@@jwilcox4726 Doris Day's house is not in the flood plain. These homes were built in the estuary where the Carmel River meets the ocean. Her house is 6 miles west, overlooking the Quail Lodge/Golf Course, right off Carmel Valley Road. This flooding happens often with the first heavy rains. Another piece of info, Clint Eastwood's Mission Ranch is also in this neighborhood, but on higher ground.

Sewer-hole covers can be pushed up & off by strong water. Then you have an open hole that can suck a person in. Yes, be careful. Always good to know where your neighborhood sewers & drains are.

Yes, every year they hold off until the last minute. It's all about the 1/2 dozen salmon that call the lagoon and river home you know. I feel for the affected homeowners.
I hope large news outlets start using folks like yours footage for news. Would give me a reason to watch again. Great footage. Heart breaks for the home owners!

People, the homes are mostly nice but the land is the act value, not the structure. Nevertheless, the pollutants from homes to the ocean is also a problem. Take care all.

1977 - A similar storm with the atmospheric river dumped 10 -12 inches up in the Ventana Wilderness - part of the watershed- flooded that same area and it also took out the bridge over Highway 1. Lots of fun for Big Sur/Carmel Highlands residents. Don't Build on FLOODPLAINS!

I remember back in the 90's where this Hatton Fields neighborhood flooded every year when there were heavy rains. Surprised that they haven't come up with a solution by now to keep things from flooding.

In BC on the coast I was ALWASY cleaning out storm drains as it rains so much. Storm drains block up easily if you get complacent. Then the water hits and it's too late. Those 2/3 million dollar homes with groomed grounds hopefully ALSO spent lots of money on extended insurance coverage.

@@ALD667 it is Carmel and only the super wealthy or those who have inherited family homes live there. The only affordable beach front property in California is far North near the Oregon border. Monterey is not as affluent but it is not cheap either.

I lived in the Monterey area for some years. The coast is beautiful but also vulnerable. That was why I moved inland with no regret. Peace of mind. And, my dog got healthier. She was traumatized by coyotes’ callings every night. My prayers go to those who are impacted. Be strong and safe!

Those houses have always been in a floodplain, used to be artichoke fields till property taxes got too high.

@@jfranklin9549 Nice, easy builds on flat terrain. Developer makes their money and moves on. We ran X country in the San Gabriels up by Shantree Flats. We knew (in grade nine) that due to the Santa Ana winds you DO NOT build homes there. The developers and lawyers bullied, extorted, sued, and pushed around the local politicians or got their guys in office, and then BUILT HOMES THERE. Now the fires.

No, this is not rising tides, or climate change, or a dismissive 'nothing new'. This is because the outlet from the river to the sea, was not opened up soon enough, so fish, upstream, would have more water. Seriously. This was human disregard or error. The battle has been going on for years, whether to protect the residents or the upstream wildlife. The residents often lose. Obviously the decision makes do not live in the lower sitting end of town.

The river breaches the sand bar just fine on it's own. The rain came down too fast. Had nothing to do with the river not breaching the sand bar. I was born there and seen worse flooding, in the 90s.

Last frame, the mini dam they built to keep water from the neighborhood actually kept water from draining out. Homeowners have a claim. Aside from that this never happened before the environmentalists pushed for the dam upstream to be taken down. Is there a connection? Homeowners affected here have every reason to ask that question.

Ya, they have govt employees and people for that, also insurance. What am I missing? Someone go surf that river mouth, once in a lifetime swell. 8D This scene seems a bit different from say, other places flooded and people scattered about trying to get help. Anything sells in Carmel! I've grown up and become old around Carmel. People will pay millions for a one bed/bath 900 sq.ft. 70-80yr. old house in total disrepair. They'll tear it down and build a mcmansion that looks horrible!
