Neil Gaiman in conversation with Joe Hill
To celebrate the release of THE MONARCH OF THE GLEN and BLACK DOG:
Two Tales of American Gods (Vinyl Edition + MP3)
Welcome to the world of AMERICAN GODS as you’ve never heard it before…
THE MONARCH OF THE GLEN and BLACK DOG: Two Tales of American Godsby Neil Gaiman, performed by a full cast
Live Talks Los Angeles is proud to host Neil Gaiman for a conversation to celebrate the release of two novellas set in the world of American Gods-now available exclusively as a vinyl boxset.
First published in 2001, Neil Gaiman’s AMERICAN GODS is the New York Times bestselling novel that told the story of Shadow, an ex-con whose life took an unexpected turn when he became bodyguard, driver, and errand boy for the enigmatic trickster and rogue, “Mr. Wednesday.”
But Shadow’s story did not end with the last scene of AMERICAN GODS. In THE MONARCH OF THE GLEN, we follow Shadow to an isolated castle in Scotland, where he becomes embroiled in an ongoing battle between men and monsters. And in BLACK DOG, Shadow travels to a small village in England where he is befriended by a local couple with a dark past…and its ghosts.
This vinyl release is sure to be a collector’s item for fans with a limited print run of 2,500 numbered boxsets. The slide-in slipcase and all five LP jackets feature stunning original artwork by Miranda Meeks and the recordings are performed by an all-star cast helmed by Sir Derek Jacobi and featuring the return of Daniel Oreskes as Shadow and Maggi-MegReed as Bast. They are also accompanied by the talented voices of Michael Emerson, Marc Thompson, Peter Forbes, Katherine Kingsley, David Rintoul, Siobhan Redmon, Daniel Weyman, and Adjoa Andoh.
These brand-new recordings also come with the MP3 download of the full cast recording of American Gods: The Tenth Anniversary Edition.
At last, all of Shadow’s adventures in one place!
Neil Gaiman is a #1 New York Times bestselling author of books for children and adults whose award-winning titles include Norse Mythology, American Gods, The Graveyard Book, Good Omens (with Terry Pratchett), Coraline, and The Sandman graphic novels. Neil Gaiman is a Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR and Professor in the Arts at Bard College.

I know I'm a year (!) late, but I have to say that I am embarrassingly in love with Joe Hill! Even though I have been a huge fan of Stephen King since I was 10, I had no idea that Joe Hill was his son when I discovered Heart-Shaped Box. Joe won my heart with his dedication..."She's seen a million pages, and she's rocked them all." And NOS4A2 is one of the most brilliant books I've ever read. Anyway, sorry for the long comment, but seeing these two unbelievably talented authors speaking together is absolutely wonderful. I should also mention that Coraline was the first book I read aloud to my daughter. Her name is Kyra. If you know, you know.

Great interview. Joe did a wonderful job - he asked great questions, gave interesting comments, and respectfully gave the guest the time to fully tell his story without interrupting. This was very enjoyable. Thank you.

When Neil won the World Fantasy Award for an issue of Sandman, he wasn't famous yet and there were people in that organization who were so upset that a comic book won the World Fantasy Award that the committee got together and within a week changed the rules so that a comic book couldn't ever win the World Fantasy Award except in a special media category. Today Neil is more famous and successful than almost anyone in that organization, but he doesn't need them and I'm sure that snub is something he'll long remember.

Joe Hill's theory about hotel room doors playing with writer's minds unable to resist creating stories about what's behind them is enthralling, because I'd do that all the time when I'd go to Mohegan Sun and just stand on the upper rail above the store area watching people go by. The casino floor was a terrifyingly good source of material watching people gamble and making up stories about where they'd come from and how life would play out for them with every card draw and roll of the dice.

I love how they were introduced. It was very professional, in that there was no mention that Joe was related to King. It's how it should be but then again, this is how it always was, it's still nice though. Anyways, Neil can talk for days about stuff, as in all his other videos and interviews, and I will always listen.

They are the new kind of writers who have emerged from comics and television shows. Popular literature have always been like that, but more so in their case. When pop culture was born in the 60s, we never would had imagine this two writers. All in and in charge.

Love these two! Definitely favorite writers! But I disagree on one thing regarding about making comics/graphic novels.. The writer is the writer of the comic book. The artist is the Director, Set designer, Actor and etc. You would never say that a screenwriter is actually the director of a Movie(unless they wrote and directed the film).

@Elwaves2925
@Elwaves2925 Жыл бұрын
Locke And Key is great but I thoroughly disagree with your comparison to Sandman. Sandman changed so much (in the industry) and affected so many people and things. Locke And Key isn't anywhere near that level.
@joncarroll2040
@joncarroll2040 Жыл бұрын
@@Elwaves2925 Sandman is one of the most influential comics in history but influence doesn't always translate to quality. Great as it is, Sandman is very inconsistent across its run. There are some arcs that are much better than others. Locke and Key is far more uniform from beginning to end. It also benefits from having a single creative team across its entire run. Finally it makes much better use of its form. Joe does things with comics that only work in comics. That's why so much more had to change in Locke and Key for TV while Sandman remains largely intact.
@Elwaves2925
@Elwaves2925 Жыл бұрын
@@joncarroll2040 I agree that influence doesn't equal quality but it also doesn't take away from the quality, which Sandman absolutely has. If it didn't have that quality, it wouldn't have been so influential. Locke And Key may flow a little better overall but it's also at a much smaller scale in all regards, so it should. Sandman is on an epic scale in every regard, even though they both feature a family at their core. To me, your last point actually detracts from Locke And Key, not adds to it. It makes Locke And Key seem limited, whereas Sandman works intact in any form. But I guess this is why we have this thing called a 'different opinions'. 🙂
@PureVikingPowers
@PureVikingPowers Жыл бұрын
No it's not even close! The Sandman is the greatest work of all time, Locke and Key is in the top 20 ill admit but his father Stephen King has written works that's better than anything Joe has, King is in the top 5 and King has still not created anything better than The Sandman
