You can actually walk in to Christies (Phillips/ Sotheby's/ Phillip Mould, etc...) and stroll around, every single day. Assist auctions on the days assigned for it (like the majority you see seating there), and see the collections up close before they are sold!

I really wish that Christie's would include the size and medium of the work in the written description at the bottom of the screen. This would give us internet viewers more insight into the type of work and its value.

This was so sad to witness. First, I do not think this sale was actually "pursuant to Paul's wishes". He was a great philanthropist, but there is more to philanthropy than giving away money. Paul had told people that he wanted these works to be seen by the public and end up in a museum, not on the auction block where they will then disappear from public view. He would have smiled down from the heavens to see an "Allen Museum of Fine Art" constructed in Seattle for the benefit of the people of and visitors to the Pacific Northwest. Jody....why?
@julycemonbleauxUCLA
@julycemonbleauxUCLA Жыл бұрын
They are correct. Mr Allen, Paul, wanted his collection to be seen by the public. He always thought about his community, Seattle. It’s surprising that his sister decided to auction. The collection would have been donated in his will and he would have designated what institutions etc. obviously not the case. It’s an amazing collection. Imagine collecting it. Indeed a Visionary

Paul Allen paid for the paintings, but he never owned them. He was only the “chosen one” to be the caretaker. Just like the next chosen one.

I hope I understand your point - he made them all available to be on public view. A lot of these were bought by Middle Eastern and Far Eastern buyers who will likely choose to keep them private or not loan them out beyond their homeland. He was a true custodian. He should be fondly remembered.

You make a great point but I think ultimately he saw himself as a custodian and would rather see the profits go to many philanthropic causes to benefit many. It's about more than the art. I hope they don't get locked away. Great point though 👍

That's how much they are really worth? Huh? They're worth what people are willing to pay for them. Noone is unknown in the 21$T century. It is who you know. How you present what you have. Is it love?

@@damienkearns3654 he he, most of them are work of forgery! Museums know that, art dealers know that and often the customers know that. It's a strange world where being known for possessing a certain painting, although it's a fake, is worth to some many millions! Just so the other collector aspires to own it even more.
