lecture or job.

What does it do when transforming boxes into text? More than that, what about any equations or abbreviations? Been scouring the internets for this answer...haven't found anything.

Hi Alex, I get my lecture notes in a PDF form before the class, is there a way that you can integrate these PDF notes with what you write during a lecture? Regards Fiona

I am a echo user but it has broken. I have a few questions about the differences. 1) The recording- the 3 can only be done win pared to a devices right? 2) When you put/share it with onenote evernote etc. will the recording still be there? 3) Does the app work with a Microsoft surface? 4) does the recording have to stay of the devices or is there another way to store the recorded part for extended times like how its does with the echo software on the computer. If I do get this it would be on a iphone 6 with 16 GB storage and I don't want to use all the storge for this,

Pen sounds a bit loud on the paper, I worry when it's too light that it's maybe flimsy. the prior models are pretty solid but the ink wasn't great. I know the 3 has the improved ink, almost similar to the "space pen" no?

Correct! Much better cartridges... This means you can't use old cartridges from older Livescribe pens though... of which, I had a lot spare. It may just be the location of my microphone though because the volume of the pen of paper is similar to a biro. Not as scratchy though

Hi Alex, If I wrote a note while the pen is not paired, will this note appear on the app later after pairing, those notes are cleaned after writing or I should buy another note book?

Can I fill a notebook with handwriting and then with the touch of one button, convert all of that handwriting to text with one single button touch? And when it turns into text, what is the file format? Can I email it to myself and then port the text into Microsoft Word?

Hi Alex - I am thinking of purchasing the smartpen - can you tell me if the pen will still record if it is not linked to the ipad/phone. The older verison I understand had a 2-8GB storage and you can write and record and then upload later. I want to be discreet In meetings and do not want to turn up with an ipad.

Jo Anderson The livescribe 3 doesn't have a microphone as the previous models did, this one relys on iphone/ipad's microphone so it wont record audio without being bluetoothed to another device with microphone (currently ONLY IOS devices).I understand that it will record whatever you write on their proprietary paper just fine until it connects with an IOS device again ...just not the audio.

Hi alex, I am planning to buy the pen, however i am not sure if it has a headphone jack on the top like the other models so i can listen to the taken notes on the go without my ipad. And does the pen still record without the app? Thanks in advance Alex

Hey RJ! The pen itself no longer has a headphone jack on but you can of course plug headphones into your tablet or phone which is being used to record notes with! That's preferred infact because the quality is much better! Also, the pen can take physical written notes without the app, but if you need to record audio too, you need to launch the application on your iOS device!

Hey Deacon. The numbers of the books are just for organisation. When you buy a pack of 4 of the books, they just come numbered and coloured in that way but it has no relevance to anything else - it's just to help you identify them. I use my black ones for uni work, red for ideas/plans, and orange/turquoise are still empty for now!

Yes it does have relevance. If you write on a #1 notebook, then on another, writing on the second #1 will erase what you wrote on the first. This is very important to keep in mind.

You can use the pen without being connected to the app - but I don't know how much will be stored in the pen before upload to the app - I never tested it! The max I've ever done was around 2 A4 pages of notes but it could be loads more

The idea is good but lecture halls are pretty big somtimes and sitting at the front isn't always an option. so having my recording device sitting on my table wont pick up a teacher across the room. Also, i don't like apple products so until it has an android verison i wont be getting one. But i love the whole concept. it just needs some polish, like removable recoding devices that can be put at the front of the class and also, not having to rely on a custom note book but use any paper.

Nope! A decent size. Definitely less bulky than the old Livescribe pens but more bulky than a biro

No, especially for older and arthritic people the size is perfect. I was one of the early users of the 'Smartpen' (PULSE), and I have been pleased with the size ever since. Two of my granddaughters have used the pens at College and Uni and the only negative (from their point of view) was that it picked up the chatter behind them in the classroom, that is how sensitive it is. The other advantage is that you can 'replay' at a speed comfortable to you to get the best out of a critical statement.

Wait... why can't you just take pictures of your notes and keep them on a separate file per notebook/subject? You can record lectures anyway with your devices so I don't see why this product is relevant.

I have used 2 smart pens both after they had ran out of warranty the displays became so dull you couldn't read them. I contacted them they said sorry we don't have any service centres once your warranty run out TOUGH LUCK Great after sales servcie
